For TV series, I'd have to say Fullmetal Alchemist (I prefer Japanese with English subtitles over American version) and Rurouni Kenshin (still wondering if it's in syndication,or completely off-the-air). For movies, I'd have to say ALL of the Miyazaki films.
Oh yeah, Fullmetal Alchemist is the ONLY show that has managed to make me silently cry. Not that it just has a great story... But the kick-ass fights are awesome. |

If you get a chance... watch Dr. Slump!
It's cute and funny. There's a good amount of innocent sex jokes and potty humor in it to keep you entertained. I used to watch this all the time when I was little. |

Although it's totally unrelated, (Bouche's post reminded me), I still can't really figure out what "Mai Otome" is supposed to be called. Now with hime you'd just have one kanji (姫 ), but with them writing it like 乙HiME and not 乙女 it can't exactly be otome either. I have seen it written as otohime as well somewhere, which would work since there's actually a word like that (乙姫, meaning "youngest princess"). Now the next question is just how to convince all those fanboys that they've been wrong all this time :O! (edited by Jilkon on 07-15-06 12:04 PM) |

Saiyuki is a great anime to see, along with full metal panic, and hikaru no go, MAR and prince of tennis. The last three can be seen on Toonamijetstream right now on Toonamijetstream.com ONLY IF YOU LIVE IN THE USA!!!!
Saiyuki and fullmetal panic can be seen on DVD or animenetwork. |

Originally posted by Jilkon It's written 舞-乙HiME. The official pronunciation is マイ・オトメ (MAI OTOME) which you will see in furigana, check the official website (which romanises as My ZHiME btw, like My HiME, i hate those both ), manga, whatever, and.. pretty much everywhere. "otohime" is an uncommon incorrect transliteration, but I've seen it around too. I agree that Mai Otohime would seem more "correct" than Mai Otome, which does seem a bit strange, but we're talking about Japanese, who do many strange things. Of course, if you watched commercials and other various related material where the title is actually spoken out, you would realise this too -- Unrelated, KGNE got licensed as "Rumbling Hearts", by FUNimation...ew... Just curious... would some of you guys (like Val) still echo the Eureka Seven love? Because it'll be airing in Canada come the fall so it would be nice to have something to look forward to.

Originally posted by DJ BoucheOriginally posted by Jilkon The furigana and what's really written is totally different things. Basically you're supposed to read it as Otome but it means Youngest Princess (not Young Lady or whatever meaning of Otome you like). Some examples include in Berserk when they write something like "Nemesis" in kanji and "Best friend" in furigana (didn't see the actual page so I don't know the kanji/words used, but that's the essence of it, they have some love/hate relationship) and like writing Asu (meaning tomorrow) as furigana on 未来 (Mirai, meaning future). On topic: The last few days I've watched eps 198-271 of One Piece. Holy fuck. I have probably said it before, but One Piece RULES. Super humour, super cool fights, both mixed and all that stuff. It's also at the point where even the lesser characters become cool and start owning stuff. I lub. |

Originally posted by Jilkon Perhaps I misunderstood you, I thought you were confused on how it was pronounced. Yes furigana/ruby text are only a pronunciation guide and does not redirect the meaning of the kanji whatsoever and only the way it is spoken. I'm unsure whether you should be reading/translating HiME as 姫 (princess), since this is the in-anime acronym for "Highly-Advanced Materialising Equipment". (The main characters are referred to as HiME). Of course, both the 舞 and HiME parts of the title are used in puns in the anime itself (eg, Nagi associating "dancing" with "Mai"), taking advantage of ambiguous pronuncations: 舞 (meaning dance), 舞 (the first name of the main character), My (the English possesive pronoun), and 姫 (meaning princess), HiME (short for "Highly-Advanced Materialising Equipment"). Like I said previously, Sunrise officially romanises it as "My-HiME", the Bandai has also licensed it as "My-HiME" for North America. I've heard translations ranging from Dancing princess, My princess, Dancing HiME, My HiME, Dancing young princess, My young princess, etc.. I prefer the original Japanese titles and the romanisations "Mai-HiME" and "Mai-Otome", myself, however whichever way you choose still fits in with the anime. |

I hardly can belive none of these have been already mentioned:
Paranoia Agent FLCL Elfen Lied Serial Experiments: Lain |

It could be because all those are very very strange/special and don't suit everyone . Besides, if I wanted weird humor (people seem to think FLCL is the epitome of fun), I'd go for Sexy Commando Gaiden or Guu or something.

Originally posted by Jilkon While I can agree on that with Lain, I think Elfen Lied FLCL and Paranoia Agent aren't that (due to a lack for a better word) "weird". The first was drama and tragedy on steroids, the second is your traditional "boy feelings are maturing and is in love of someone older tha him" with a crazy twist, and the third is one of the most lovely symbolic social critiques I have seen. I would have mentioned Evangelion as well, but that a little more mainstream than the others. EoE had a suffocating amount of sexual connotations. Originally posted by Jilkon I loved FLCL because Haruko reminds me of someone I know IRL. (edited by MisterJones on 07-31-06 05:28 PM) |

Just started ゼロの使い魔 (Zero no Tsukaima), which features most of the staff from SnS, and is very much like it imo. And Honey & Clover II, Otogi-Jushi Akazukin, and Ouran. Though very few of us here actually go for anime like these, and are more for the mainstream it seems :x. Still, worth the mention

Saikano is good if you want to cry. I mean it. I have a friend who has done The Robot to a song called "Sadness", 2/3 of which is crying, and he openly admits to crying while watching this anime.
I've only seen 5 eps, and I'm not watching more until I have someone to cuddle while watching. |

Ayashi no Ceres, it probably one of the best series that I've seen in a very long while. I don't generally watch anime, but I've watched 6 hours of it in a 24 hour stretch... As in, whenever I could.
As for where to find it, a certain YouTube may contain it.. |

Originally posted by Shadic Agreed. I rate it excellent. I enjoy Bleach. I'm curious to see how the dub is vs the sub. Both Mai Hime and Mai Otome were great, but Hime was a touch better. I'm currently watching Tsubasa Chronicle, and I'm enjoying that as well. FLCL was too far out in right field for my tastes. I don't think I could have made it past 6 episodes if more had been made. |

If you enjoyed Genshiken, go watch NHK ni Youkoso. It's slightly more nerdy and disturbed even, and it has a storyline. If you haven't watched Gunbuster, go watch it. I can guarantee it's worth 3 hours. After that get Diebuster, the sequel. (A note: people seem to think the sequel is called Gunbuster 2, that is not the case. Top wo Nerae - Gunbuster. Top wo Nerae 2 - Diebuster. Not that hard really.) |
