You know what I'm talking about. The games based off of TV shows, movies, and other stuff made today just aren't on par with those made many years ago. My opinion is slightly biased, but most people here I presume would agree. Sure, there is the odd good game that fits the above conditions that turns out fine, but...just compare the rest of them to some of the incredible games made many years ago, most notably during the 16-Bit era.
For example, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 4, Toy Story, Aladdin (the Genesis version specifically), Ren and Stimpy: Stimpy's Invention, Bart vs the Space Mutants, Virtual Bart, Goldeneye (yes, I know, it's more recent) and even more obscure games such as Lethal Weapon, Scooby Doo Mysteries and Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers. Granted, there are such games that were made during the early console ages that were not that good or sucked horribly (ET), but those that were more than made up for it. Games like that just don't seem to come around that often anymore. What do you think? |

Most Disney games that were handled by Capcom turned out pretty good. Konami had a knack with the TMNT license as well.
I think the problem these days with games based off movies/TV is time constraints. You don't have time to come up with a quality product that does the show/movie justice; the product *has* to be rushed out ASAP. |

Building on what Colin said, it's more difficult to make games at all with the current technology. It takes longer to make games, and thus while games often have roughly the same deadlines as they used to, they need to be much more rushed than they used to in order to meet these deadlines.

Mobile Suit Gundam: shitic Front was a decent game. I liked it at least. That's the only decent recent TV related game I can think of.

I can understand that. We also know what happens when perfection is demanded. Duke Nukem Forever. And yet, I'm sure you'll agree the deadlines should not be so tight. Granted, there is a "milk it while it's hot" factor involved, but you know what they say. Quality over quantity. Right?

Kyouji: I agree with you, but it still doesn't explain why TV/movie related games seem to have a higher failure rate than other genres. Some of these things seem absolutely embarassing... look at the ER PC game.

DUCKTALES FOR THE FUCKING WIN.
Its funny that even Japan has this problem when making games based on anime. Games like... Cowboy Bebop, Dragonball GT, Samurai Deeper Kyo, Gundam SEED: Never ending Tomorrow, and there's probably a few more too. |

Duck Tales + Darkwing Duck = pwns
When the game were released while the cartoons were playing on channel 11 (WB here in New York) the kids at the time just had to get these games. So like Colin said, Capcom had the Disney games on lockdown. (edited by Googie on 02-02-06 05:44 PM) |

Of course it was easier to make 16-bit games based off of movies. The technology was simpler. Aladdin kicked major ass on the SNES, and it was so simple to play. If the games were simpler, and not as complex.. they might be more interesting.
Most games based on movies try to follow the movie as accuratly as possible, and have long cinematic scenes from the movie with little gameplay. Think of the LOTR games. It seems like the games are created as a way to advertise the movie.. rather than the game existing for the enjoyment of the player. Like they're like a playable preveiw of the movie. Which is why they generally suck. |

Duck tales was indeed the shit. Nearly every Disney related title on the NES was the shit. Even the Little Mermaid was enjoyable (that was my sisters but I still played it. )
However, the original poster mentions some games which I found to be quite subpar. e.g. any Ren and Stimpy game EVER. I can't think of a Simpsons game on NES or SNES that I have enjoyed... Bart Vs. Space Aliens, Bart Vs. the World, Bar'ts Nightmare, I found them all to be lacking severely. Simpsons Road Rage for GC was pretty enjoyable, but even that is a ripoff of Crazy Taxi. Let's not forget games based on Beavis and Butthead. The thing is, to make a game based on a movie/television show, I think the actual movie/tv show has to have some elements of adventure, something to make it worth using as a video game subject. All those shows, Duck Tales, C&C Rescue Rangers, Darkwing Duck, etc, had elements of adventure and danger to them. A game based on Ren and Stimpy is likely going to be full of stupidity and stock sound effects and gags from the show. And who ever played a game to see comedy you've already seen executed 100 times better on the actual show? And correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't there a SNES game based on Beethoven (the family movie about a big dog). Recipe for a yawn. So yeah I think it would be cool to have more games based off of shows, but it would have to be the right kind of shows. And even that's not enough b/c you have to think of fresh situations and gameplay elements to make it fun. |

Ducktales was rather good, but then it's quite intresting to know that the game was Engrish heaven just before it was released if you check a late beta that was leaked. And Transyvenia (which was called just Ghost house in the beta) had a diffrent music and things like crosses on chests was replaced by RIP.
Originally posted by MathOnNapkinsThe game quality could be compared to the old atari games, or most of the modern flash games... and most of thoose are boring. :/ |

The arcade version on The Simpsons was the best Simpsons game (played it to death in the arcades back in 1991). It was similar to TMNT in the arcades and you coulda combine two of the characters for a funny move to kill the enemies (Bart & Lisa would hold hands to run around screaming knocking people out. xD And if three other people woulda join in while one person was playing, the game woulda been even harder (more enemies woulda come out and I think more hits to kill them) |

Well yeah I was referring to console games, not arcade. That Simpsons arcade game was just total ownage. If I could own any Arcade game, it would probably be that. *checks ebay*
