I appreciate your sincerity guys, because flattering comments might be nice and inspiring, but they don't really help to improve.

I deeply respect your opinion, even if I don't always agree.

My approach at hacking SMW is different to that of other hackers, who have a purist approach. What I like about hacking is the concept of making impossible things possible; pushing the limits, using both very technical hacks, and simple ingenuity to overcome obstacles.

Some comments:

1 . Chiaki is a japanese name. It's a homage to actress Chiaki Kuriyama, who played parts in two of my favorite movies: Battle Royale and Kill Bill. Therefore, using hiragana is correct.

2 . I'm not pretending to be japanese, just as I'm not pretending to be english or american by writing in English now.

3 . I did study japanese for a while, back in 1998 when anime wasn't the perhaps annoying fad it is today.

4. I don't usually draw in anime style, unless I'm asked to by my editors, or when I feel like it.

5. No, of course I was NOT going to use Bowser as a final boss!

6. I can't say if the concept of my game "blows" or not. All I can say is I'm an award-winning comics artist and writer and I make a living of it. I like what I do, editors buy my stuff and people like it, and that's enough for me.

7. In any case, I think my story has 'some' more levels of depth and interest that the "plumber fights turtles to save princess" concept which is OK for a platform action game for kids, but that's not the intended target of my game.

8. I think some of you guys should take it easy. I don't enjoy all the otaku-freak fad myself, but overreacting won't make it disappear, and you'll only alienate people and frustrate yourself. I don't approve fanatism, either pro or anti-whatever it is.

9. I also think you should open your mind to other things. That way you could see the potential beyond what already exists.

10. Experience has taught me that imagination is both a gift and a skill that is trained. We all developed it when we played when we were kids. Unfortunately, most people stop doing it when they grow up, and their imagination is restricted by conventionalism and the practical limits of everyday life. I think that's a tragedy, don't let that happen to you.

QFE. Quoted for pure, factual emphasis. I mean, look. You open our minds to new styles of graphics (3D-Esque ones in particular). Why do you people refuse to do the same for storyline? Just because you don't see a way to do something doesn't mean he doesn't. Besides, if nobody ever tried to do something or think of something in a way that nobody else has before, we never would've had many of the inventions we have today. You might find it funny and pathetic now, but who knows. Maybe when and if this gets finished, it'll revolutionize SMW Hacking.

Alastor,

These are the SMW title screens in Japanese and English releases...

Can you see how the earlier japanese release has WESTERN CHARACTERS?

So if I look stupid for using foreign characters for merely aesthetic purposes, that's EXACTLY the same thing Shigeru Miyamoto and Nintendo did.

So, are SMW creators stupid? Is that what you're saying?

Yeah... There are problems with this analogy. The attitude in Japan is different from that of over here; they have rather embraced English culture, and it's rather become accepted over there. In *most* other places, Japanese things are only used quite frequently among the otaku crowd... And you probably know what many people think of them. Since you use English characters to represent that name elsewhere, using Japanese characters here seems... Unnecessary at best, and rather stupid at worst.

Besides, that was over 15 years ago. Things have changed since then.

And it's not like the SMW creators are faultless; just look at all the other things they've done wrong

Shigeryu Miyamoto didn't make the game. He just did concepts. Also, he was actually japanese and not trying to look it.

No, not you specifically. I mean everyone in this topic that's bickering about "OMG ANIME"
Which would involve you, but I'm not picking you out.

Alastor,

It's not different at all.

Japanese use English in their trademarks for the international, 'prestigious' feel. The same happens in mostly every country in the world.

And it's a fact that japanese culture is fully embraced by the current generation of teenagers and 20-something's. And it's a worldwide phenomenon: It's happening in the Americas, Europe, Asia, Australia...

So in the whole world Japanese is 'trendy', just like English is 'trendy' for the Japanese. And that's all there is to it. It's not like civilians are dying because of it, it's just a fad, and I didn't invent it.

So if you don't like it, you better be patient, because it won't end until a future generation hates it because their parents loved it. We're talking 15 to 30 years. Get over it.

Ph00kedUp,

You've convinced me, i'll give up the japanese fad, because it's much cooler to have a 1337 H4X0R username... Give me a break

You know, judging a SMW hack by its storyline and style is just stupid as is. If this was an RPG, it would be different, but SMW isn't a story crucial game.

It all matters on the gameplay and atmosphere.

jp: Your hack is indeed different. It looks neat and does actually look to have some different gameplay elements. However, like I say all the time, I'll have to play it before jumping to radical conclusions.

And I will quote

Wait until you actually get a grasp for how well a game will or will not work by being able to play it... especially when you're critiquing gameplay mechanics.

Kins: Sky color? Who would complain about that? Nothing a palette change can fix, right?

This drama makes me want to post a picture that my friend has, but I think it would offend people, so I won't. You cannot not offend people anyway...

There is no official word on it, but it's apparant that it is mostly true. Just look at the number of "japanese cartoon conventions" popping up all over the place.

Going off-topic a little, my problem with RPGs is that they're all story, and low on gameplay. They're just not difficult, even if they're action-based (IE: Kingdom Hearts). You can give specific strategies there, but you can't give much advice when giving someone help a platformer like Mario.

Personally I like the style. Japanese text, to me, has always been something different, something that's both tangible and intangible, and it's get a peculiar property around it. I guess I can't describe it better than that, but I like the style. jp, I think oyu should keep it the way it is, it looks perfectly fine.

A google search of Pokemon returns 74,000,000 pages

Superman returns only 39,000,000

Trivia : Apparently, "bush" on google returns 666,000,000 pages...!
