I've always belived that constant politeness to everyone is a sign of massive dishonesty. It seems to me that truely honest people say what they think, when they think it. Not only that, but the honest say it with an emphasis on clarity and NOT an emphasis on avoiding hurting people's poor delicate feelings. I think political correctness and euphamistic language are forms of lying that mask the speaker's true felings.
This country could do with alot less politeness and political correctness. What do you think? Are polite/pc people being dishonest? |

I don't think yes and no are correct answers no matter how you look at it.
Politeness is sometimes a form of respect, sometimes a form of self-respect, and then you have the dishonesty. Bluntness, what you're refering too, isn't always right either. Think before you leap comes to mind, if you don't think about what you say, you're acting off of impulses and might not actually belive what you just said. If you want complete truth, there is no reason for it to be completely harsh and it can be addressed when its best. If you want to humiliate someone in the middle of a crowd because you think they dye their hair because you think they have white hair. Well, then you're just being a bastard. |

Some people are better off not know what people think about them... But I guess if that person is devastated by what people say, then that person has issues?
So, if you didn't like your boss, you would tell them off? And if they fire you, you will go off and look for another job? |

Aaand here we're getting into the age-old honesty versus integrity issue. Hint: Integrity wins.

I think there exists no better way to say what he said. And so it doesn't look like I'm sucking up to anyone, you both suck. So do I. |

It's more or less a circumstance by circumstance thing. Sometimes politeness is necessary in order to drive the point across, other times it hampers it. However, drawing too close a parallel to political correctness and politeness is fairly narrow-minded as they are two completely seperate and unique beasts.

note: if this post is TLDR, read Ziff's first post here instead and pretend it was me.
I'd like to be able to pick one and stick with it. Either "all right everyone is going to know exactly what I think and if they don't like it, too bad" or "I'll say what everyone wants to hear and never ever give someone the hard truth!!" No, wait, that second one sucks. All right, I'd like to be able to pick the first one and stick with it. So the way I see it, honesty is the ideal, but politeness is a detour that is almost necessary to living a normal life in society. It would be nice if everyone could handle the blunt truth all the time and nobody ever got offended and did something stupid, but everyone has their moments of irrationality (some more than others). On a more day-to-day basis, it might just be in your best interest to be polite rather than honest. For example, you may think your boss is a total asshole, but telling him that probably won't help anyone, and it'll probably get you fired. It's not feasible to float from job to job until you happen to get a boss who can take everything in stride. (I'm not suggesting anyone would do this anyway. I know this stuff is obvious. I'm using it for the purpose of example, not education.) On the other hand, I may be completely off base here, since I have no experience with an actual (non-familial) relationship, but I think for a lifelong partner it would be necessary for both parties to be able to handle honesty from each other. So, basically, it's not realistic to pick one and run with it. It's a case-by-case thing. Of course, there's a lot of leniency in that grey area. One might tend towards more honesty or more politeness. I'm guessing ||bass means that he tries to opt for honesty most of the time. In my case, I'd like to be honest more often than I am, but I think I usually get it when it's necessary. (edited by Zem on 02-06-06 04:40 PM) |

Catholic school is awesome like that. That plus the girls are all in the uniforms too. Also there tends to be more time for that sort of thing when you aren't on various moralistic missions to save the world/rainforests/poor/etc. Showing off an expensive sports car works better then all the tree hugging and soup... kitchening... in the world. |
