Christmas Tree or Holiday Tree?Supposedly on the city of Boston website called the annual tree lighting ceremony a "the annual holiday tree lighting ceremony" but there is some hoopla over it from the people, the mayor, and even the ACLU | Christmas Tree |

That is a Christmas Tree if I ever saw one. Holiday Tree just doesn't have that certain touch to the phrase...

I...think...he's trying to make one of those hilarious
"OMG THEY R TAKEN GOD OUT OF A COMMERZIAL HOLIDAYZ!" statements I've heard so often. God's got nothing to do with Chirstmas anymore. Christmas is commercial, first-and-foremost. The faithful will praise the Lord. Let all the others have it for what it is...a holiday. That's a Christmas tree to me, to someone else it is a Holiday Tree. But rather...I see it is a debauchery of what should be considered a sanctified ceremonial holiday. |

Seriously, name one Christian holiday that isn't commercially exploited in some manner. Granted, I only celebrate these holidays because I still live with my parents and grandmother so I have no choice, and maybe there's one that I don't know about. But really, it's the natural direction of business to forget about the religious signifigance of a holiday and milk it for all it's worth, so I'd be amazed if there's still one they haven't touched. |

Originally posted by ZiffOkay, sorry about my previous statement, it was one of those "I'll say this because that's what everyone is saying" things. Like right now, I'm agreeing with you. I guess I was only thinking of holidays I only knew well, which happen to be very commercial. But I still want to stick to what I said. When you see a Jesus action figure, you just don't feel the same anymore... This is really sad. (cool, I made a smilely a link) ~My 100th post~ |

Seeing as how (afaik) no other holiday involves a decorated tree, calling a Christmas tree a "holiday tree" makes about as much sense as calling a menorah a "holiday candelabrum".
Really though, the only thing a Christmas tree has to do with Christianity, is that they both have the word "Christ" in them. It's really just another Pagan ritual assimilated into Christian culture, if the Christian Right really wants to preserve Christmas as a Christian holiday, they should drop the whole tree concept altogether. Pentecost, Ascencion, Advent (advent du'nt git 'sploited cuz them's already 'sploitin' x-muss when advent comes 'round) - can't remember seeing them be exploited by commercial institutions.

Originally posted by Ziff if 'he' is referring to me...you are wrong, I could care less what they called the tree. Yes, I too would call it a christmas tree. I just wondered why someone would make the effort to say holiday tree when 99% of the world thinks of it as a christmas tree and why there is even news stories on the fact that that someone decided to call a christmas tree a holiday tree. |

Although it really isn't a huge thing anymore, nonetheless it is on Sept. 29. It is celebrated quite widely in the Toronto Catholic community.
I'd honestly like to see Lent get commercialized. It'd be sacreligiously funny. |

I think Christmas is fun. Let me have my fun. I don't even see it as a religious holiday anymore, I like the fact that once a year I can celebrate being able to give stuff away and watch everyone for once be nice and charitable to others. Except where Christmas brings out the best in people it also brings out the worst...
