Chef Pasquale is the best chef on TV.
Oh GEEZ I second that strongly. When I was a kid I'd always watch Chef Pasquale on TV in the morning because he was the MAN. And like I was telling ||bass last night, there are NOT only a finite amount of flavors in the world. We eat certain things because we like them, and not everyone likes the same food. Some people have huge palates, others are picky eaters, but the vast majority of people have their likes when it comes to eating. (Excluding people with eating disorders, of course.) |

The sloth and gluttony comments freak me out.
Generally I put a fair bit of effort into my cooking. I go to the Markets and buy fresh, quality ingredients, which in itself isn't me being slothful -- I walk down there, I walk around the markets looking for the right things, and walk back with heavy bags -- the shopping alone is exercise. Then I tend to take my time and be careful when I cook -- it's seldom something I just "threw together", there's effort put in, it's far from me being slothful. And then I don't even eat six ton of it either when it is cooked. I serve myself a reasonable portion and then generally freeze the rest (if it's something I can freeze of course, if it isn't it goes in the fridge), so that's hardly gluttony either. I don't eat till I'm uncomfortable, I don't even eat till I'm "full". I eat till I am satisfied. And yet I love food, so apparently this makes me slothful and gluttonous. Note that since I started putting more effort into food -- buying quality ingredients, cooking, etc, learning to love GOOD food -- I've lost 23kg (50.6lbs). So it's not like devoting time and effort to good food is BAD for you or anything The only time I overindulge seems to be when the Depression kicks up a bit, and that's actually been given a chemical explanation now -- I crave carbohydrates because they assist in seratonin production. |

Originally posted by ||bassEmeril is a bit gimmicky for me, though I feel like I can appreciate his typically more mundane dishes in contrast to the incredibly complex, terribly opaque foods found on Iron Chef and the like. (Nonetheless, the Japanese Iron Chef is possibly my favorite show on TV.) Wolfgang Puck is just downright incomprehensible, though. Good Eats is a wonderful show, but I feel like its impractical for the typical weekend warrior chef to really but its recipes into practice. Alton Brown seems to suggest that every American kitchen has a plethora of arcane devices and exotic ingredients always at the ready, when I know from personal experience that many people don't have saffron, or an electric knife, or even a food processor just lying around. |

But the whole point of Good Eats is that you don't need a lot of arcane tools. Is it probably fair to assume that a lot of people who are serious about cooking have a food processor? I'd say yes. As for the ingredients, well, are you going to make everything he does? You'd be hard-pressed to find anyone with saffron just lying around, but his approach is if you're going to make... I forget what he used it for, this would help a bit. | |||

Originally posted by drjayphdHah, alright, fair enough. My gripe might be more with his presentation than with the reality of his methods. That is to say, many homes might have a food processor handy, and just as many could have easy access to saffron or a similarly exotic spice if specific need were present, but the show's kitchen is so heavily and professionally stocked that it almost appears to be a given in the eyes of the show's host that any of his viewers will have the same tools that he has. When he tells me to "take out my handy thermometer that is stuck inside the meat while its in the oven and that has a wire that connects it to an exterior digital indicator so that I can read the temperature without opening the oven" - not in so many words, of course - I feel almost inadequate when I realize that I possess no such implement . |

Yeah, a lot of cooking shows have some exotic ingredients. On one side, it might be unlikely that their viewers have said ingredient... on another, it can sometimes encourage people to try something new
I don't have any saffron either though. The closest thing I have to an exotic spice is uh... cayenne pepper. Or maybe my bay leaves. |

I'm probably the only person 100% behind ||bass on this one. I'll take a nutrition/substinance paste eaten in about 3 minutes over a 3 course meal that I have to wait an hour for, then takes about another 20 minutes to eat.
The gluttony and sloth bit is a bit exagerrated, but it's definitely there to a point. Good tasting food is addictive, and most especially good tasting food is horrible for you. Hm, many good short times of enjoyment only to be followed by negative results (lethargy, diabetes, obesity, etc), know what that sounds like? Drugs. Especially when it comes time to change your diet, tons of excuses, lies, secret indulgence... Indulgance of taste buds is an addictive and harmful way of life. If one, just ONE company would start making genuinely healthy meals in a sort of tv-dinner or other portable meal fashion, I'd be hooked. Maybe what the astronauts have =D. |

Originally posted by Zer0wned Hey hey... a lot of good things can be very tasty The weather was delightful on the weekend, so we had a barbecue. And we ate some very tasty, and very healthy salad (with dressing optional to un-healthy it... I didn't have any dressing), fresh fruit, grainy bread, etc. The meat was grilled so it has less fat too, and I didn't eat a whole heap of meat, I ate more salad and fruit. Enjoying food doesn't always lead to negative results either. I enjoy grainy breads, it doesn't lead to a negative -- the energy you get from grainier breads lasts longer and it's full of fibre and other good stuff. I adore atlantic salmon when I get the chance to eat it, and it's one of the richest source of Omega-3 fatty acids there is, which are excellent for your heart, and also your brain But you're right that a lot of takeaway / prepackaged / portable foods aren't healthy. And a lot of what you can buy for lunches near where I work isn't either, although I've noticed a few flashy (and expensive) places popping up specialising in vegetarian, low-GI and healthy lunches. |

Originally posted by Tarale That's the big problem, if you want something that's fairly fast, and isn't murder on your heart, you're going to have to end up shelling over far too much for it. The only "fast-food" that I really eat is Subway, anyways though. Overall though, I'm a 17 year old male, so it seems that as long as I eat enough, and somewhat healthy, I'll be fine. |

If the way some people enjoy life is through either the art of preparing food or the joy of consumption, then what's the big deal? If you're going to attack leisure, pick something more monstrously ubiquitous, like pro-sports. |

I love the food network. I love food. I like ideas.
And Semi Homemade cooking with Sandra Lee is FUCKING genius. It's making nice stuff at home but totally not from scratch. She's my heroine. *edit typo* (edited by Kasdarack on 08-26-06 02:03 AM) |

Sure you can have contests with all sorts of rules, but the ultimate and simplest way to settle these things are just to put two guys into a ring and let them beat the shit out of each other. Basic and straightforeword. With that being said, soccer is never actually on TV except for the spanish channels and boxing is often PPV and costs way way way too much. |
