I am having a problem getting certain games (specifically, the US/Europe and Japanese versions of Dynamite Headdy) working correctly in Gens. When I load the game, Gens immediately jumps to a red screen.
I read online that this problem was related to a bad ROM checksum and that enabling Gens' "Ignore checksums" feature would alleviate the problem. Unfortunately, neither setting Gens to ignore checksums nor using a tool to fix the checksum removes the red screen. Does anyone know how to fix this problem? Thanks in advance, Kamek77 (edited by Kamek77 on 03-28-06 09:48 PM) |

Hmm, seems to work for me. Have you checked your ROM? What Gens version do you have?

I've run my ROMs through GoodGen, and it classifies them as "Dynamite Headdy (J) [c][!]" and "Dynamite Headdy (UE) [c][!]". The [c] represents bad checksum routine, which should not be a problem with Gens' checksum ignore...correct?
Also, my Gens version is 2.12b. (Interestingly, the Dynamite Headdy beta works fine, but these two versions don't...) --Kamek77 |

Hmm, odd indeed. All those versions seem to work fine for me. Maybe it's something in the Linux port, but I doubt it (actually, emulators tend to lag behind non-DOS/Windows OSes).

Actually, wouldn't the checksum stuff be tested within the ROM itself? I know I remember needing a bypass when working with Sonic 1, if the checksum routine wasn't disabled in it...

Normally, yes, it's up to the ROM to verify the checksum. Gens merely has an option to automatically fix the checksum, meaning that even if you've modified the ROM and broken the checksum, Gens will fix it and hopefully enable the ROM to run.

Is there any way to get these two games working, though? I'm especially keen to get the Japanese ROM working, since I own the US cartridge and would like to see the differences between the two games firsthand.
Is there possibly a different emulator that is known to work? Possibly a patch or fix for the emulator or ROM that could provide a solution? --Kamek77 |

By the way, Fusion > Gens, so I'd try that if I were you.

So....Odd....
I played Dynamite Heady NUMEROUS times as a child, and I loved it, so you can imagine that I have emulated it a bajillion times since my early years. I always, always, ALWAYS remember playing it on Gens or Gens+. I went back and even found my roms folder WITH Gens+ and DynamiteH, ran it...And boom. Checksum error. Fix was on and all.. So I searched the net for a clean rom. Nothing. Well, I then tried something a little different... Downloaded Kega. Then it worked. It skipped right over the checksum, even though it said the checksum was wrong. I guess use Kega =\ Best bet with this game...But I know I have played it on Gens before...I KNOW IT. Must of been an older version |

I find Gens easier to pick up and use at any time, then Kega...

Well, Kega Fusion works for me, but I can't understand for the life of me what's wrong with Gens that won't allow it to play those games...
Thanks guys! --Kamek77 |

It seems that Gens checksum fix is more ineffcient then Kegas. I believe that Gens most likely just fixes the checksum to get by it, and Kega literally skips the whole checksum completely. It's my guess though... |
