Bsnes http://byuu.cinnamonpirate.com/?page=bsnes
A new emulator with some options missing, but the main goal is accuracy. Take a look. |

This is actually a pretty fucking good emulator. Right now I actually prefer it to ZSNES, hopefully in time it will overtake it.

ZSNES is a best emulator. What the hell other emumakers tried to make their own for? Are they tried to make the SNES Emualator better than ZSNES or something? (edited by insectduel on 01-10-06 01:37 PM) |

Right...
ZSNES isn't the best for accuracy, I'll say that much for it...and the newest version is actually worse than 1.36 in some areas (particularly the netplay and screwing up the sound engine in games like TA). I might take a look at it. How good is its accuracy in comparison to something like SNES9x though? |

Originally posted by insectduel No offence, but that post was stupid as fuck. ZSNES still has compatibility issues, and it does have running problems on some computers (including mine). There are some games which don't run properly on ZSNES, such as Earthworm Jim 2 (has problems running on snes9x too), which runs almost perfectly on this emulator. And yes, I'm pretty sure the creator of Bsnes is trying to make it better than ZSNES. Which isnt a bad thing. Personally, I think this is better than snes9x. It's still in early development. The author claim it will take around 2 Ghz to run comfortably. As for the comparison with Snes9x, I don't really know since I rarely use snes9x.

2 GHz for an SNES emu? Owch, I've only got 1.
As for SNES9x, it's the most compatible that I know of. I use ZSNES more, but I know that SNES9x has its moments where it runs games that ZSNES hangs on (the one Ranma ½ RPG comes to mind). |

I know that Earthworm Jims have problems with Zsnes. I should try playing EJ with Snes9x. As for the sound, the Zsnes sound core is based on snes9x I think, right ?

Originally posted by insectduel "Better" is a very subjective term... Anyway, emu devs are not competing. Originally posted by Hiryuu Much more accurate, afaik. Originally posted by Hiryuu See the "Why are the system requirements so high for an SNES emulator?" section on the page Cornellius mentioned. Originally posted by Cornellius EWJ 1 and 2 send data via HDMA to the audio subsystem. ZSNES and SNES9x are a bit off with their HDMA timing (seen that flickering horizontal line in Super Metroid?), and the communication between CPU <-> APU is a bit tricky anyway. If I ever try it. I always use ZSNES. "While a real system can run all of the different parts of a system in parallel, an emulator (usually) cannot." Aha. |

The author is byuu aka byuusama or byuusan. Try reading some of his posts on the Zsnes dev forums some time, along with those of Anomie. You will likely be left scratching your head after the first post you read. The amount of technical detail they go into in terms of timing is remarkable. If anyone could make an accurate emulator, it's this guy.

It seems to have potential, but it also has quite a ways to go.
I won't even consider using the debug version until the next release, due to lack of zip support. As for the main version, I can see myself using it to test things, but regardless of needing a new processor to run it properly (not to mention needing a new processor in general), I won't be using it regularly until the rendering system (which I'm assuming is DirectDraw) has a pixelation option. Emulators with antialiasing make my eyes bleed. Still, I'll probably use it for specific games, mainly ones that ZSNES has trouble with (*makes note to try out Dungeon Master..*) (edited by Kailieann on 01-10-06 07:35 PM) |

Oh come on. SNES ROMs are like 6MB max and compressed to hell anyway.

This is no joke, it really needs around 2 Ghz to run properly. The thing is it's ultra accurate. Think of Nestopia for Nes, except this one is about Snes.

Originally posted by Cornellius I think Nintendulator would be a better analogy. From what I understand about both these emus (Nintendulator, bsnes -- but mostly Nintendulator), they seem to have the same idea. NEStopia strives for performance as well -- so it likely has made some comprimises in terms of accuracy. I don't think it's suitable for such an analogy. I'm not saying NEStopia is inaccurate... but it's no Nintendulator. |

Well, I downloaded this thing yesterday and will try it out soon.
"Try reading some of his posts on the Zsnes dev forums some time, along with those of Anomie. You will likely be left scratching your head after the first post you read." I don´t think I´ll read those posts. I´m not into programming at all so I won´t get anything. |

Originally posted by Kailieann The emulator doesn't use interpolation or other smoothing functions - it's just your gfx card when you're using the card's video RAM instead of system RAM. There's an option in the menu for that. |
