For those who are using contraception...what do you use? Why did you choose it? How well does it work for you?
Rando and I used condoms for a while because they're available over the counter, cheap, and very reliable if used properly. They were a little awkward, but they never broke or otherwise failed. I wanted hormonal birth control because I hated my long, HEAVY, disgusting periods with cramps that sometimes had me curled up in bed snarfing Midol, and hormonal BC tends to decrease flow significantly. While researching options, I came across my holy grail of contraception - the Mirena IUD. It lasts five years, is statistically more effective than sterilization, and decreases period flow by up to 96%. I was afraid that I would have trouble finding a doctor to put one in for me, as I have not had children and many doctors are antsy about giving nulliparous women an IUD (for various reasons, many of which are overly cautious bullshit), but the first gynecologist I talked to approved me with no fuss at all. Insertion hurt like a bastage, and I had bend-over cramps for a couple of days afterward, but it was so well worth it. I have experienced the amazing period reduction (I seriously barely notice it's there - which is an almost unbelievable improvement from how crap it used to be) and I love not having to think about my contraception at all. It's just there and it works. If I had not been able to get a Mirena, I would have gone for the NuvaRing instead. It has the "set it and forget it" advantage (you leave each ring in for three weeks), and it does help regulate periods. |

My gf is on the pill, and I still get condoms, for that extra sense of protection. We do not want, nor can afford any unexpected surprises right now... Someday we will be willing to, but not now.
And so far so good... and guys, make sure you use the condoms properly, I know a lot of guys that would orgasm and continue because they had a condom on, not a good idea. |

I use the pill, even though I 'aint gettin' any lately. I'm on it for two reasons. The first obviously is birth control if I get lucky.
The second's related to my surgery, because if I'm not on the pill I get sharp stabbing pains where my ovary used to be around the time of my period (as bad as they were prior to the surgery). The gynecologist says to skip a period and I need to be on the pill for that. The pains are much less of a problem then. |

I used to be on the pill nack in 2000, but I gained weight from it, so I stopped. I haven't been on/used anything else since.

I´ve heard that the pills can have a lot of side effects so I wouldn´t recommend it. They had a report about it in the newspaper about people whose lives had been ruined because of the pills.
A condom is better, I think. |

my wife is on the pill.... and that's all we use usually
unless she forgets one.... then we'll use condoms for the rest of the "month" and then stop the next time around so far no babies using that method and we've been married for 16 months now. |

Um... gee. Pretty obvious answer over here.
If anything DID happen in the next little while, however, I would use a condom unless I had solid proof that the girl in question was currently on the pill. ...Hell, even then I'd play it safe. The fewer problems, the better. |

Birth control pills permanently lower a woman's sex drive.
Not that that's got anything to do with me, I just thought I'd point it out since noone else has. |

As far as I can tell from my own research, there isn't enough evidence to make a blanket statement such as "Birth control pills permanently lower a woman's sex drive."
The general consensus is summed up here in the wikipedia article: "The effect of the Pill on a woman’s sexuality are difficult to judge; depending on the individual and the particular formula, the Pill may enhance or disrupt a woman’s (or couple’s) sex life. Neither the woman who uses the Pill nor her partner need take any special action before or during intercourse, which makes birth control “invisible” and sex spontaneous and more natural. When combined with the Pill’s high degree of effectiveness, this may enable the couple, and especially the woman, to relax more easily during sex. Masters and Johnson, among others, reported more than one woman who experienced her first orgasm during intercourse shortly after going on the Pill. On the other hand, the Pill’s various side effects may prove disruptive on a physiological or even a psychological level. The hormonal disruption caused by the Pill may result in mood swings, lower libido, excessive or insufficient vaginal lubrication during intercourse, and possibly an injured self-image due to weight gain. Some women who use the Pill despite the teachings of their religious traditions may feel conscious or unconscious guilt; others may not fully trust an “invisible” method of birth control. This wide range of variables makes prediction of the Pill’s effect on sexuality difficult, but the fact that the Pill can and does have an impact in this area, for good or for ill, is well-documented." |

Most guys in school "pull," which is why there are like 9430954680 pregnant girls at school.

Yeah most guys in my school "pull" to. Which is effing retarded. A girl went into labor during my spanish class the other day. And there's a high drop out rate for senior girls. It's one of the lovely lovely aspects of my school.
My sister needed the morning after pill when her idiot boyfriend said he'd "pull" and he didn't. So we had to cut school and get our asses to planned parenthood in the city to get the morning after pill. We didn't get caught, which amazes me.. but I just wish she'd be more careful. She has been since then. |

Yeah, what's really asshole-y is that most of the guys here are just too cheap to buy condoms. I mean, Christ that's cheap.

You guys are extremely lucky.. because guys come.. before they come. Like.. there's pre-ejaculatory fluid.
If you time it right, you won't get pregnant though without a condom. Right after your period you can't get pregnant because there's no egg present. But if it were me... I'd still opt for the condom. Just in case. |

I can't have sex after my period. Mine lasts for about two to three days and if I have sex right after it ends, it'll return for another 2 days or so. So I tend to wait about 3 to 5 days after.

My take would be that a box of condoms is going to last someone a while, if you're only doing it one/two times a week. So if you don't even want to put down the money on THAT...
Anya: Start using them. |

It's been 7 years already...not gonna.
We plan on having kids in about a year or two, but if it happens now, then thats okay too. Like I said, he's been pulling out for 7 years (actually, at first we used condoms) and its been okay. ...don't jinx us now!!! |

Yes, you've managed to successfully beat the odds for 7 years. That's VERY impressive.
I'd just get the box out of the way so that you can say you used them. |
