Recently, I found out about a type of paint that bonds to plastic, as regular paint would just chip right off. Despite my misgivings about it in that other topic, I think I want to get a DS Lite. Problem is, I just bought my Graphite Black DS a few short weeks ago. I've decided that rather than try to sell the black DS, I'd give it as a gift to a friend who's a major fan of the GBA, but hasn't made his mind up about the worthiness of the DS yet. He's also a major Zelda fan, so I've decided to use that plastic-bonding paint to make a Triforce decal on the back of the system. It will be my first time modding any system I've ever owned, so I was wondering, has anyone else ever modded their systems, be it internally or cosmetically? How'd it go? Would you reccomend it to others? Got any pics?

Nope. Modding a system is more work than it's worth, unless you're dying to play imports. If you're talking about recoloring and stuff, that's a no as well. No real point to doing so. After all, it's a game console, not drapes. The fancy custom styles are hardly necessary, and aren't worth the money or the risk.

I've done many mods. I've moded both my PSX and PS2 and my sister's, and a couple of friend's. I've done repairs and other modifications to Gameboy Pockets and Colors, and lost many others in the name of sceince xD I've done numerous mods to SNES and SFC systems, most of them simply filing off the tabs preventing SFC games to be played.
My current modification project is a kind of portable NES system using a pirated NES-on-a-chip and other NES parts. It will work with Famicom games, too (I just need to converter in my Gyromite game). I just need to figure out a couple of circuits on this board...its my main hardware moding project, along side my dissection of the SNES for 'educational' purposes. Oh, and I broke Deadly Towers with a hammer. I call this a mod because I made it enhanced and better than what it actualy was. Yes it is a much better game when it is in little peices .__. |

I never have, but my husband did. Several times. He installed a mod chip in his old-style PSX. When that started to die, he transferred the chip to a PS One, adding a switch on the front. It was an ugly mod (he burned a hole for the switch using the soldering iron ), but it worked. Our PS2 has a clear blue flip top case and a 100+ GB hard drive loaded with most of our favorite games (including the CD-based ones - like Marvel vs. Capcom 2 - that the system hates to read...not having to worry about spending 20 minutes trying to boot the damn game when friends come over is a very good thing indeed).
Our first GBA had a backlight, but I can't remember if Rando installed an Afterburner mod himself or if he bought it already modded. |

Nope. Technically speaking, my PSX is modded but it's an external mod chip that works very well, so I'm not voiding the warranty or anything. Aside from that, never really needed to... and the Gamecube isn't something that can be modded. :\

I once placed a sticker on my NES.
That is about as much 'modding' I can do without killing myself or hurting the console. |

I opened up my NES to clean the connector a long time ago, it's worked flawlessly ever since.
Until I decided to shell out $150 for the new model PS2 I was "repairing" it my old one monthly so it could read CDs again... |

I bought my Cube premodded, but else, both my GBAs have afterburners installed. I don't have a SP (anymore) so it's quite confient to play GBx games on it.
My DS got flashme installed, but didn't do it myself. But it's seriously overdue for a casemod, as it's broken at the hinge. so it wobbles around. I fastened it with some duct tape. (CBD Quote: Duct-Tape, I hates ze Duct Tape). |

Originally posted by Colin So that's why you wanted my PsX!! As mentioned before, I have a chip in my Xbox, plus I have a larger harddrive so I can save more games. Plus I have a CD that has over 2,000 games from all the old systems..up to the SNES. I need to find an emu for the Saturn, tho. Once I get an A/V cable for my Dreamcast, I'm gonna have a friend at work to mod it..or whatever it was that lets you d/l any DC game. |

I FlashMe'd my DS, but softmods don't really count IMO.
I did, however, take apart my PSX and:
And yes, I burned/melted all the holes with the soldering iron. Done right it can look pretty neat, makes a mess of the iron though. I figure I might get another one sometime, and do the same but make the lid switch open/close/auto (keeping the original sensor). Or try to hook it up to a CD-ROM drive, and if successful, casemod it. Other mods I've done include:
Also, there are GCN mod chips of sorts. And the region select hack is ridiculously easy. (edited by Hyper LOL - + on 02-14-06 06:21 PM) |

Well, by "modded" I basically meant "playing copies" but yeah. That definitely would work.
I know you can theoretically mod the Gamecube but it's not cheap/easy. You need to run through a lot of hoops. |

I may in the future, but eh. |

I modded my friends X-Box with him. He works in Blockbuster, so what he does is brings his X-Box to work and rips the games to it. The boss is cool with it, too.

NSNick: Au contraire! I saw the coolest mod at the crazy gamer store in the mall downtown. A GameCube taken apart and put inside of an AT-ST. It was fuckin' bad ass. I don't even like Star Wars, and that gets my geek-juices flowing. Hyper LOL: I FlashMe'd my DS, but softmods don't really count IMO. FlashMe is the one where you have to re-write the firmware of the DS and short the S1 thing, right? That's quite a significant mod, if you ask me. Plus Sign Abomination: I modded my friends X-Box with him. He works in Blockbuster, so what he does is brings his X-Box to work and rips the games to it. The boss is cool with it, too. If you don't blackmail them (the manager could get fired, and your friend could get worse), you will lose any and all respect that Black Mage might have had for you, if he were a real person, and had respect for you in the first place. ... Just do it. |

Yes, FlashMe is a firmware hack. Technically it's modifying the system, but when people say 'mod' I tend to think hardware hacking... all you do with FlashMe is stick something in a hole and run a program. |
