Something Chief and I have been wondering... how do you do that crazy backwards jump that kills the clipper and stuff? It's used a lot in the 16 Star Completion speedrun...

Then hold down on the control stick as you keep jumping.
With good timing, you start doing it backwards. |

Works best (only?) on stairs.

I always have done it with ease. I believe it only works on stairs however...
It's fun to try in M64DS, but it just wont work |

Stairs, and if you're really good, on some moving platforms. I've generally only seen it done on moving platforms in tool-assisted runs.

For a brief moment, you clip the next set of stairs up and can long jump, gaining a bit of momentum each time. Since there are so many stairs, after a few repetitions you go fast enough to appear on the other side of whatever over the course of a single frame; thus, no collision detection occurs, and you go straight through.

This video is a 16-star run of SM64. The backwards jumping upstairs happens at about 17'40".

I was under the impression that it was impossible to pull off unless you did a tool-assisted run. I tried it out a few days ago and ended up inside the clock the first time I pulled it off.

I've also seen a video where the backwards jump thing is used to get inside the aquarium by the entrance to Jolly Roger Bay. I could never pull it off on flat ground OR stairs though.

Originally posted by Kamek I have done this many times on my N64. It's hard to do, because you have to be fast at pressing A, but it's doable by humans. |

I tried doing a speed run after seeing the 16 star run. Did it at a friends house since I haven't had a N64 in ages. Beat it in 26 minutes. Woo.

Isn't this "technique"/"move" commonly known as Backwards Long Jump (or BLJ for short) or something?

I'm pretty sure that's the move you use to climb up stairs, not the climbing itself.

Xk, uh.
What. What does that have to do with anything. Also, yes it is commonly known as that. |

As in, BLJ is just the backwards jump.
I always called the rapid movement gained from repeatedly using it on stairs the "HOLYSHITMYASSISONFIRE" trick, but... |

That's an awesome speed run, I must say. I used to love SM64 and liked to fool around with glitches for it, but that's one I hadn't seen before. Though the only glitches I could do with any sort of reliability were the one where you fall through the castle wall and the one where you "clone" your hat using the warps after it falls off.

If you have 2 hours to spare, watch the 120-star run. It's awesome. |
