| Hi all, I have a Dell Insprion 8600 and I've had a lot of problems with it recently, so I decided to install Linux on my laptop. I started to install Fedora Core 2 and after I set up my partitions but before it begins, or as it started, to format the drive it gave me an error...
"The installer has shut down unexpectedly." Then just shutdown and rebooted. Now my Windows Xp install CD won't boot and Linux keeps giving me the an error message, that I don't have off hand  . So I ran the Drive Fitness Test on the HDD, and got this...
"Failure Code: 0x72 - Defective Device. S.M.A.R.T. Failure." I have never seen this code; but it sounds DEAD. I guess I'm just hoping that the HDD isn't dead, but I realize it probley is. Just wondering if anybody has any ideas if it can be fixed. P.S. *SCREW DELL* because this computer has given me nothing but trouble. |

| Sounds dead alright. You might try sticking it in the freezer overnight (in a sealed plastic bag to keep dry). Sometimes thi helps get them working again long enough to copy the data to a working drive. | |||

| Try turning S.M.A.R.T. off and backing up the data. My dad has a drive that SMART says is bad... it apparently was referring to the SMART circuit itself. BTW, SMART shoudl be in the BIOS settings. | |||

Originally posted by HyperHacker Just to add to that, the procedure we use at my work is basically to wrap the HDD in one of those cleaning cloths with holes in it, then put it in the sealed zip lock bag, then in the freezer. The cloth seems to help absorb any icky freezer moisture (even though the bag is sealed, it just makes extra sure) |
