Well as much as it pains me to say this, Mario Adventure 2 is being, as of now, put on ice. Unfortunately it was lost due to my brother reinstalling Windows and file recovery programs were unable to retrieve it. My latest back up is just after 4th of July. I don't feel like going back another 3 weeks to recover lost ASM hacking and the like. So I just give up. Unless by some holy miracle Im able to recover a much more recent copy, I'm letting this project go.

This is why everyone should back up their files more often and not share computers. But at any rate, you should NOT allow this to set you back. Don't give up on the project. You've gone too far to let it all go to waste now. I mean, you already have a lot of ASM installed. Just because you lost a bunch of stuff doesn't mean you should throw it all away just like that. If you quit right now, all of that time will have been wasted. Do you want that? I don't think so. If you need to, take a break for a week or two to let it all blow over, and start it up again. Just don't throw the project away entirely - for our sake and your sake. (edited by asdf on 07-31-06 08:32 PM) |

Is it pathetic that my heart actually sank when I read that?
Probably. |

your a funny guy, July 31st fooooooools!!!!!!
no really that blows that you dont back up your work everyday. No need to punish yourself. Listen up! I'm sure you realize that all files never leave your hardrive no matter how much they are deleted or erased. Take your hard drive to a computer store and see if they can restore your files. It IS possible. So to everybody! Deleting files from your computer only deletes the address going to the file! It is still there until something else uses that address. So when dumping out your computer don't just delete all those embarassing pictures you take of yourself, REMOVE the harddrive and take a sledgehammer to it. I await Mario Adventure 2's return |

The thing is, access to my computer was restricted by a locked door. My brother broke into my room to do this. I never would have foreseen this coming, else I would have kept a weekly back up.

Take I'minvisibles advice and take your hard drive to a computer nerd. More nerdy then you. Chances are the file is still there (seeing as ROM files aren't that big anyway)

Well, the reason it was lost is understandable. I doubt anyone is going to lecture you in backing up your hacks.
One question: Why would your brother break through a locked door to format a computer he shouldn't be on in the first place? |

That being the case, that sucks. However, you still should not give up so easily. I mean, stating facts, you are one of the greatest SMB3 hackers ever, if not, the greatest. And many ROM hackers from the dumbest of idiots to the smartest of elite will run into such roadblocks sooner or later. I sense you have never had such a big problem on your hands before, so you were probably unprepared for the shock of losing all that hard work. Like I said, it may kill your inspiration for a while, but you should not let it set you back forever. Let's face it: even the greatest people make mistakes. Now that you know such a risk exists, you know you have to be a little more careful in the future. And don't keep it "iced" for too long, or else your inspiriation may leave you, permanently. And that would be beneficial to nobody.

Don't worry, the hack isn't dead for good. I'm not giving up on rom hacking. In fact, I'm going to focus on creating several tools for SMB3 so others can create awesome ASM hacks. First project on my list? SMB3 Sprite Editor.

Oh well...The demos of the hack are still fun, plus Mario Adventure 1. Good luck with making tools, DD. I expect to see something good.
Another thing...would this also be a good time to start rebuilding your site? (edited by The Onyx Dragoon on 07-31-06 09:50 PM) |

Hmmm... that sucks. That's somewhat like what happened to my COTMK 1 hack... 'cept it was the comptuer store that did it and the OS was Win98SE.
Yuor best bet is to take the drive to recovery - if you had lots of other crap on your ocmputer before making your SMB3 ROM, you likely had the ROM in a location on the drivce that ahsn't been written on yet. |

Well I went through that before, doing a custom versus map fer SC:CT on pc, through the editor and the map is a recreation of SC1 police map(finally though it's built up a good bit), had to do it over like 4 or more times. And that 3d, hard sometimes to do over again. Also I need to get into my super mario world hack, but that thing on zophar isn't windows, I need help on what it's talking of about commandline and it says why it will kick you off the program as soon as it starts, but I don't quite know what it's talking about.

Even though I have no huge-scale projects like that, I back up my semi-important stuff every week... IF I make changes to it. Because I never know when some asshat is going to do something to my computer. Or if my HDD is going to fail. Or whatever. I just back it up because SHIT HAPPENS.
Good rule of thumb: Carry a shovel. I'm really sorry that hack was lost, man. Also, I hope you got any other files you needed out of that recovery program you were talking about. (edited by KP9000 on 07-31-06 11:53 PM) |

Hence "as of now on ice" meaning for an undetermined amount of time. Im not giving up on it completely. I'm half thinking about recreating MA2 as either Super Mario World or as a homebrew PC game. Im leaning towards the latter.

I have never seen a project get un-iced, but should you restart a SMW hack would be very interesting. A PC fangame however, would completely kill the point.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! this project looked so good
but yeah... I would aim for a SMW hack... the OW would be a lot easier to make for SMW and you could more easliy have custom graphics.... plus the SMW engine is more advanced than SMB3s (edited by TeRaByTe88 on 08-01-06 12:22 AM) (edited by TeRaByTe88 on 08-01-06 12:23 AM) |

... That sure was creative. It made you look so great, Terabyte.
A homebrew PC game would surely be something creative; I'd love to see it happen. |

When I saw this title I was just praying it was some sort of pun related to Mario dying in the game.
Originally posted by TeRaByTe88 Agreed. This is why I back up to disks/flash cards scattered about the room, plus online. Say, where do you live, and what does your brother look like? (edited by HyperMackerel on 08-01-06 12:25 AM) |
