For the past few 1. My old mouse wasn’t working too well because of dust that got caught up in it, so instead of unscrewing and fixing it, I just bought a new one; a wireless laser mouse [Microsoft Wireless Optical Mouse (2.0)]. However, sometimes the mouse seems to randomly get a poor signal (usually in the morning)… any ideas on how I can find out why? 2. Also, sometimes when I move the mouse to get the screen saver off, a random window will try closing (it will sometimes even bring up the shut-down screen). This only happens with the new mouse. 3. The computers that I’ve owned always seem to have some problem or another with sleep/stand-by mode. This time, it won’t go into stand-by mode, and when I put it in it, it doesn’t stay in it (I got it to stay in stand-by mode all last night when I disconnected the internet, though). 4. Since this computer was new, the Control Panel liked to randomly close. No idea why. 5. On this computer the small icon (16x16) for the Super Mario World lever editor “Lunar Magic” shows up as a shrunken version of the normal icon (32x32). From screen-shots people have posted of the program, I know that several people have the same problem, on various versions of windows. Why is this? 6. Sometimes notification icons don’t load at start-up, or will disappear later (the programs still load, though). 7. When I plug-in a flash drive or external hard drive (that my computer counts as a “Hard Disk Drive”), my computer automatically thinks it’s a picture folder, and shows that little picture of a photograph in the corner. This is undesirable. 8. My old computer’s hard drive messed-up (*tick tick tick*) and I took the floppy and CD-RW drives out and put them in my new computer, but the computer keeps trying to read from a disk in the CD drive (when there’s no disk in it), causing it to freeze from anywhere between a split-second to at least a minute. 9. Why won’t my programs let me select non-true type fonts, like Courier? 10. The icon that .htm files use is the normal Internet Explorer icon, rather than the “‘e’ on the sheet of paper” icon, and I can’t fix it. Okay, that’s all I could think of for now. I might add more questions to this thread as I come up with them. |

I think you are better of reinstalling Windows XP instead of trying to address each and every problem... (note, you can reinstall the OS w/o formatting your HD)
but anyways, 1. try new batteries? 2. OS reinstall 3. there is some software you install that messes it up. When i install the printing software of my printer, power saving modes fail to work 4. no idea 5. probably related to the software you have running on the computer interacting in such a fashion that causes that to happen. microsoft can't fix it because it is insanely complex to solve... but serious, it is a very hard bug to isolate and so many factors could cause it... so it is something you probably will need to live with 6. assuming notification icons mean system tray icons (icons that appear next to your clock), either they are hidden. If not, OS reinstall 7. never had that happen to me. You could try to fix it by reassigning drive letters via Disk Management in Computer Management tool in Administrative Tools (this assumes you have WinXP Professional -- i'm not sure if it WinXP Home has Admin Tools) 8. i recall this happening with anti-virus software 9. Why use Courier when Courier New works? What advantage does the non-TrueType Courier gives you that TrueType doesn't? But anyways, probably because the non-TrueType Courier font isn't installed? 10. Windows Explorer-->Tools-->Folder Options-->File Types-->Click HTM File-->Advanced Button in "File Types" Tab-->Change Icon |

7. right-click the drive in My Computer, select properties, click the autoplay tab, set everything to "take no action". | |||

Originally posted by neotransotakuI have [the batteries that it came with died a long time ago, but I didn’t have any batteries to replace them with at the time, so I fixed the old mouse until I got more batteries (I had to take all the gears out and everything, I was almost surprised it worked after that)]. Originally posted by neotransotakuI don’t know if that’ll help, the problem didn’t exist until I installed the new mouse, and I’d hate to reinstall Windows just to find out that the problem is with the mouse. Originally posted by neotransotakuWell, I was wondering if maybe spyware could be causing it, since it stayed in sleep mode when it was cut off from the internet, but the problem has persisted after more than one scan with Ad-Aware. Originally posted by neotransotakuBecause I had to go through the Control Panel several times to reach the Administrative Tools, I found out a little more about it. See, Windows Explorer closes, which means all folder windows close, and it’ll still happen even if I already closed the Control Panel a few minutes earlier. Originally posted by neotransotaku Originally posted by neotransotakuI thought that was called the “Notification Area” in Windows XP, hence “notification icons.” And they’re not hidden. Originally posted by neotransotakuThat worked. Originally posted by neotransotakuIs there anything I can do about it? Originally posted by neotransotakuI thought the font wasn’t installed at first, but then when I looked in the Font folder it was there. There may not be much reason to use Courier, but it’s not just Courier; any font with the extension “.fon” doesn’t show up. It looks like only word processors have this problem though…. Originally posted by neotransotakuThat doesn’t work. Originally posted by KailieannThat doesn’t work ether. |
