Well, I don't really know how to word that title, so I'll go into detail:
I need to get a few opinions about what a good starter RPG would be to give or have someone play to get into the genre a little bit more. Keep in mind these would be people that have not played them or they don't get the point of just aimlessly pressing a button many times over to kill hoards of enemies (which most are). I also don't need to hear opinions of 'well he should play this cuz it's my favorite game'. Uh uh. I need something that would appeal to the GENERAL PUBLIC of those that don't play it...not you. Something basic but good and long-lasting. The best I've got off the top of my head would be Chrono Trigger and that's really a guess, mostly for the curve and the fact that the game itself was really fun to play for someone who wasn't used to RPGs back a decade ago and I actually picked it up. This was one of those that did a good job of pushing the basics past me and thus hooking me into more RPGs nowadays. Top influencer? Maybe not...but I think it would appeal more than most FF titles anymore. Anyways, I'm going on, but I'm wondering if there's a better idea than the one I just mentioned. Any ideas with some detail behind why? |

What about Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga?
It was a funny and it had a nice curve. Also your not just hitting A A A all the way through the battles you have actively dodge/attack. It was one of the few RPG's that I did not feel the need to cheat at any time. |

I'm actually with Dark Data on this. I loved that game. Although, it really depends on the person. I got my friend into RPGs via Persona, but I doubt that that will help too much.

The first one I played was Dragon Warrior when it was new ... but most of it is just about killing enemies over and over to level up and gain gold, so I wouldn't recommend it now ... although the later ones in the series might be good
But my cousin started with Mario RPG and that got him into RPG's pretty well ... it's not too short or complicated, it plays like a platformer (but isometric 3D), there's a little more than just button mashing in battles (timed hits and dodging), and it's Mario (which everyone should know about) Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga (or the second one, Partners in Time) are good too, and still fairly recent ... Any of the Mario RPG games would be good. Personally I'd reccommend Paper Mario TTYD.

I found that Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time was very good too. It had an even difficulty curve and finished up challenging by the near-end.

I would suggest Live A Live. It's fun, It's not too hard to figure out, and it doesn't require the massive and repetitive stockpiling of potions which is stadard in most other RPGs.

I'd say start with Secret of Mana or a game like that. It's got some of the familiarity of traditional action games while including great RPG aspects. I haven't played it in a while so I can't remember exactly how difficult the learning curve is but I know that I really enjoyed it.

I'd have to further recommend Chrono Trigger, or even Chrono Cross. Both are A+ games that weren't too complicated, confusing, and they were weren't too long (maybe a very long RPG would scare someone off? Both were only about 20-30 hours for me).
I really can't say much more than what Hiryuu already said. To me, some RPG's have aged and just aren't as fun anymore. But the Chrono games I could easily pickup again and have a blast with. Very unique games, incredible settings, phenomenal soundtracks, and they're just simple and fun. I'd say Super Mario RPG [SNES] would be a good start too. It is in fact, the RPG that got me hooked on the genre. |

Super Mario RPG is a good start, and is the first RPG I've ever played. It's also very easy to get into.. you don't even need to read the manual if it's your first time playing because the game teaches you as you go along:
- How to use items. - How to get timed hits, and to lessen physical damage from enemy attacks. - How to equip items. You only get this tutorial in the Mushroom Kingdom if you don't immediately equip the Hammer after getting it. - How to switch characters. Those are most of the "Toad" tutorials, but there are a few more. One thing that I didn't know about for a long time was a hidden feature of Mario's "Jump" ability. Each time you use it, it gets more powerful.. up to a maximum of 255 uses, I think. If you take the time to power this up very early in the game, it makes the early bosses much easier. This only works for "Jump", not "Super Jump" or "Ultra Jump". |

Yeah, I'll echo the Mario RPG suggestions.
Actually, wasn't Final Fantasy Mystic Quest designed for just such a non-RPG playing audience? Despite what elitist jackasses claim about the game (O NOES it r not REUL FF!!1!1 Right, and it wasn't supposed to be), I'd give that a try. |

Seconding (thirding, whatever) the Mario RPGs and Chrono Trigger. Early Final Fantasy games (pre-6) and most Dragon Quest/Warrior games (not the first one - as Milly said, it's pretty much pure grinding and little else) are good as well, just try to stay away from the more recent hold-a-button-a-thons, those will just leave the wrong impression (and don't say "easy is good", everyone did well on RPGs with an existing challenge level before FF7 came along). Same with Mystic Quest, really - it's too easy and simplistic to entertain in the same way as the good RPGs out there.

I'm shocked and appalled at the lack of suggestions for Earthbound. Not only is it easy to pick up and play, but it also has a good sense of humor and a unique setting (compared to Final Fantasy and Chrono games).
And if the person played Smash Bros. Melee, it'll show them where a few of the references came from. |

I'd go with Chrono Trigger. You need to start off with a strong, unique game - and it's easily accessible to boot.
If we were going to go with Dragon Warrior... erm... probably IV. At least you have the chapters instead of the total exploration. |

Might as well go with the GBA version in that case, no?
You could always toss Pokemon out there as well but that might get laughed down. |
