Acmlm's Board - I3 Archive - General Gaming - What's your favorite way of getting "The legendary weapons"? | New poll

What method is your favorite way, in an RPG, to obtain the most powerful weapons or armor in a game?To clarify, what I mean is that there are several ways, in various games, to obtain the strongest equipment. As in doing side quests, a rare drop, or simply buying them.
And yes, this counts for armor too. | As a rare drop |
4.2%, 1 vote | Purchasing it from a store/shop |
4.2%, 1 vote | Doing a side-quest |
20.8%, 5 votes | Finding it in a chest in the last dungeon |
4.2%, 1 vote | Facing an incredibly strong boss |
20.8%, 5 votes | Getting it in the normal run of events |
4.2%, 1 vote | Only getting one weapon, and instead getting attack power upgrades |
|
0.0%, 0 vote | Clearing a secret or extra dungeon |

In several RPGs, there is always the "best armor" or a "legendary weapon", that can only be obtained by special means that require extra effort. This isn't always the case, as sometimes, the best equipment can simply be bought.
My favorite method is just that actually; buying it. I'm quite lazy, but I'm also a perfectionist and hate missing out on something, rendering it impossible to get it later on. |

The problem with getting it from a really hard secret boss and/or dungeon is that it kind of defeats the point. Once your powerful enough to beat the boss/dungeon that's really hard, you really have no use for the power afforded you by having this incredibly powerful weapon.

I picked "Clearing a hidden dungeon", even though those normally have a uber-boss at the bottom anyway.

Anything that extends the content of the game: Extra dungeons, gradual upgrading, and freaking-hard bosses, in that order. Sticking it in as a rare drop makes it a monotonous task to get and makes getting it more of a relief than an accomplishment *coughswordofkings*

Originally posted by Skydude Only shitty games make the weapon harder to get than beating the final boss with that weapon. I don't think I have a favorite way of getting an ultimate weapon, I do like good side quests that deal with the character that gets the weapon. Maybe it is a long dungeon and a hard boss, maybe it is just a series of cut-scenes, maybe it is a series of cut-scenes that establish a shop where you can buy the ultimate weapon from. I don't think you should auto-matically get the ultimate weapon just by going through the game though. You should be able to get really good weapons, but I think they should be eventually be upgradable to the ultimate weapon or something instead. |

Either in the final dungeon (like say ... FFIV), or during a huge long side quest. That way, you feel like all your work was worth it.

Gameshark.
(ok, ok.... hidden debug mode that gives super-items not obtainable in the normal game?) |

Originally posted by DarkSlaya Hmm, I voted for that too but I should´ve thought about it some more. Maybe there should be a choice that says: Facing an incredibly strong boss after clearing a secret dungeon. Anyway, hard bosses will do too. |

I chose finding it in the final dungeon, but I think what's best is if it's a character-driven sidequest. That is, some special sequence of events specific to the character that makes sense as to why they get a great weapon out of it.

finding the secret dungeons and acquiring it. Usually, they aren't on sale now are they? Although, I like to customize the "legendary weapon" though, but that requires luck in getting the right material to do it I guess?

Extra-secret, extra-hard extra dungeon, especially if there's an extra-hard boss at the bottom.

Tales of Phantasia spoilers
Spoiler:
What was weird was, in the Lower tier of the Moria Gallery, the boss was far, far easier than the dungeon, which was difficult to navigate and had the strongest monsters in the game. You were more likely to die from a random encounter then the boss... you got the most powerful balanced weapon in the game at the bottom, but there was a dropped item with a stronger stab, but far weaker slash. Like anyone would pick a rare drop as their favorite method anyway |

I guess it gets kinda frustrating slaughtering the same enemies for several hours just waiting for a special item. *coughPSOcough*

Originally posted by Peardian lolstarmansuper I like the whole "Long series of sidequests" idea a lot more than anything else. Not just one sidequest, like, you have to do a bunch of them in succession as they progress (moogle mail and the protect ring, anyone?). But unlike, say, the coffee mixes in FFIX, you should be able to pick them up at any time. Kinda like the final sidequests that you have to deal with in Chrono Trigger, before downing the Black Omen. |

I see what you mean Grey. Also like the trading sequences in Zelda games...
...which of course means I did forget something. Somewhat. |
