Sad what happened.
But DD, for next time, set the BIOS-Password and get a second key to your room. So you'll kick your brothers Ass the next time he locks himself in your room with a Install-CD. In the mean time, let HyperMakarel kick his ass. Good Night PrincessPeach |

Read what you said. Then reread the stuff you just quoted. God damn. The stuff you quoted says that he lost the stuff and then had to remake it. That has nothing to do with finding it. Nothing was found! The fact that he wasn't ABLE to find it required that he redo the entire thing, which is what caused it to be better in the end (since he knew how to do it and what could be improved).

Originally posted by PrincessPeach Except booting from CD and then baleeting the HDD ruins the first option. The best way is simply back things up on a regular basis, and in several ways (e.g. distributing a well-locked RAR on the internets, burning to CD, copying to a floppy, whatever) |

I think it's pretty safe to say that most of us have experienced data loss on our projects in some form or another. I know I have with old End of Destiny.
Just get a removeable hard drive and keep whatever you might prospectiovely do with Super Mario Brothers 3 on it, take it with you, and be careful not to stick the thing near anything magnetic (unless it has REALLY GOOD shielding, like poslsibly some of those external ones). Set backs are always discouraging, but you have to ignore the sense that you will never again be able to acheive what you lost. That's pessimism and the only thing it can do is bite you in the ass and keep you from doing something. I know from having lost and retyped various stages of my novel that the creative processo only gets sharper if you keep going. The longest manuscript I was able to type was 150 pages long, standard computer paper sized and font size 10, printed. The middle of the book just fell a-fuckikng part on me and I had to restart. This was in winter of 2000-2001 I think. Besides, you think 3 weeks is bad? I've lost months worth of work before, and its always shitty, sure, but I god back on my feet allright even through the suck of the situation. Think of it this way. Since you can't do exactly what you did last time, don't frustrate yourself by trying. Do something new or revive old ideas that may have been good ones. |

I'll have to agree, 3 weeks ain't too much, you got 4 things to do, and thats it, Birdo, that open OW area, storm thingy, and the thwomp hat, basically thats it. It might come out better this time too.

Actually, this is what was lost:
Pipes that lead to other worlds function Making pipes appear on the map screen after completing its castle Unlocking pipes Keeping track of unlocked pipes Keeping track of what fortresses are completed Keeping track of what locks are unlocked two different locks two different keys Display current amount of green coins you have Display levels completed with green coins obtained A lot of object definition altering Water currents Birdo A water background tile map, allowing for background tiles that act like water 6 levels Object redefinitions (tile mapping) More pattern tables that can be switched out with some objects So yeah, it's a lot more lost that what you'd think. |

Well, look at it this way... if you give up, it's like losing the entire hack. All the work you've already put into it ends up being for nothing.

Maybe you could go back to the original plan, SMB3DX. Start a fresh new hack, with slightly altered levels, graphics, and some ASM hacks here and there. You could have a new hack out in less than half the time it was taking to do this one. Because I can imagine how much work you have put into MA2, and finding the will to make up for all the lost work would be really hard. The concept of SMB3DX wasn't bad though. By the way, do you still have the screenshots from when you first announced that?

first off, I've spent over a year and a half working on this hack and have essentially "restarted" twice (that is going back and redoing the levels and the map systems). I'm not cancelling it, just putting it in ice until I get the motivation to work, but if people keep saying what I'm choosing to do is the "easy way out" or what have you, it doesn't help with the motivation bit on continuing this hack. It's a hobby, it's meant to be fun and when you use 3 weeks of work, it becomes very unfun to have to redo it.

Albeit indeed that the thread title is a little misleading, but it was clear from your first post that you were only taking a break.. and quite understandable that is. Take your rest, be at ease. A lot of people are very much looking forward to seeing your creations completed, but that doesn't mean we are all impatient, or cannot relate to these problems.. Don't sweat it, and go back to it whenever you feel it is worth it again. |

The point in everyone's comments, are that they were anticipating Diaz's hack so much, that this news is simply overwhelming. There are few hacks which generate this sort of hype. It seems to most of us that we can certainly not hear of any news about this hack for quite some time... Now where's Omega with his Zelda hack!!! |

I realize "on ice" doesn't actually mean "cancelled"... just I've never seen a hack go from "on ice" to "finished". |
