Well, your sprites are nice. Since you haven't done the FG yet, it does clash. Perhaps you could try your hands on the FG sometime?
The sprites are good, though. Don't get me wrong. Just that... they clash with the old SMW stuff. But your work did inspire me to make a new sprite for Mario. Well, it was your Rex that did it... |

Increadibly nice. Just like everyone else said, go ahead and change the forground as well for one of the best use of shading for SMW there has been.
I'm interested in how the Koopa Troopas after Special World is finished as well as Mario flying with the cape look. |

Originally posted by Raccoon Sam Wow, you said the same thing as everyone else, but you said it an immature way. Congratulations! Speaking of the foreground though, you may be able to just do a palette tweak and make it look right without changing every bit of foreground. |

After 16 years of the same ol' Super Mario World Sprites, it's good to the eyes to see something new, now Super Mario World Hacking can continue for the next 4 years.
They may clash with existing sprites and back or/and foregrounds, but that's to happen when you mix different styles together, just wait till all sprites are replaced. I'm sure that those ASM-Gods and Hex-devils will come up with a way, if it's not allready known, to have those sprites with more frames for animation or colours and different palettes. Congrats, icegroom, you did something, we all dreamed of. And go with the Sumo Version of Sumo-Bros (A Giant Hammer Bro from SMB3 could look good too), but I think you should do both, different areas, different bros. |

Yes, icegroom should show us more of these graphics we could only dream of until now.
Except that's not his name, I doubt many people dream of SMW graphics, and this sure as hell isn't the biggest graphical landmark in 16 years. I personally tend to dream that I'm Robocop or I'm being chased by Tom Jones and his Pokemon henchmen. But I digress. This is actually quite a good start. Especially the Dry Bones and both Sumos and Bowser; while the last two need palette tweaks they're already quite awesome. Like Alastor said, I don't think this can ever be used well at all without matching BG and FG, though. Though he said it in a considerably stupider way. I agree with JJ that your shading needs serious work. The Koopas especially need it. You have other colors; use them. You said you like the wick on one Bob-omb and other parts of the other. Wouldn't it make sense to just change the wick on the one you like? Pokey needs a spike so you know you can't jump on him. From the screenshots, I'd say the extra arms on Lakitu are noticeable. Quite. No arms in non-throwing frames would be better than four arms, if it comes down to that. Yes, Monty Mole *does* look that bad. To be fair, it's mostly the fault of the game's two frames and what you've got is really quite good. But that's not enough. He should have a one arm forward and other arm back pose, and a one arm back and other arm forward pose, and that's it. That's all you have room for. I prefer the Paper Mario look to the New SMB look. They were cute in Paper Mario. Now they're not. I guess they give a more SMBish effect, but if I had to choose I'd definately go with Paper Mario. Do you have enough room and palette to do the darkened eye dot thing? Yoshi is pretty cool, but his legs need to be shortened a bit or something. They don't look right, especially in the first pose. In closing, they're good. Quite good. I can safely say I cannot make graphics that good and will not be able to without months of practice. But without a whole package of foreground and backgrounds nobody can use them without making a bunch of backgrounds themselves (and let's face it, most of us can't sprite like you) so these graphics are pretty much unusable in their current form. Remedy that and fix the palette errors and various graphical tweaks and you'll have a pretty sweet deal. |

Whew, haven't had internet access for a few days now, but I've kept up work.
Originally posted by NES Boy Originally posted by Ice Ranger Heh. I'd almost forgotten about the sprites that change after you beat Special World. I've left my save file incomplete on purpose so that I can easily go to any area and see how the sprites are looking, and I'm still working on Koopas. Originally posted by PrincessPeach Utilizing the Sledge Bros. was my original thought, but the Sumo Bros. are short enough from their crouching posture that I just couldn't fit everything in and make it look right. I've pretty much decided to to use the Sumofied version at this point. (That's what I have inserted in the game, and I like the way it animates) Originally posted by Glyph Phoenix I'm only really given seven colors to work with on the Koopas: white, black, orangish skin tone, reddish skin outline, and then three shades of red, green, blue or yellow. Most other sprites also use one of the Koopa palettes, so I've had to be creative with color useage on virtually everything. I really should be trying to learn SMW Dev to expand my sprite palettes, I guess.
The bigger one is tall enough that I ran out of room at the top to do a proper wick, but yeah, I'm working on it.
Pokey's current design has the flower on top of his head, but he is stompable in the newer games... I could try going spikey again.
That is the way Nintendo originally did it, and the cloud does sort of hide it: But I attempted to fix the problem anyway:
I am getting a lot of complaints about Monty Mole. Here's what I used for reference, from Mario Party Advance: I'm not that familiar with Paper Mario. Is it like this?: Looks like he's got a red nose, white lips, whiskers, and sunglasses? I could give that a shot.
Yoshi's got a much smaller body now than he did in Super Mario World. He's become much more frog-like than dinosaur-like over the years. I tried to make a compromise between the old style and new. The way the tiles are arranged forces him to be more elongated than I'd like. I'll see what I can do about tweaking his proportions.
I wasn't really planning on doing all the environmental stuff, but I am considering it now. Tiles are harder than sprites because they can be combined so many different ways and you have to account for all of the possibilities. I do think that I'll still release a sprites only patch first so that other people can check them out, and I'll go from there. I want to do my own hack eventually, but I will make use of whatever work I do here in that. Originally posted by eternaldragonx Heh. Never tried Zelda sprites. You'd have to let me know what style the rest of your game was in before I could attempt Link. OK, here's what I've got done over the past several days: Buzzy Beetle: Couldn't get red glowing eyes to look right, so I just made them white. Blargg: Stayed with dino form instead of going the Yoshi's Island route. Not my ideal palette, but I couldn't figure out how to change anything except for his eyes poking out of the water before he lunges out. Ball 'n' Chain: Made it spikier looking. The chain link stayed pretty much the same. Podobo: Got rid of the flashing look and gave him a glowing mouth like in Yoshi's Story. Not sure about this one... Dino Rhino and Dino Torch: Redrawn to look more like Nintendo's artwork. I should probably take this approach if I redo Reznor. P-Switch and Feather: Randomly redrawn items... Blurp: Nothing too exciting here. Yes, I'm calling this fish Blurp and the red flying ones Cheep Cheeps. I'm thinking Nintendo's name switch is one of those Birdo/Ostro things where they just screwed up. Rip Van Fish: He has teeth now and generally looks a little more psychotic when he's chasing you. Torpedo Ted: Yup, that's an underwater Bullet Bill, all right. Urchin: Redrawn to look a bit more like Nintendo's art. Not entirely happy with its spines, but this thing is so heavily mirrored it's a bit hard to work with. Baby Yoshi: Went with their look from Tetris Attack. Iggy and Larry: Well, this is how I wanted them to look, but it turns out they share hair, so this isn't going to work. Thereare two unused hair tiles that were apparently meant for Larry, but they're not programmed in. I'm going to have to figure out some hair that will work for both of them, which won't be easy since they have such different hairstyles... Baby Mario: This set's almost complete. Just need to do climbing graphics and some cutscene stuff. Mario: Getting closer to done. I just need to do cape stuff and some cutscene graphics. The flying graphics are going to be tough, though. |

Hot damn. I must admit, that Blargg sprite looks sexy (in a non-sexual manner, of course). However, the only way I see it working is if you touch up the lava. Oh, and Mega Mole might look a little better if his arms swaying as he walked was a little more defined. | |||

Holy Bajebus! If ANYONE thinks they can do better sprites, I doubt it.
Word of warning Ice: If noobs or not-so-nooby people with no life want your sprites, say no. They are yours, and should always be yours. I can't wait to see what you'll do with the FG/BG (if you edit them). |

Great new group of sprites, especially considering that you're actually trying to work inside the game's limitations instead of expanding it with some form of hacking.
Just a few comments... Dino Torch should have a little bit of flame coming out of his mouth in the side view, because otherwise it looks weird. Secondly, the slight bend in the Feather should probably go the other way, considering its flight path. The dithering effect on Blargg doesn't look all that bad, actually. Makes him seem more like a creature that's been hanging around in the lava long enough to get pretty rough-skinned. |

Originally posted by icegoom Funny thing is that Iggy and Larry have their own hair in the ending: Also, you need to do Morton's "fire breathing" sprite, as it is shown here in the ending. And for some reason, Ludwig has some of Morton's tiles in the ending. Someone should somehow hack that screen and correct it. It could have been worse, though... And since the tile mappings for Morton, Roy, and Ludwig have been found (see Page 2 of this thread), someone should find Iggy and Larry's tile mappings so they could have their own individual hair like in the ending. |

i'm glad to see the small(baby) mario sprites coming along nicely.
if the cape is a seperate sprite (as opposed to a seperate mario sprite set) you could make it a little bit more defined, also the flying animation (or more precicely the "crashing" one) could use somewhat of a adaptation to suit the style of the sprites more |

Originally posted by Glyph PhoenixIt is certainly possible with something as mundane as ExAnimation to add extra frames to a sprite. I oughta write up a little tutorial for it. Only problem is that you're gonna end up using at least one (possibly more) entry for every sprite you're expanding, which can lead to some glitches if you use it on too many at once. But the effect, should you pull it off, would be worth it. Just don't overdo it. |
