It seems that the bosses in the normal mario game just dont live up to the difficulty most games present. Its an impossible level followed by a quick battle with some koopa. This is no more obvious than with Bowser. His level takes an hour to beat but he cant even kill you if you have any skill in the game what so ever. So my question is... How could we make the bosses harder? I was thinking more hits to kill them, but Iggy can't be hurt, only pushed into lava. I guess someone could put some badguys in the level with him, like boos or spitfire pirhanas... But that requires some serious work, just to hack the level at all. Any ideas?
Oh yeah and about Iggy... Is there any way I can use that platform that tips into the lava in other levels? How about Iggy himself? Can I use him as a normal enemy? One more thing. Can you refight bosses? I was gonna make it mega-man style, fight all the bosses again before the last guy, but I haven't the slightest idea how to do that without the levels ending once you beat them. |

1. In a lot of hacks, people throw in a bullet bill generator, or something like that. There's also an Iggy platform editor.
2. 3. Ending sequences don't happen after you beat a boss. They come after you beat the level, so yes, you can refight the bosses. (but I find that irritating) Edit: Actually, I think Iggy's platform is attached to the boss fight, so no, you cant. (edited by SecretGlitch on 12-31-06 12:26 AM) |

HyperHacker Star Mario Finally being paid to code in VB! If only I still enjoyed that. <_< Wii #7182 6487 4198 1828 Since: 11-18-05 From: Canada, w00t! My computer's specs, if anyone gives a damn. STOP TRUNCATING THIS >8^( Last post: 6431 days Last view: 6431 days |

Nope, those are done in Mode7. The rest of the game simply wouldn't work in Mode7.
What's with all the hard hacks anyway? Does nobody besides me tire of playing hacks that require a load of save states to beat? I mean yeah, SMW's bosses suck, but let's not go crazy. (edited by Alice on 12-31-06 01:41 AM) |

I do believe there is a fine line between challenge and Ub3r Sux0rz.
But in response to BTG, maybe you can do a sprite request to make a harder boss in Sprite Tool. |

It is obvious that you can alter the Big Boo Boss' room (Check Alastor's Mario Returns, World 8, Big Boo's Palace) He throws a bunch of reflecting Boo streams, boos and eeries into the boss battle, and they worked really good. (Maybe grammar mistake)
To the Bowser's Battle... You can try Custom Sprite, but don't think of altering the orginal Boss Battle, for they are of no hope to be made better. Some people put a bullet bill shooter or to modify the Boss Battle platform, or even Bowser's HP, but they may not improve the game's difficulty. |

I think the Bowser battle could be vastly improved if it was just sped up. You have huge stretches of time in the first and second waves where he just flies back and forth not doing anything and you have to hold the fast forward key. If he was throwing out Mechakoopas and Bowling Balls every few seconds the player would have to keep moving and there might be some semblance of challenge.

Nifty tool by smallhacker
That might help you with the HP of the bosses and other monsters, just dont over do it. As SWR said:"I do believe there is a fine line between challenge and Ub3r Sux0rz" |

Oh, right, and the Lemmy & Wendy can be harder: Use Layer 2 scroll and then put something like lava and ... whatever you like it to be. I've tried it and it worked a little better

Originally posted by 3.14159265358979323846 Actually, since Lemmy and Wendy can be used in a normal level, their boss battles can really be as hard as you want. I've seen hacks (e.g. Rob-omb's Quest) that just stick them in an ordinary (yet difficult) room as the boss. |

Create new sprites =(
Without high quality programming skills, this game's going to stay as basic as it already is when it comes to making new monsters, power ups, etc. In my opinion, hacking these games is just to have some fun making mostly new levels and gfx without having to do any work to create the basic functionality of them. And also you can get experience working with Assembly, which I got out of it, but it takes a lot of work to get that far. That's basically the only part that's useful, is just learning programming concepts from it, and a few other things that go along with it. Originally posted by Atma Yeah, ASM is hard to learn and is not fun at all, but without ASM, can you make amazing hack like PITMK or SRP2? Just like your schooling, it is boring, tedious... You can find a lot adjectives to decribe it, however, it is VERY important. [/orange] |

Originally posted by 3.14159265358979323846Which really needs me to my next point: You say ASM is hard to learn and no fun at all, but that just suggests to me that you haven't really tried. There's a lot of crazy stuff you can do modifying assembly code. (Right now I'm working on making AI for robotic cars in assembly, though this is neither here nor there, and is definiely not the same flavor as is used in SMW.) The problem most people have is that they are intimidated, but if you just jump in there and have any amount of knowledge of code they can do fine... It's not as hard as it's seems and it can be a lot of fun. If it wasn't fun, none of us would do it, because really what ROM hacking is for most of us is a hobby and thus we don't get paid for it. Exactly, it's hard work but a lot of fun. Now, because Console games take so long to modify, I personally would just prefere creating my own mario game, or w/e game using C++ (since that is what I know how to do the most with, and is a nice language too).
If you don't like to spend time programming, then making advanced modifications to games like these isn't something for you. In that case, you'd better find a team to work on a project with someone that does program. Now, just because programming may seem boring at first, doesn't mean it'll always feel like that. I thought it seemed pretty boring before doing it myself, but once I actually learned how to do it, and understood how things work and got to do some interesting things with it, it became really fun. Yes, I agree with this whole lack of difficulty in bosses. I'm sick of seeing hacks where there is a ridiculously hard castle (usually when it's a barely changed Castle, just a crapload of enemies), and then seeing a boss where you just stomp on them 3 times.
I suppose it's better than if you COULD edit them. |
