| Coming from a Java background, I'd like to learn a bit of C++ now. However, I'm stuck on...well, Windows. That also means my choice of compilers is kind of limited.
There is VC2005 available, but that's Microsoft, and I couldn't even get a basic console application to work on that. And don't mention MFC...I shouldn't need it. There is Dev-C++ available, but that uses up WAY too much memory before you even open a project. VC2005 used less RAM even with a project open. There is GCC available, but that's for Linux. Any ideas as to what I should get, and why? |

| You can get mingw, which is what the Windows Version of gcc is based on.
or, if you want to use a UNIX environment on windows, use Cygwin, then you can use gcc. |

| Cant fail with DJGPP.
Just go to the Zip Picker and select what all you want/need. Its GCC/G++ for windows |

| DJGPP? That's...DOS! I'm on XP here, where there is no true DOS. | |||

| You can still use it, the command prompt works just fine. | |||

| MinGW is the only GCC suite for Windows. Likewise, MSys is the only UNIX-like environment for Windows. Get with the program. | |||

| Personally I use MSVC 6.
Its a pretty good compiler and a great IDE. |

| From what I've heard, MSVC 6 is one of the worst compilers out there.
If I was on Windows, I'd probably use Borland, but I'm not on Windows, so therefore, I don't have to. gcc for the win. |

Generally when I get code that was written for MSVC6, not even MSVC6 is able to compile it. For that matter, it struggles with code that works fine in other compilers. |

| Hmm...okay, I found something interesting.
Think someone can look into Code::Blocks? |

| What context of Code::Blocks are you coming from because I'm pretty sure everyone else in this thread besides you doesn't know what file has Code::Blocks in it... | |||

| I've got Microsoft dev C++ pro. It's pretty good, just a bit expensive. | |||

Well that IS what you're supposed to do. I hope you don't mean to imply you pirated it? ![]() |

| Hell no! My dad bought it. He's always programming some windows program or other (though now he seems to be quite the linux guru.) |
