I'm probably a little behind on the bandwagon, but I just downloaded and beat Mario's Return. It was a very enjoyable hack. It kinda justifies all of the harsh criticism that Alastor dishes out honestly. The only problems I found were the same problems everyone else had. None of them seem to be his fault, so he made a damn good hack. The final fight was awesome, very well done.
Of course, I only had 59 exits, so I have a bit more to do before I am completely done. |

This hack is boring and amateurish. A lot of graphics clash and the level design is mediocre at best. DarhkDaiz and BM3142 whatever really know how to make hacks.

No, I don't do hacks. Though him constantly putting down other people's hacks when he creates this trainwreck certainly speaks poorly of his character.

How is this a trainwreck? You can't just say "this is boring" without some sort of reasoning behind it. Explain yourself.

Just ignore him, he's from before, not worth listening to.

Whoop. You get some criticism and all you can say is "just ignore him". Pathetic.
The level design is far too linear. Many levels seem to almost repeat themselves. Also, the bugs are quite annoying. The curtain in the intro is extremely amateurish. Looks like it was slapped together in paint. The graveyard theme is dull. And the graveyard strones do NOT fit at all in the OverWorld. The backgrounds are dull, and using "eyeballs" to replace the moles simply doesn't fit well. I give this hack 6/10. (edited by luisv on 08-04-06 09:37 AM) |

Very good hack. Generally enjoyed it quite a bit. And the level design was spot on almost all the time.
The new enemy graphics were all pretty good. Though I didn't care for the hanging frame of the pidgits, they always looked like they were wearing sunglasses at first glance, and their feet didn't look right. And the big ravens walked a bit funny. The new overworld graphics are passable, though not quite perfect. I think the big problem is that the gravestones have the oposite shading pattern from just about everything else. The actual overworld design is very solid, and I have no complaints. Though the clockwise spiral path, especially where you come out of the forest, is a bit too familiar feeling. I really liked the flow of the overworld in your water area. Star road was nice. The graveyard tileset, while drawn well enough, is bland. If you added some tiles for cracks, words, and inscriptions and mixed the appearances up with them, it would've done miracles for the overall visual appeal. Blaze caverns felt very empty. The lack of a ceiling felt strange, for one. Generally too bland. The overworld screws up all the time when I play your hack, and for seemingly no reason. This doesn't happen with other hacks. I really wonder why this is. Still, the level design in most places definately rocked. And I enjoyed a lot of the puzzles. Good job. Overall, this hack is one of the best. But this message is still going to be mostly criticism because I have a feeling you'd want it that way ^_~. |

Originally posted by luisv Don't tell others thier hacks suck if you don't make one yourself. Sure Alastor is cruel at times... but thats to keep a noob-mob from happening. If he critiqes a hack and says a part of it is empty or too easy, at least he's being specific. As far as I, and everyone else who's played this knows, its a great hack. If you think its a trainwreck, go play SMW minus. And keep playing it. Until you've beaten it 200 times in a row w/out dieing. Then come back and say this hack is a trainwreck again... But I doubt you'd still be able to see by then |

Uh...I can't download it.
Using lololol, I click on the link, start downloading, and it keeps saying "Starting..." before finally ending the download at 0 bytes. |

Simple: Use Internet Explorer to download it. lololol just has those occasional quirks, so that's why I don't use it.

Or we could do the SANE thing and use Opera if we don't like lololol.

Originally posted by Alastor the Stylish Damn you, Alastor, why must you say so many things I wholeheartedly agree with? Saying "QFT" all the time is getting dumb. Originally posted by ZTaimat Okay, by that standard someone can't be a movie critic unless they've made a major motion picture. Besides, the eyeballs *are* kinda dumb and while some levels rock lots of them are just linear runs with a couple of enemies and jumps in the way. Not that luisv isn't guilty of *other* obvious dumb things in the posts above, just not those. It's only when you compare the few good things in this hack to the other hacks which have none at all that this hack shines. |

I'm having three problems with the game... (ouch)
1. I cannot find the secret exit in Ectopolis cemetary, but the normal exit was really easy to find 2. In the level right after that, I can't figure out how to hit the block to make the vine grow up to the keyhole, but the key is easy to get 3. Only in the fourth star warp can I actually access the level, in the other three, moving right or left or whatever does not work. Thanks in advance. |

This person is obsessed with shell-kicking Koopas.
This is probably just my own personal peeve, but I thought the dialogue was pretty bad. Are you a native English speaker? No offense if you aren't. Several levels were pretty creative and you did a brilliant job with the ExGFX (despite how arbitrary they seemed at some points). The difficulty seemed imbalanced throughout the game, too, but I guess the same can be said about all Mario hacks. Overall, nice work on this hack especially on the secret levels. Those were the most fun, IMO. |

Originally posted by juclyazzo It's a god damn mario game. The dialogue is destined to be bad. For your information, Alastor is one of the most eloquent users on this board, don't bust his chops for not putting effort into an insignificant aspect of the game. It's a bit of an insult to question is proficiency with the language because he didn't write pullitzer-winning script. Good day ;D |

No, he's right... Kyouji really did drop the ball with the text here. Sure, I KNOW he's capable of writing decent text, and sure, Mario doesn't demand especially cleverly written message boxes. It's just that if I didn't know better, reading through that stupid "forest" level message boxes and castle beaten text (Koopa and Boos competing for something now? What?) I'd think Kyouji couldn't understand English either. |
