"Ah man!" I shouted "They're not serving any Sprite on this flight?" I looked in shock at the flight attendant who had just told me that, but then thanked her and was on my way.

Hi, I'm Barbarella Sanchez, and I just finished a 3-year term in prison. Above is the start of a story of one day on an airplane, and how my life got wrecked for 3 years. I shall regale you with the rest.

As I approached the checkpoint, I started thinking. I knew that I wasn't allowed to carry liquids on board the plane, because of the new regulation, but I needed to have some Sprite while on the plane. I figured, I'm not trying to blow up the plane or anything, so if I just put it in a plastic bag and not get searched, then I would be fine. If I was found with it, I could just tell them that it was Sprite and all would be forgiven.

I went into the shop just before it and bought a nice 20-ounce bottle of Sprite, and put it in my plastic bag. As I didn't get searched, and as my plastic bag didn't go through the X-ray machine, I had gotten in. Great, now I got onto the flight.

On the flight, when I got my plastic cup, I went into the lavatory with my bottle and poured the sprite into it, and enjoyed it. Absentmindedly, I returned the sprite bottle to the bag instead of tossing it in the trash. I returned to my seat.

The remainder of the flight was uneventful, but as we landed I decided to toss the plastic bag. I threw it at the trash can, but missed, and the bottle rolled out. A TSA guy saw me, and shouted "Hey! Alert alert! Contraband in the terminal!" He then tackled me and put handcuffs on me. Other agents came and took the bottle.

"So! Who are you working for! Huh?" the interrogator demanded. "Do you think this is some kind of joke?"

"Well, I just wanted to drink some Sprite on the plane," I replied. "I wasn't hurting anybody."

"Well, apparently you don't take the thread of terrorism seriously enough. You were endangering lives. We have proof that you snuck that bottle in through the gate security and you will be charged accordingly."

"What? Why? I didn't hurt anybody."

"Unremorseful. We need to teach you a lesson."

And taught me a lesson, they did. For I was convicted of bringing contraband onto the plane and sentenced to 3 years imprisonment. The reason for the harsh punishment, as the judge stated, was my "unrepentent and stubborn attitude and trying to interfere with the TSA's efforts to stop terrorism."

Well, now that I'm out of jail, what do I do now?

I'm confused, is this a hypothetical situation, or has it actually happened? If it is real, did it actually happen to the poster, or is it being posted on behalf of someone else?

It sounds like something that actually could happen, based on my experiences with the legal system. Sometimes they will come up with any excuse to slam you ("look she is unrepentant about her love of Sprite, proof she is pure evil and a menace to society!").

It's a story I wrote. It's a response to a person who would say, "I'm helping to fight terrorism by not bringing my Sprite onto the plane." I had been reading comments like that over and over again and I felt annoyed. I was thinking, Was it really that much of a threat if the person brought a Sprite onboard for their personal enjoyment, drank it, tossed it, and went their merry way? Would the TSA be too overzealous by arresting people who bring harmless contraband aboard? Even, could there be a new system?

Also, the story implies that it's not too difficult to bring contraband aboard....

There needs to be some sort of punishment, but in proportion to the severity of the crime. Moderate crimes bring moderate punishments.

Is this based on a true story? 3 years is an extremely long time. I'm thinking a fine, at the worst maybe some community service.

The amount of time did'nt shock me at all, i've seen people get more time than that over equally minor things. In some states they hand out time like it's nothing. They dont care, they are'nt the ones who have to do the time.

VERY simple solution. If you want to bring a drink onto the plane, then you have to take a sip of it in front of a security guard and swallow to prove it's a drink and not something lethal. Either that or they can set up a kiosk in the waiting area where you can buy drinks with special markings/etc that can be taken on board.

Depending on how much of a bad motherfucker you are, you may very well be able to take a sip of something explosive and not flinch. Maybe it'd fuck up your health, but if you're going to be blowing up a plane you're on, it shouldn't really matter much to you.

It'd be easier just to prohibit bringing fluids onboard alltogether and then sell pre-approved cans of stuff onboard.

If it was poisonous, odds are you'd be feeling it before you got onto the plane. And if someone hesitates just for a few seconds, then that might be grounds to test the drink.

You could go to the bathroom and purge afterwards, though.

But I think this little sub-argument is getting too detached from reality. I'm sure the smell would give it away or something.

Why would someone bring poison on a plane? I can sip a little gasoline without dying.

This story is a bit unrealistic. NO ONE is getting locked up for drinking a sprite on a plane, even if they snuck it on.

I think that the REAL threat these days is snakes. If snakes get on a plane there is no telling how much motherfuckin' may occur.

Yeah, I completely agree with this. Nobody is going to be locked up for something that results in no harm.

Oh thank GOD, I thought I was the only one who thought this when I read the thread title.

You know, I think everyone is capable of going a few hours without Sprite. If you're so self-centered that you're willing to circumvent security and possibly cause delays and tension (slowing down already over extended security systems) if you get caught, just so you can have the particular beverage you want, I think you deserve a pretty stiff penalty. Maybe not three years, but atleast a few months.

Now if it was Lime Coke, I could see...

It's actually used as a heart medication, in fact. But I don't think this adds much to the discussion...

I could see a fine coming the way of someone who did that, not much more. I don't consider the necessity for such regulations to be a good thing, but... Considering the gain versus the loss, I think it's probably worth it.

Of course, that thing about people saying that they're helping fight terrorism by not bringing Sprite onto planes sounds rather... imbecilic. Seems something along the lines of "Hey, I'm helping by not doing something that would make no difference anyway!"

Or maybe they're just saying they're not whining or complaining, hasseling and slowing down or distracting security. Maybe that's not "fighting terrorism", but its not making matters worse.

Once you've gotten off the plane it's really a moot point. Unless they thought you were taking part in a dry run, then what's the point of arresting someone who didn't do anything. It's security's fault for allowing it to get through in the first place. The TSA is inept at best. I'm really surprised there hasn't been a successful attack in five years.

Somewhat on point: http://www.cnn.com/2006/US/08/17/airport.evac.ap/index.html

As a side note, 3 years for bringing Sprite on an airplane seems totally fair to me if the security officers told you not to. Airports and airplanes aren't the places to bend the rules or to make political statements. The rules are there for a reason, they are also there to be followed.

So you're saying we should do whatever someone in an airport tells us, even if we are positive that it's harmless? "The rules are there for a reason" sure, but you have obviously missed the reason if you think it's dangerous to bring Sprite on a plane.

While I'm not advocating bringing Sprite on a plane ILLEGALLY (well, actually maybe I am, there's nothing unethical about it. I wouldn't do it, thought), three years is way too harsh a sentence.

You know who else imprisons people for bringing Sprite on a plane? Al Qaeda.
