As for the hack at hand, a tip for the future. Ripping graphics from different games from different COMPANIES is most certainly going to mean that the graphics arent going to be consistant a majority of the time. That doesnt mean that some of these dont look good... specially your overworld... (I still dont like how mario looks though... he stands out too much.) |

I'm not very good at being objective about my own graphics. I sort of giggle with glee whenever I see someone using them and am able to offer no criticisms due to the dopey grin on my face. But yeah, there is some inconsistency here. I personally prefer seeing my sprites with more obscure rips than with Mario All-Stars stuff:
This shot stands out and doesn't look like the same game at all to me. Has anyone actually released a hack yet that utilizes an undulating water effect for underwater areas? I don't think I've ever seen this in motion, but the way I'm imagining it is awesome. Those crates are much less detailed than everything else. You might try using my Reznor fireball graphics for firebars. I like the way it looks in my hack, anyway. You'll probably want to change Piranha Plants' palettes to green if you're going to use those, or I've got a white-lipped Piranha that uses the red palette that I can give you. That is, of course, the best overworld ever, but you might want to tone down the green on that grass a bit. I'm intrigued with the life bar. Can fire flowers or capes boost it? Do you shrink when you get down to one hit? |

@icegoom: Shot 1:That SMAS level is the only one with SMAS graphics in the hack. It's just a winter remake of the nomal 1-1 level in SMB3.
Shot 2 & 3: Those levels uses HDMA, and so do some other levels. Shot 4: I could try and see how it turns out. Shot 5 & 6: IActually I like the palette like it is right now on the Piranhas, though it would be easy to change them, I'll see. Shot 7 & 8: That's what I forgot. Thanks for reminding me. Edit: The life bar will decrease Mario a life when he is hit by an enemy and it will increase by 5 when hitting a midway-bar, it'll increase by 1 when collecting one coin. Power-Ups found in levels, will be restored to Big Mario in the next level. Edit 2: Here's the new color for the main overworld. (edited by Ice Man on 08-08-06 10:53 PM) |

Off-Topic: Luisv - I really don't think you know Kyouji that well at all. He has a different way of rating things then most people. He is not putting anyone down when he comments on hacks - I used to think he did when I was a lurker. I began to realize - no, he's actually quite helpful, believe it or not. He has never once said "this sux lolerz." That's what you seem to do though. And really now, before you go putting down hacks, at least make one of your own. (Yes, I know you are not a hacker)
On-Topic: You know, I have a lot of time to spare, so I"ll do each screenshot individually: (left to right) Intro: 1: No comment. It's Nintendo 2. I like the font in SMW. However, I really don't like the colour. May I suggest darkening it a tad bit? 3. "He took place over a new world and went to a spooky place?" Doesn't make sense. Try "He has taken over a new world, and went to a spooky place" Levels: 1 - Outside: Pretty nice, however, the black door looks like it was snipped out of the tree. I'm not sure what you could do to make it blend in more - perhaps put some shading in it, or add a border? 2 - Flower Isle 1: Nice BG 3 - Flower Isle 2: Autumn now 4 - Flower Isle 3: Spooky. I notice a lack of coins so far - do you put many in your hack? 5 - Iggy's Castle: K.....something about this seems bland. May I suggest adding putting a pillar or two in for detail? 6 - Lakeside Hill 1: Is that BG from Super Mario Kart? I like it 7 - Lakeside Hill 2: <3 the sky palette 8 - Lakeside Fort: Beautiful. This is my favorite screenie so far. 9 - Lakeside Hill 3: Wow. Mario hopped into a magical rocket and flew from the ground to the clouds. 10 - Mushroom House 2: Oooooh, a shop. Looks very nice 11 - Ludwig's Castle: The FG is nice, but the BG palette kills my eyes. I would suggest completely changing the colour here. 12 - Green Fields 1: That rock is...way too 3D 13 - Forest Ruin: Looking good, however, theres another YI graphic - the lava. And it doesn't look good. I'd use the regular SMW lava here. 14 - Green Fields 2: Hmm. No comment here. 15 - Ship Wreck: Very nice. All of it. 16 - Green Fields 3: Yeah...very bland 17 - Roy's Castle: I love the FG, hate the blandness 18 - Haunted Mansion: Alright. The FG here and the BG right below it clash like hell. I would think the bottom part of the BG is actually the FG just by looking at it. 19 - Underground Ruin: Very nice. 20 - Rocky Valley 1: Valleys and canyons are my favorite kind of levels. This is the best background I have ever seen, just because of that fact 21 - Rocky Valley 2: Donut Lifts FTW 22 - Morton's Castle: The right crate looks stuck in the wall 23 - Spiky Cave 1: Hey. I haven't seen that BG in forever. Sweet. 24 - Spiky Cave 6: I really like the pipe palette here. Adds a nice, shadowy effect to the level. 25 --> 31: All of these have nice graphics, but are empty and boring 32: 1-1 Winter: I agree with Icegoom. This sticks out from the rest of the hack 33: Volcano Plat. 2: I like it all. The BG and the FG. I also like all the action too. It's extremely action packed 34: Mysterious Road: Awesome looking. Awesome. 35: Bloody Fortress: NOOOOO NOT THE TOADS 36: Volcano Plat. 4: Nice 37: Larry's Castle: The gears in the BG animate, don't they? 38: Desert Oase 1: Sweet GFX, but yeah...you need a better name. 39: Cemetary Alley 1: OMG CREEEEEPY. May I suggest throwing in a gravestone or two? 40: Aquatic Ambience: That BG looks strangely hypnotic 41: Air Ship: BG + Fog = Win Overworlds: 1: K, no doubt, this is obviously one of the best OW's out there. The water looks really great next to the OW 2: Awesome. Truly awesome 3: The new ghost house graphics look nice. The coin ship, however, is cartoony in a partially-realistic OW 4: See #2 5: This is the only one I don't like Add some pointy rocks and stuff, bit more detail 6: I SEE A FACE IN THE WATER!!! (P.S. if you add a snowman in there I'll give you $100) 7: See #2 8: This looks really nice. However, the pyramids looks like they are pasted on the sand, as opposed to sticking out. Try drawing a shadow behind them. Also, if you haven't already, you could add a secret exit leading out somewhere (the oasis maybe?) 9: Looks good. I really hope you're gonna use the right side of that OW Alright, my hands are aching. All in all, this hack has definitely changed since you released it before. The graphics look awesome, even though they aren't...consistent. Level design is really nice, but you need to add some enemies/coins - I hardly see any coins at all. Nice work. Will definitely play it when you release it |

1: D4s's intro is awesome, no doubt bout it.
2: Nothing too super here, just good graphics. 3: Again, nice graphics. But, you have some redundancy with words, and "He took place" is grammatically incorrect. You also might want to add a period to the end of the whole message. 4: These SMB2 graphics are pretty good, and I like how you used LevelNames. 5, 6 and 7:Nice use of custom sprites, I guess this'll be the first full hack to use them? 8: Not much to look at here. 9: FG palette could use a little darkening. I love the BG, and the HDMA is just wonderful. 10: More HDMA, but not a whole lot to look at in the FG. 11: I never liked this rip much, because most of the FG ends up being those pillars over and over again. 12: Yay! Kirby enemies! 13: I like the shop concept here, I'll definitely use it in-game. 14: This background probably looked good in its original game, but the palette is ugly in a Mario-style setting. 15, 17 and 19: Extreme overdosage of good graphics. I bet it's that Sutte Hakkun game I've been hearing about. 16: Nice YI and ??? graphics here, but not a lot of action. 18: Doomship... nothing special really. 20: I think the floating Roman-type faces are particularly wierd. 21: Very nice ghost graphics, they look 3-Dish. 22: That wiggler seems to remind me of the style of Metroid... 23 and 24: Very nice graphics here, but not a whole lot of action. BTW and IMO, YI has better donut lift graphics. 25: Nice job with the DKC BG, and again, the new sprite (firebar). 26 and 27: The foreground could use a tad more variety, but still, really nice graphics. 28: I like Lemmy's high-tech castle. The poor guy couldn't come to Acmlm's board otherwise. 29, 30 and 33: Nice graphics again, but a little bland and boring. 31 and 32: Nice HDMA with the water here! 34: YI, nothing much here. 35: I thinkl people are tired of SMB3 rips by now. 36: Wow... I thought I was the only person who ever knew of Joe and Mac. I always liked that game's volcano graphics. 37: Most awesome background yet! 38: Ugh... gross and sadistic, I don't like it one little bit. This shot just bites, IMO. 39: Not much to look at here, nice mountain graphics though. 40: Very background, especially when it's animated. 41: Bland desert level. 42: Bland rainy level. 43: I like your creativity here with the name of the level. The HDMA rocks. 44: Another doomship, this time a flying one... it could use some more action, though. Overworld screens: All are pretty good. Nice job with this hack! One problem you might want to fix is your heavy lack of enemy sprites, mostly in the latter parts of the game. For this reason, the beginning looks more fun. Despit this, I can't wait for it to come out! |

this looks so amazing
i just wanted to point out that i hate the colors of the word SHOP. it really stood out to me how each letter is a different shade and doesn't look good imo. but that's the only thing that didn't look amazing to me in these screens. |

Those are absolutely amazing graphics. Like I know everyone's said it, but it's true. Luckily for me I'm past the stage of my hacking career where I'll look at amazing graphics and drool over them, but there are a few there I would want, no doubt about it. I'm really going to have to learn ripping - obviously it's no fair to wait for other people to make them. "Green Fields 2" has a really nice BG, and I love the tilesets in "Underground Ruin", "Rocky Valley 1", the background in "Morton's Castle", and the tilesets in the underwater levels. Also, I liked the SMB3 graphics in "Lakeside Hills 2". The overworld's nice...I dunno, something about it seems a tad sketchy. The water just doesn't seem to blend into the other areas or something, and the texture of it...eh. I dunno. It's not bad, it's just weird in a bad way...(isn't being that much help...) |

Well, I finally managed to get a FG for the Aquatic Ambience level. Took me 3-4 hours to actually get it (because those GFX are from Area 6 in Kirby & The Amazing Mirror)..
Anyway, I also changed that firebar to the reznor's fireball graphics. Some other things like darkening the title screen's font or changing the palette of Ludwig's Castle's background have been fixed, but those were just minor changes, so no screens. Edit: I got rid of the SMB3 remake level and changed the GFX to the ones for the other winter/ice levels. (edited by Ice Man on 08-09-06 04:10 PM) |
