I always chose Charmander. I can't exactly remember why, but it was probably because he resembles a dinosaur. Very appealing in the childhood of YD. I don't know if he was the best choice strategically, but I beat the game, so who cares.
Who did you pick? |

Charmander, always.
Bulbasaur sucks, and although Squirtle is also cute, he never really worked well with me. |

I went with Bulbasaur first. Subsequent playthroughs involved much Squirtle. Only now in Leaf Green am I trying Charmander...

I was all about Planty McPlanterstein. My concept of strategy in RPGs was extremely limited in those days, but I remember I picked the plant for some particular reason.
Oh yeah, I think it was so I'd get a different one than my friend, who chose Fireface, so we could do a trade thing so he could get all 150 (there were only 150 in those days). We used the "cloning trick" of course. (edited by Zem on 01-23-06 08:41 PM) |

Burning Fury FTW. I always chose Charmander-Charmeleon-Charizard for the raw power they had. I was like Lt. Surge except much more badass when I had that game.

Charmander. Because fire burns grass and evaporates water.

Mind you, I always had some killer moves for Blastoise. Blizzard was one of them, you know, before it started to suck and such. |

Originally posted by Danielle Actualy, Bulbasaur became surprisingly usefull with the birth of the second game, and now..well you can some crazy Venusaur movesets I actualy started with Charmander the first time. My mom picked Bulbasaur and my sister was Squirtle, so I picked Charmander to be different. He was actualy probably the worst choice near the beginning..rock and water gyms starting out. I had to train some other Pokemon to take out Brock and Misty (Brock was really hard, I had to get a Butterfree with Sleep Powder and brute force him with Ember ), but overall, I think Charmander is very strong (despite the major flaw in Charizard's Flying/Fire type) and useful much later on in the game I later traded for an Ivysaur from a friend and fell in love with it after second generation breeding came in. |

Charmander because statistically Charizard was supposed to be the most powerful of the three in raw damage in the original pokemon game (though Bulbasaur had the best type advantage for the storyline and Squirtle had more well-rounded stats). Also, he was just too damn cute.
Originally though, before I took strategy into consideration or any kind of appeal or anything, the game book said Bulbasaur was best. So I took him and realized when Gary kept beating my ass down that he was probably a poor choice. JOLTEON!!! AND SUCH. |

I got Squirtle, because the first Gym Leader was Brock, which had rock pokemon, which are weak to water. After that, I kinda ditched Squirtle altogether.

Lots of people don't use their starters overall on their team. I had to cut Meganium from my team in the end when I played Silver.

...the yellow version sprites? Not the Red/Blue version sprites?
But in any case, I chose Bulbasaur as my starter. This is because Venusaur is good in PvP. In the originals, it has the awesome Razor Leaf, which means guaranteed critcal hits. In the remakes, Venusaur has good stalling potential. Charizard has too many weaknesses and too few advantages. It lost all PvP value when the berries were fixed. Squirtle/Blastoise is a great choice and has good defense, but it is outclassed by other water types. Still, it's good in-game. |

Charmander. Dragons. Dracoon like dragons. Dracoon was a caveman in youth.
Seriously though, fire and dragons and such. |

I went with Squirtle to start, actually. :\ Good way to start plus I liked to do some serious levelling early to make sure that he wasn't my only possible choice.

I don't like Charizard. I think he is crappy. I've never really liked using him.
Blastoise is mecha-sweet. A turtle with GUNS!? Hello! Bulbasaur, Ivysaur and Venusaur are all at the same time Communists and Fascist terrorists. |
