Originally posted by Danielle lolrz. It's more than trying a new sound. Major labels always have major influence. And while the label's sound often makes the band more marketable, it also alienates the old fans. I mean how many people did you see wearing Green Day stuff a couple of years ago as compared to today when half the kids at the mall are wearing "American Idiot" (ironic) shirts from Hot Topic. |

So, because their fanbase expanded they're sellouts?
They thought they were gonna faceplant with this album because it's a "rock opera" of sorts, and that isn't done very often in the music world. But instead, they came out on top. How is that a bad thing? And you keep going on about the label, but they've had the same label since Dookie. Arwon, Minority is a song, not an album. The song was released on Warning, if that's what you meant. |

Keep in mind that in order to expand their fanbase they changed their sound into popier crap. Plus think about how much Green Day merchandise has made its way to stores since they signed with Edit: Corrected (edited by Wurl on 02-05-06 05:22 PM) |

I don't believe I ever called them sell outs. I said that they have changed their genres and that it is not the same damned band. The band members have CHANGED. I used to like their style of childish punk. The band matured, I however don't like the new product. Plain and simple. Dookie was still a straight up punk (if not a little poppy) album.
They used to be on Look Out! and Reprise. They've never been on Capitol. |

Lookout! was before Dookie. Before almost anyone knew who they were. Dookie-American Idiot is all Reprise, so that argument fails for Wurl.
Anything else is pretty much opinion. |

Huh, I thought they were on Capitol. Doesn't change the fact that they suck. Also they weren't straight up punk at any point. They've always been hella pop-y.
Edit: Ha! They're signed under Warner. (edited by Wurl on 02-05-06 05:21 PM) |

Arwon - I also like the Talking Heads, but i cant say anything about whether or not they "sold out" over time because i only own thier 1st 4 albums and have'nt heard anything else. I really love "Fear of Music" and "77" though. I have not heard Augie March, but i do listen to Australian bands, some of my favorite bands are from Australia.. Radio Birdman, Richard Davies, Terracid, Love & Death, lots of good stuff from down there. You mentioned Deerhoof earlier, i just bought a Deerhoof album, i have'nt listened to it yet though. I had a 7" from them many years ago but i lost it.
Just because a band's sound changes does'nt mean they sold out, i dont think anyone is argueing that. People grow and get bored making the same sound all the time and try something different. It's when they let marketing influence their sound, or do whatever they can to get as many people to like them as possible without regard to artistic integrity that they become sell-outs. Like when one band has just become a hit, then a bunch of other bands think "hmmm, i bet i could sound just like that!" |

A good example of sellouts would be Devo. Google search for Dev2.0 sometime. It's a disney-owned band of kids playing neutered Devo songs.
On Talking Heads: They never "sold out" because they never claimed not to be "sellouts" and becuase they maintained a great deal of credibility. They made arty pop music and they did it well. They did, however go through at least 3 fairly distinct periods... generally the third isn't considered quite up to the standard (but given the brilliance of their initial run of albums that's gotta be expected). I highly recommend Little Creatures if you haven't heard it. Plus David Byrne is something of a hero of mine, and he still rocks, which is rare for an aging rock legend. Also done on naming some good Aussie bands instead of the usual suspects. I don't generally have a high opinion of the Australian music scene, but we do have a few good bands. Danielle: That's indeed what I meant. I guess I forgot which single was also the album name. |

Originally posted by Snow Tomato uhhhh, what? as far as selling out goes, for many people/bands/whatever, the prospect of getting a big paycheck in return for catering to a certain audience is tempting, and it definitely has a tradition of corrupting the music. promotion and distribution depend a lot on the label wants to do with a band, and that depends on what the band produces for its label, the pushiness of the label, etc, etc. imagine if you were a big record company. you're going to push what you think will sell, and you're going to try to push bands to produce what will sell, and offer them greater promotion to persuade them. it's all kind of complicated. but anyway, deerhoof totally ruled when they were a art-rock noise band. i saw them the other week and they were kind of a let down. you'd think they'd spaz out on stage, but the closest they came to that was for their 4-foot-tall asian singer to bounce up an down (which was the only time you could even see her). |

Arwon - Please dont destroy my image of Devo, I only have their 1st album but i really like it. Are the rest really that bad? Australia's music scene is a bit of a mystery, there are several bands down there i really like, but i know little about it outside of those. New Zealand on the other hand....
I still have'nt had a chance to listen to my new Deerhoof album, i got real busy all of a sudden, but it will happen soon! Have they become more like Melt-banana? The Deerhoof 7" I used to have was kinda odd, but not spastic. Melt-Banana is spastic personified. I saw them live in 99, and they were just like that live to. |

Dev2.0 They had a few good albums back in the day. This, however, is what I am referring to... somehow they decided it was a good idea to let disney do this. |

Melt Banana is awesome.
However, art noise pisses me off. I just find it a debasing to the entire arm of the genre (the modern version of noise anyway) that crawled out of the ass of punk and metal. Perhaps it's just the fact that I'm in a noise-core band that uses theatrics and gets peeved off when people try to analyze our "music". I have no clue. |

I feel the need to point out a few things:
A. If Moby is a sellout, it's because he licensed AN ENTIRE DAMN ALBUM to various corporations long before his latest release. B. One of the Devo guys actually did the theme for Rugrats, so the band's association with Disney (Yes, I know the Rugrats aren't Disney-owned) really shouldn't come as that much of a surprise. |

I'm going to admit to something a little flaky here -- I get slightly annoyed when a band I am very fond of becomes ridiculously overhyped / popular overnight.
I can't quite pinpoint what it is, but I think part of it is how fandom of that band changes when this happens. It becomes.... diluted. See, there are more fans (and more critics) but they don't seem to know as much about the artists, have followed things as closely, base things entirely off of TV appearances and high-rotation airplay singles. But once a band becomes very popular, it becomes harder to find another fan who enjoys that artists' music in-depth, who has bothered to go beyond the singles and who finds that that music really actually means something to them. Who gets the bands in-jokes, etc. So when you say you like a certain band, you either get criticism that they're "crap" out of hand (based on one or two songs) or you get fans who have only heard one or two songs and don't really care about the music the same way you do, and only like it on a moderately superficial basis. It's petty and it's stupid, but it does kinda dilute that sense of being in a community of fans. Oh and on Green Day -- I just don't like American Idiot. I guess I just don't think it's their best album / it doesn't appeal to me. But then, it does seem to be written more to appeal to younger people and I doubt I am in Green Day's target audience right now. |
