Well. Do you mean if you copy em to a CD and take It to a persons house and they copy it? Yeah, I don't Know how the Police will Track you. But the govenrment guy mite be able to. so if i make a hack, Will i get in trouble? i gotta stop then if thats true.
you also know the sites with ROMS where you dwonload them, once you download the ROM, they store your comp IP thing in there list, the people that host ROMS can turn in the list before you can say, NOT ILLEGAL, seriouly, they can track down all the ROMS you have stored in your comp. if you even have ROMS stored to a list, they will track the disk. SO DON'T COPY TO A DISK. if copyed, Break the damn disk to splithereeins. THIS IS TRUE (edited by UZI in my pocket on 01-07-06 06:57 PM) |

Lookout! John Prescott's about to go all Jackie Chan on your ass! And Uzi, seriously. Please think (and spellcheck) before you post. You said the government might track you, then followed up with saying that the police wouldn't track you. Honestly, that's contradicting right there. Also, how's your Mario hack going? +P |

This is copyright law - no one will really go after you except for the companies that own the copyrights, and, as I've said time and time again, unlike with the deplorable Music industry, they seem to have better things to do than go on an internet piracy witch-hunt.
Bottom line, if you're not openly distributing your ROMs (e.g., selling them, posting them for download on a website, or sharing them all on a File-sharing network of some sort), no one's likely to hunt you down. And by the way, if a higher government agency was really after you, breaking a CD into pieces wouldn't do it. It's still possible to recover data from a broken CD, albeit not all of it, but probably enough to prove the existence of a file on it. The best way to dispose of a CD is somewhere between 5 and 10 seconds in the microwave. It will, however, leave a bit of a smell behind, at the very least, and you could conceivably damage the microwave a bit, so, as they say, adult supervision required |

Hey! Does anyone remember when Official Playstation Magazine joked that a good way of taking care of scratches on game discs was sticking them in the microwave, and all those people actually did it? XD
Has there ever actually been a case of someone getting caught by the police with having ROMS on their PC? |

According to the back of an old Nintendo product, it is not only illegal to create/own/use a duplicate of the game, but also to modify the game or any such duplicates. So it follows that it's slightly worse to have a hacked ROM than a 'fresh' one.
But no, hacking a rom does not increase the likelihood of anyone capable of punishing you caring in any way. So no one is going to come to your house and arrest you for playing someone's (or your) hack of SMB1 on your computer, if that's what you're asking. |

Originally posted by Andy You mean your HD? Yes. If the FBI or whoever really wanted to, there are ways to recover deleted files off of hard drives. Of course there are also programs which attempt to foil such efforts by scrambling the formerly used areas of your HD. But of course for them to do this they'd have to cease your computer... which they'd either need your (or the computer's owner's) consent, or they'd need probable cause (ie, they'd need some other evidence to suggest you have something on your HD which is worth them seizing). So while it is technically possible for something like this to happen... it's not anywhere in the realm of reality.
Erm... that's kind of the point of your IP. The internet needs to know where your computer is so it can reach you. Your IP is essentially a road map to your modem. I'm not sure exactly HOW they'd make the connection. I'd imagine it'd be something as simple as calling your ISP and ask for a billing/service address. I doubt your ISP would try to cover for you ;P I gotta say though.... this all seems pretty ridiculous. It sounds as if you're genuinely worried/concerned that people are going to come after you -- and that's just such a laughable thought. |

Look at this way, here is a conversation that has never happened in real life.
inmate #32542354: "So, what you in for?" inmate #74203443: "Killed a cop" inmate #98043821: "Raped a 6 year old" inmate #09340218: "Ran a meth lab" inmate #09873219: "umm.. I was playing Mega Crap on my computer" other inmates: "You sick piece of shit! We're gonna shank you!" |
