I love Sonic Youth. Maybe I like all these grunge bands because I live in Washington, but they're just <3.
Teenage Riot is one of the best songs I've ever heard, and the band is just insanely great. Any other fans here? |

I like Sonic Youth to. They are'nt grunge or from WA though. They are from New York and pre-date grunge by several years.
The whole Daydream Nation album is great! I cant say they are my favorite band, but i do like them. |

Oh. You're completely correct, sorry about that. Although they sort of are still grunge, if not from Washington (for instance, their touring with Nirvana in 1991 when neither band was known well at all).

Many of my favorite bands are from WA though. Do you like the Beat Happening? Walkabouts? Satisfact? Modest Mouse?
I think they did get lumped in with the whole grunge scene in a round-about way, but to me they dont sound like grunge because of the more experimental nature of their music, with the emphasis on noise experiments and songs in unusual keys rather than on loud sloppy guitars like Nirvana or the later bands copying Nirvana (or Dinosaur Jr., who i always felt Nirvana was copying themselves). |

Originally posted by Jomb Aye, touring with these grunge bands kind of categorized them themselves. Also, I love Beat Happening, Walkabouts, Satisfact, and Modest Mouse. Sub Pop manages to get some seriously great indie/grunge/garage rock artists. |

Sonic Youth rocks! EVOL, dirty, and daydream nation are awesome. I don't really believe they fit in any genre, as it should be. They just sound like... Sonic Youth!

windwaker, you should get dick-slapped for calling them grunge. They're much more avant-garde. Maybe they toured with Nirvana because they were so influential.
That said, they're still a spectabulous band and you should kneel before them. Don't forget Sister, Jin Dogan. |

I saw them live a couple of years ago and just about fell asleep during it. Not sure precisely how that happened, but yeah, I wasn't real impressed--too much jammy wankery for my tastes. I've heard them in recordings too, and it just didn't do it for me. They're one of those bands I just don't *get*.
Yet, oddly, I like My Bloody Valentine, which are also of a genre that possibly only exists in my head and is called fuzz-rock. (edited by Arwon on 02-06-06 11:28 AM) |

Yes! My Bloody Valentine! And YES!! Sonic Youth. I like this thread.
My favorite song by them is "plastic sun". I listen to Sonic Youth with my parents.. when we rock out. Which is frequently. |

hah. they played at my school last year with cat power for spring fling. i didn't go because i find sonic youth kind of boring.
other noteworthy bands: pavement, dismemberment plan, and built to spill also, i could have sworn grunge as a genre was dead. or maybe it was merely supposed to die! |

university of pennsylvania. it was a total flop for turnout because most people were either like "i don't know who sonic youth are" or "i don't really want to see sonic youth." actually, financially it was pretty good because they didn't need such a large venue and i guess sonic youth and cat power don't cost too much to have play. yikes.
i'm pretty sure this year's spring fling will be the furthest thing from indie rock, though, since last year turned out to be a giant mistake. |

Originally posted by mcknasty Hm, that's really WEIRD. I would think that there would be more fans at the 4th(?) best school in the US. At Rutgers last year, they had Wolf Eyes and people went nuts. |

My sister saw Sonic Youth live and told me it was'nt as good as the albums maybe their sound is best in the studio?
I also like Pavement (especially Slanted & Enchanted, nothing else comes close by them) and Built To Spill. Was grunge ever a serious genre? It seemed more like a style of clothing than music, most of what has been called grunge fits better into other categories. |
