Yeah, I've found that old people do not like the idea of "upgrading" in any way shape or form. I think that is due in part that most old people are cheap crummy bastards.

Tech support in particular tends to be rather awful, and probably more so as time goes on. Since documentation tends to be made more and more in an understandable manner, and things get a bit more intuitive, the people who call will naturally tend to increasingly be those who should have their breathing privileges revoked.

You won't have to worry about it much longer, before long there will be some guy in Mumbai doing your job for a third the pay.

Nah... alot of companies are keeping their tech support native, or bringing it back to be native. They are losing alot of their customer base from having people from other places answer. Alot of people don't like talking to someone they can't understand. And, trust me, alot of the people shouldn't even be allowed to be alive... They are the Git-R-Done people that need to be turned into soilant green.

Call centers are fine, although a bit stressful. I work in a Help Desk call centre myself, for the Education department in my state of Australia.
I actually have a lot of time and patience concerning clients, although it gets a bit taxed when the system is overloaded and I take more calls than I'm comfortably able to do. If I'm overworked, my patience will wear thin -- and I'm not fond of that because then I don't think I'm offering quality customer service anymore. I do get a bit annoyed though with some users. Not all of them, but a particular "subset" of users -- the ones who don't care that they know jack shit about computers, are proud of that they don't care, and that refuse to learn anything. To be perfectly honest, these users wind up being a drain on our resources, as they ask the same questions over and over again and tie up the phone line so that users who ARE making an effort have to wait longer or cannot get through. Personally, I think it's a little bit unfair of them, and I think that in this day and age -- if you are required to use a computer as part of your job -- you MUST take the time and effort to learn. In general, I have "all the time in the world" for a client who is willing to learn. Oh, and some clients are funny, but then you have to be able to laugh in this job (and yes, sometimes that means at clients, take that for what you will) or you'll go around the twist. |

Hehe, help lines are funny. Well, not funny but I'd just find it hard and I was sitting here thinking of doing customer service over the phone for Cingular or something . I had this friend telling me he was doing telemarketing and that they'd cuss him out and he'd just hang up. Working in a call center would be..interesting.

Dude, I don't know how long you've had this job but I had a job like that once. I quit it within a week. It just seemed to so pointless and was borderline harassment of the public. I just stopped showing up to work. It was a public information survey center also located as part of a college campus.
So if you can stand it longer than I did, more power to you. But there are less stressful jobs out there for comparable pay if you look around. |

See, I don't mind doing what I do, but I could never do any kind of telemarketing, or phone surveys.
I HATE it when those people call me, and so I'd always feel bad about doing it to others. Besides, I don't think I'd enjoy being told to go fuck myself with every second phone call that I make I did doorknocking for charity once and got that lovely reaction in person a few times... people slamming doors, yelling abuse and profanities at you, threatening you to get off their property. Conversely though there were some days where I didn't get that... I'd just get lonely old people who wanted to talk to me forever and ever and ever and ever..... and ever.... Nope, I'll stick to tech support. I still get abused, but I don't feel like I'm being intrusive, harassing or anything like that. I just try to help where I can.... which is most the time... (unless they ask a REAL tricky question) |

Originally posted by Tarale That's what I do, and I don't mind. But of course, it's not cool when people tell you to put various stuff up your own ass. But they usually hang up within an instant anyway, after uttering their phrase. Same old, same old. People that are lonely aren't cool either, but I've never had many of those. And then there's the ones that try to convert me to christianity, reading sections from the bible at me.. and telling me about their own experiences with Jesus... And once there was this woman who, obviously, was an alcoholic. That was just sad, but still somewhat hilarious.. How do we manage? SENSE OF HUMOUR. The people that work there are indeed a crazy bunch. Probably the only reason why I'm still there. But I'm gonna quit this summer, and do something significantly more productive.. |
