Saying that drawing something like that doesn't require much skill or effort, mixing up your opinion and an actual fact, and an overall condescending attitude towards Taryn... is bad.

Yeah, dude. She's said multiple times that she has a lot on her shoulders, and being that condescenting isn't really going to help her situation or self esteem much. Try being a bit more tactful next time.

Frankly, you've been pretty mean.
Without explicitly saying it, you've told me that I'm untalented, unskilled, that everything I've ever drawn is ugly, and that I should quit drawing. Your basis for this seems to be simply that you don't like the style that I choose to draw in. You have repeatedly bashed my drawing style, but not given a single decent technical critique, or pointer on how to improve (other than to tell me I should quit). If you were to treat anybody else in Modern Art this way, I would be requesting that you be banned from Modern Art. It is not acceptable to debase and insult Modern Artists simply because you do not like the style they draw in. For most Modern Artists (myself included) this is a hobby, and something that they are working to improve on in their spare time -- I would like to ask you in future that if you wish to comment negatively on people's artwork, that you do so in such a way that will be helpful to them, or that you do not post at all. Frankly, I'm surprised at your manners, and have been for pretty much all of this thread. |

All of you. Stop putting words into my mouth.
Danielle, I corrected myself on your first point, I'm not sure what you're referring to on your second, and the third is... Yeah, I can't really defend myself on that point. Taryn, I never stated ANYTHING related to your talent (or skill, for that matter), and the only thing related to you quitting was clearly put sarcastically. Yes, I find this piece to be ugly, but that's not true of all of your work. I don't care if it's a hobby. You put it up in an open forum, I say I don't like the style and that I think it's ugly. Plenty of people blindly say it's good, so why the hell are you all ganging up on me, when I at least provided reasons for why I *don't* like it? Granted, the reasons weren't the best ever, but still. Is there some rule somewhere that says if you find something ugly, you can't say so unless you have a damned art major and can specifically say exactly what is wrong with it? Because I don't have that, and I find it ugly. I don't care if that's not helping, neither are the idiiots who just blindly said it's pretty, but I don't see you yelling at them. And besides; even if it was sarcasm, just saying "I'm sorry; it was sarcastic" doesn't make everything flowers and sunshine again. Clocky, shut up. The first thing is an example of how I tend to view things like this; I never once said it was an accurate description of what Taryn does. As for the second, yes, I don't like the style. I'm not denying that. What the hell does THAT have to do with anything? (edited by Santa-lastor the Stylish on 12-15-05 06:00 PM) |

Okay, this needs to end. Please, Alastor, keep in mind that if you want to tell someone their art is ugly, be able to back it up. Keep in mind that being rude isn't going to get you anywhere, only look like a jerk. If you don't like the style, and that's the best you've got, then just avoid the threads she makes regarding a new piece she made. It's easy, and it will do us all a favor. Clockworkz, don't flame. Jesus christ. |

But I don't have the KNOWLEDGE to back it up. I was just trying to add my opinion, like everyone else did, and then because I phrased it in a rude way everyone jumped on me, but then after that, well, I have no idea why the hell this is still going on. It was stupid then and it's even stupider now. But, I am NOT just going to drop it, because I KNOW that I am right about this. I can accept that the majority of the people here disagree with me, but I cannot stand that everyone is singling me out about something so trivial.
Anyway, I don't know what you're talking about when you imply I do this for all of her stuff. I posted an entirely different comment in the other thread of hers that I've posted in, and she seemed to AGREE with it, too. (edited by Santa-lastor the Stylish on 12-15-05 06:15 PM) |

You're being singled out because of how poorly you handled the way you felt about her art. It was rude, and nobody likes rude.
Nobody is saying you're wrong, because it's your opinion. But it's nothing more than that, don't forget. And just as a note to Clockworkz: I can't reply to your PM because of your name. (edited by Danielle on 12-15-05 06:19 PM) |

As far as I'm concerned, there is simply no place for rudeness here.
Most artists put a lot of time and effort into their work (I put a month of a half into shading that piece). I think then that regardless of whether you like the style of that artwork, it deserves to be commented on at a serious level. I don't think you would appreciate it if something you put a lot of time and effort into was as rudely dismissed. You say you don't have the "knowledge" to back up what you're saying. I don't think you need special knowledge to critique a piece of artwork. You simply look at the picture and find things you think look good (you might think the shading on the hair is good or something, I don't know) and things you think look bad, wrong, or a touch off (you might, for example, think the arms are too thick). This does not require special knowledge, an art degree, or whatever. Just simple analytical skills. You then write a response without being rude. You can say politely that you don't like the artistic style, without using words like "ugly" or insinuating that it required "no skill". I'm just saying that I'd appreciate it if in future you responded to people's artwork in a more tactful manner. This doesn't apply simply to my artwork, but all art in Modern Art, be it musical, written, photoshopped, sprite comic, or drawn (or whatever). (edited by Tarale on 12-15-05 06:32 PM) |

Hey, back off on the Kyoujibashing, wouldya? The only time you jump down his throat about his harshly-worded criticisms is when you disagree with them. I'll agree with you all on one point, one of the comments was worded exceptionally callously (even for him), and we all know which one that is, but is that any reason to run this whole fucking thread off-topic?
Seriously, I recommend this thread be closed and she post a new one. An argument that size is too much of an interruption. But since I'm just the GenGaming mod, I don't think my word holds much weight here. There are flaws in this drawing, of course. And as someone (probably Kyouji) mentioned, the style and the character don't really go together. Something about the hair seems a bit off, too, but I can't quite pinpoint the problem. In the original drawing, the hair just doesn't seem right at all... doesn't even look like it's shaded right. For example, why would a red jacket be that much darker than brown hair? The only coloration in the hair si the solid black edges, everything else in it is white. Not being much of an artist myself (and dealing with pencils and pixels when I do anything at all), I don't know if that's a pen limitation or something you could've actually fixed. Edit: Tarale posted before I finished, and to reply to her comments, I think that - in addition to him perhaps needing to work on tact - people here need to work on not reacting so much to tactless comments. Not everyone's going to be nice, even if their criticisms are constructive. Don't let it offend you so much unless it becomes outright flaming. (edited by Tamarin Calanis on 12-15-05 06:34 PM) |

Agree on the closure part. Give this a new topic for people to actually comment and critique in, not argue.
Try looking at this drawing in the mirror before you people critique. Youll be amazed at how out of proportion this really is. Yes Tarale, some... parts... on the chest... Are a little bigger than normal... And the forehead |

There's no need to scrap this thread and make a new one.
If you wish to COMMENT on Taryn's drawing/offer constructive criticism/etc., then feel free to post here. No more arguing. Fin. |

Originally posted by Tarale I got quite upset by reading that too but I didn´t want to get into yet another fight. I know that Taryn has a lot on her shoulders so I´d never say that she draws bad even if I happened to think so. Self esteem is very important and those words can only make it worse. I won´t argue more as I´ve read Colin's reply. So end of discussion. I´ve already said that I think that the drawing is great, though. |
