Anyone have any idea what a Simple Start Wi-Fi menu on the DS would DO?
It's a hidden menu that has been found in the DS WiFi setup menu. It's quite obscure to access. Check out a video and explanation here: http://www.n-europe.com/news.php?nid=9550 Any theories? Edit: The title should read "start" but I typed too fast (edited by Robin on 09-11-06 08:45 AM) |

I don't have a NDS, and I don't plan on getting one, but that video was awesome!
Spoiler:
It was amazing when the music went in and I didn't know what was going to happen! Remember Nintendo said Mew couldn't be caught on Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow and it could be caught, never trust Nintendo! |

Mew being caught in R/B/Y was an exploitation of the same programming error (more specifically, tileset design error) that allowed Missingno. to be encountered.
Anyway it looks like this may have been a beta menu that they removed, but rather than actually removing it, they just moved the button to position 0,0 and made it 1x1 (possibly unable to make it 0x0). Notice the glitched graphics when you touch it. |

Originally posted by HyperHacker I thought it was a quirk in the battle routines dealing with trainers, since the Missingno. glitch couldn't create a Mew without your name featuring characters not available ingame. On-topic... That looks interesting. Does sound like a Wii feature, though, considering I don't think I've heard anything about "Simple Start" in upcoming wireless architectures. |

It could possibly just be some proprietary feature like that AOSS thing of some certain routers. (poosibly Japanese only?) They probably couldn't get the feature to work right or on time or something so they just scrapped it but didn't remove it all the way. Also, i trie it on my DS lite and I saw no corrupted graphics. About the damaging your DS thing, I kinda doubt it. Nintendo tends to be pretty hush-hush about bugs and stuff probably because, well, who wants to here their software is buggy?
It could possibly be a Wii feature, though. Wii could have a DS Download Play thing that'll flash your DS firmware to unlock it or something. |

Hmmm... I just did it on mine... didnt connect to anything... like always...
It actually took me a while to get the right poke to activate it... No corrupted gfx when I went and did it, so it must have either had some kind of functionality, or... might HAVE some functionality with the Wii... though nintendo never hid new features like this before... |

When you touch the secret button you can see some glitched graphics flash really quick in the corner.
Originally posted by SkreenameOriginally posted by HyperHacker Ah, right, you had to exploit two glitches to get Mew. The Missingno. bug and a bug in the "trainer walks to player" routine. Either way it's not intended behaviour. (Or am I thinking of some other glitch? I can't recall just how that glitch goes. ) (edited by HyperHacker on 09-11-06 06:00 PM) |

Works for me, but I have only gotten it twice. I want to inspect that image that comes up in the cornor some more...
Looks like it simply was going to be for Nintendo hosted wi-fi connections made specifically for Nintendo Wi-Fi and no other connections to outside servers. And yea, 1x1, 0x0y seems very reasonable. Surprised they wouldn't just delete it. Musta forgot about it. |

It's a left out feature from the japanse software
And remember that teh wifi connection thing seems to be part of the software on the game and not part of the firmware, even if it gives that illusion. It does save data on the firmware apparently though. Since it's trying to connect to a router that only exists in Japan I think it's actually safe to try it. |

Hmmm...But what if we tried it with a NEC router? Would it work? Would it go crazy? I would bet it works...

Well, as said before, the WiFi menu is actually in the individual games, but the settings are saved to the firmware. It shouldn't matter if you try it on a Lite.

Originally posted by HyperHacker Well, then there must be two ways of getting Mew, one including having not allowed chars in your name and missigno, and the other just involving the routine you are reffering (But not Missigno). I just figured out Nintendo didn't actually know it was possible, and they supposed it wasn't, so they told everybody it was impossible. So I take back my words "Never trust Nintendo", sorry. Also, Ailure's post just killed the mystery =( (edited by Uly on 09-11-06 10:54 PM) |

Well yes, if you could somehow put those characters in your name, you could do it that way. You'd have to hack the game to do it anyway though.
IIRC the end result is the same: the game uses the wild Pokémon data as temporary storage, you go to the island, it has no wild Pokémon data and thus uses the random junk that was stored there before, and you find glitches. All really boils down to a screwup when designing the tileset (the edge-of-water tile should have been set to water Pokémon, not grass Pokémon), and in the Mew case, another screwup when coding the trainer walk routine (forgot to disable Start). Getting back on topic, the fact that this menu is used in the Japanese versions explains why they only hid the button rather than removing the whole thing. It's a lot easier to change the interface a bit and just stick the button in some out of the way spot where it's not likely to be found (they had to edit the interface anyway to translate it) than to edit the code for a specific region. The code is probably the same for all versions, just with different resources. (edited by HyperHacker on 09-12-06 04:40 AM) |

Originally posted by HyperHacker I'm 100% sure they're not glitched graphics. I accessed it about 30 times in a row (I have my DS calibrated so that it reads the touches higher upleft than they really are, making it rediculously easy -- I put my stylus in the topleft corner and poke)... It's just the selection corner graphics, except they're all bunched up on 0,0. (the little [] things) But yeah, not at all glitched. |

Let me clear up a little known fact. The hidden Mew might be in Japanese versions (I haven't tried it), but surfing for Missingno does not work. No Pokémon appear on either coast. Ever. Owning an actual Green cart, I'm able to verify this.
Is the strange menu option in Mario Kart? None of my other DS games support online Wi-Fi. |
