They might be stupid questions, but I've played through the game fairly often AND of course also read countless FAQs. No information source I'm aware of explains these two little things.

1: How do I make the Black Omen appear on the map? It never does when I play.
2: How do I get Magus to join my team? All he'll do is fight me in his palace, he doesn't show up again later.

I have reached a battle with GolemTwins and then Lavos in the Ocean Palace once, yet neither of the above events occured during that runthrough.

I'm pretty rusty on this. Its been years since I've played this game.

1. Are you sure you've reached towards the full, true end of the game? The Black Omen should appear at the end of the game. It'll be floating in the sky, and you need the Epoch to get to it. It does not show up in 2300 AD since the Day of Lavos already passed.

2. Honestly, I'm not sure if you can "try again" to get Magus if you didn't when there was a chance. After you beat Dalton Plus, you go to the North Cape and you'll see Magus there. He'll want to fight, decline, and try to leave. He'll then join you. I'm not exactly sure if you can get back there. But again, its truly been a long time since I've played this.

This could be vague, I'm just reading from my FF: Chronicles guide.

Edit: It really doesn't sound like you're reaching the end of the game, because ...
Spoiler (The Ocean Palace):Is the Black Omen

I see now... Since the game ends when defeating Lavos, that means the Black Omen won't appear if he's beaten in the Ocean Palace part.

Dalton Plus? North Cape? Hmm, it was Dalton who made me fight the GolemTwins. I don't remember if I'd met Dalton Plus. Maybe that form of him is a sidequest. Kinda like the Epoch wings, which I know for certain I've missed on every playthrough.

I guess online guides are more vague than the official kind. Thanks, that information should be very useful.

To me, it sounds a lot like you're beating Lavos at the Ocean Palace.

This is supposed to be next to impossible unless you're playing New Game+ with nearly maxed levels, unless you're playing one of the remakes and they severely dumbed it down.

If you beat Lavos at the Ocean Palace, you're pretty much missing a full third of the storyline.

Beating Lavos is possible there with a lot of overleveling. I'm not sure how you'd beat him without status protection though. I'm assuming you went back to 600AD and did the Sunken Desert sidequest. After you do that you can go to 1000AD and get Vigil Helms. It's not exactly spelled out, I just thought it was pretty clear they wanted you to lose to Lavos in 12000BC.

That Lavos battle in the Ocean Palace is definitely scripted with the idea being, on your first time through at least, you get annihilated. It takes, as said before, really high levels and status protection to even come close to defeating it. Since you haven't seen the whole ending of the game yet, try dying at that part and continue on from there.

That's far beyond my ability! I couldn't even think of beating Lavos at level ~30 or so. I just knew that due to how the game is programmed, the ending would happen upon it's defeat as always.

However, I had no idea about getting annihilated by Lavos because I haven't yet beaten those #*@(# GolemTwins I mentioned twice earlier. Anyway... The information is much appriciated.

Yeah, I remember the Golem Twins were quite possibly the hardest bosses in the game.

But yeah, so it sounds like you're still missing a chunk of the game then.

Just keep in mind there's like 10 different possible endings or so.

And I'm honestly getting an urge to play through this game again. Just wish I could get my hands on an SNES cart of it (I have FF:Chronicles, but the loading times hurt)

Yeah, but they're only tough up until you devise a strategy for beating them. Lucca's Mega Bomb + Taban Vest + Red Mail + Red Vest equipped on characters makes it easy, and you get healed almost every time they hit you with their fire magic. Plus, if you time it right, you can get in a few regular hits, like Crono's Confuse, right before using the fire magic, so that the Twins don't revert to bashing you with 1/2 HP attacks and such.
By the way, beating Lavos at the Ocean Palace earns the best ending in the game, if you ever think about doing that, theclaw. The other way to get the same ending is to use the telepod to beat him in New Game+.

Very minor clarification: You'd have to beat him at the very beginning of a New Game+ with the telepod, before you even go back to AD 600.

The Golem Twins are rather nasty. On the plus side, though, later on you face the Golem Boss and it's a pushover.

You know, I never quite understood all the trouble with the Golem Twins. Of course, my strategy essentially consisted of hitting them with Luminare then Flare, then Laser Spin so they did the pissweak Laser Counter. XD
