That's the story that was on 60 minutes?
Interesting stuff, but I think their conclusions were largely shakey. For example, that little kid who they kept assuming would grow up gay seemed more likely to grow up with gender dysphoria to me. Personally, my instincts from studying emergent behavior make me think the people looking for a single cause are going to turn up empty handed. I think gayness comes from a huge number of factors, including genetics, conditions in the womb, the inherent randomness of cell placement (and its effects on the glands and brain), gender ratios observerved as an infant, and God only knows what else. Then there's the question of whether we should bother looking for a cause in the first place. It seems the assumption is that finding a cause will make people stop being such idiots because they realize that gays are gay because they just are, rather than by choice, but think of the history of race relations. Nobody claims that somebody of a different color is a different color because they choose to be, but plenty of people have irrational hatred of whoever doesn't share their skin color anyway. Finding a reason will just force people will find newer and even stupider reasons to hate, and it seems just as likely that a cause would make people would view homosexuality as a defect that should be cured, which is hardly right either. |

That's very interesting and all, I agree with what 'Squash Monster' said about how gayness .. or whatever you want to call it, comes from a different amount of factors.
And just because the other twin plays neopets over a bloody game could mean something completely different, could mean he is against violence .. does that mean all people against violence are gay. That poor kid though, he could very well be straight when he gets older and his parents and others will mostly likely think he is gay growing up over this research. |

Ya know what's the kicker about Christians who persecute gays?
According to their beliefs, gays go against God'a law. So do people who seek lustful thoughts. So do people who steal. So do peopel who cheat on their spouses. So do MURDERERS. And yet, somehow, the infinitely powerful grace of Jesus' blood can forgive MURDERERS and not gays. Explain THAT one. I'm a Christian, and I utterly detest the hate people have toward gays. I don't buy this, "They choose to do it because they're sinners," because I mean, hell, I don't choose to be attraced to women. If I could, I'd turn OFF my hormones every now and again. And from people say, it means that a man who looks up pornography and cheats on his wife (thus sinning) can be forgiven and go to heaven, while a man who has sex with another man somehow CAN'T, despite the fact that it's all lust and sexual orientation involved. Um, HELLO? How does that make sense? Of course, I still kind of don't understand how lust is always a sin. I mean, yea, it CAN be, when it leads to rape, but lust is also natural, am I wrong? (Then again, they say that humans are sinful by nature) Besides, don;t you NEED lust to have a child? Friggin' screwed up stuff, lemme tell you. (edited by D3stiny_Sm4sher on 03-17-06 10:18 PM) |

Well, I certainly can't give you any justification for fundamentalists or really any non-Catholic christian religion, since I haven't really studied what they believe.
As for the Catholic Church's official position, it's actually remarkably simple. Extramarital sex is a sin, whether it's with someone of the opposite sex or the same sex. Marriage, in the religious sense, is the union of a man and a woman in the eyes of God. That's not to say that The Church necessarily opposes legal homosexual marriage; that's something else entirely. The only difference between homosexual sex and heterosexual sex, as far as Catholic teaching goes, is that the latter can be "good" provided it is within marriage...but outside of marriage, they're the same level of sin. Edit: Another important thing that comes about because of that is that non-sexual homosexual activity, while perhaps distasteful, is not inherently wrong. (edited by Skydude on 03-17-06 10:54 PM) |
