Does anyone know of a good free (or demo) data recovery software that can retrieve file off of a hard disk that has had Windows 98 reinstalled onto it after having the partition erased (I guess through fdisk)? I looke dup R-Studio, but it only supportsd files up to 64KB, and the file I'm wanting to recover is 4MB. (For those of you who are interested, it's the COTMK 1 ROM) | |||

Your FAT is probably hosed. If your drive was fragmented, you might not find all the clusters of the file in order. Use a direct disk editor like WinHEX to find a part of the file that you know, then hope the file wasn't fragmented, then all the clusters will be contiguous. If it was fragmented, then you might only find one cluster at a time in scattered locations.
Whenever you want to recover data, don't write to the disk you want to recover from, since that might overwrite the file you're interested in. Use a bootable CD or something. (edited by Dwedit on 08-05-06 05:50 AM) (edited by Dwedit on 08-05-06 05:50 AM) (edited by Dwedit on 08-05-06 05:52 AM) |
