I was thinking of making one too. (Also read some of the linked articles.)
When are they going to learn? The music industry survived just fine during the eras of records, 8-tracks, tapes, and so many unprotected CDs, despite piracy. People don't want to pay super-inflated prices for something they can barely use. It's the main reason I don't buy these things anymore. If I want music I download some nice public-domain stuff or put the radio on. When I want to watch a movie I go to the theater. It'll be a cold day in hell that you catch me knowingly buying anything that supports DRM. I think this quote from one of those pages sums up my opinion well:

There's reasons why i'm voting for this party this year.
Thanks DRM, but i think that the more strict they go, the more they're going to kill themself as orgnizations against them will only grow stronger and stronger by pure hate. |

I built a MythTV, but it doesn't have any type of HDTV tuner, so I'm not not really effected by this, atleast for now. Anyway if you're thinking about building one, I say build it anyway. Even if future HDTV tuners require DRM, its not like they're going to go around confiscating all the old ones. Even they did, in the meantime yo'll have a PVR, which is great. It's like having your own network that only plays shows you want to watch. This is my network's line-up:
Family Guy Simpsons Whose Line is it Anyway? Quantum Leap Daily Show Colbert Report Simpsons Family Guy NOVA Simpsons Whose Line is it Anyway? etc...etc...It's great. |

Audio versions of DRM include Apple's FairPlay scheme, which prevents iTunes customers from sharing a song with a friend or playing the song on an MP3 player that isn't an iPod. Sony made waves in the fall when it secretly installed spyware on users' computers to prevent them from turning CD tracks into MP3s" Nice move, assclowns. Remind me to never buy any of your products. I already knew about the Sony one, though. Ailure: I´ve thought of voting for that party too. |

Hey, I'm buying CDs, but none that has to do with DRM crap.
Seriously, they couldn't care less about Metal bands (european ones, that is) |

To be fair, FairPlay only applies, as far as I can tell, to songs/videos bought from iTMS. Gee, wonder how you could render that inapplicable. _¬ (edited by drjayphd + on 03-09-06 11:51 AM) |

Actually iTunes by default encrypts CDs you rip in their crippled format, and the option to turn it off is burried somewhere in dialog boxes. Better off using CDex or Konqueror to rip CDs. | |||

Originally posted by FreeDOS + Does it now. I've downloaded my fair share of albums in M4A format (hooray Soulseek) and they've played fine, as have ones I've shared. So it's only crippled if you don't use iTunes... but I do. |

Originally posted by FreeDOS +Konqueror rips cd's too? I never noticed that feature before. In other news, CD's and DVD's wouldn't cost so damn much if they didn't waste so much money on the DRM stuff. Further, they wouldn't NEED to waste money on the DRM stuff if the government would crack down HARD on piracy and just crucified a few of the more major offenders. |

Originally posted by emcee Who needs to confiscate? If DRM support becomes mandatory, your old non-compliant tuner simply won't work anymore. Ailure: If only they had such a party here, I'd vote for them. Though I think they'd get more votes with a different name. |
