| I have two different Image editors on my computer, YY-CHR and MrClicks TilEd, and it seems that no matter what ROM I open, I get a buch of (what seems like) random pixels. The ROMs that I've tried them on are, Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, Golden Sun, and FF 1 & 2 Dawn of Souls. I was thinking that maybe they were compresed, and if they are are there any programs I can use to decompress them? Also, it would be so much easier if there was a universal image exporting/importing program, if there is one where could I find it? | |||

| No ROM has graphics data right on the start. The blaring static you see is code and non-graphics data being misunderstood as graphics. That's because, aside from certain flavors of NES roms, there's no real distinction between the three data types.
If you don't grok that, you shouldn't be trying to graphics-hack. |

| It's a technical limitation. The distinction can only be made if the image editor had a... map of sorts that says where the graphics are. But no editor programmer is insane enough to write half an emulator to trace out that map!
And -that- sucks. NES roms can have two kinds of chips: Program and Character rom. Those with this distinction can often be loaded into, say, TLP and it'll show and edit only the CHRROM banks. It doesn't always work. Probably involves the game's use of specific mapper chips. |

| Just scroll down, you'll find the sprites soon enough. | |||

| Not quite. The whole thing is just random-looking green pixels, unless I change the pallete then they are different colors ^^ | |||

| Yes, usually. I know for a fact that Fire Emblem 6~8 have their item icons, battle numbers, and, in the case of eight, even the mugs are uncompressed (english only~). | |||

At least there's built in palletes. Think of what would be said about having all black ![]() |
