And it seems like we're not alone...
TwilightRO's DNS is down too (I belive acmlm.org and twilight.kafuka.org is both registered by Emuz orginally.). Damn, it's really affecting board activity. |

2:20 p.m. EST sounds about right. I had the boards, the site, and the wiki (that other place was just really slow for a while, then it died too) go down for me around that time, and it stayed down until around 7:00 p.m. EST. VGMusic.com also seems to have died, but I'm not sure if this was related to the DNS assaults. (EDIT: It was just a coincidence: just another security hole in the site).
Does anyone else remember that huge DNS server DDoS earlier this year? It was mentioned on that page: VeriSign was attacked by many hackers. What it doesn't mention is that another DNS server was attacked, and another one started to get attacked before it went back to normal. A couple of DNS hosts were knocked off the map for a short while. This appears to be a similar attack. (edited by asdf on 07-28-06 05:12 PM) |

You'd think people with that much computer knowledge would do something better than piss people off and possibly get in legal trouble
Maybe I can score on the ACS with one post Wouldn't that be something awful? (No pun intended) |

No ACS is going on during this. Says Colin.

Heh, if I didn't know Xkeeper elsewhere, I'd still be confused as to what happened to the board.
Good thing it wasn't a (direct) hacker attack. |

Nope, no ACS while this is going on. Nothing counts.
The problem isn't just that board.acmlm.org is down, but that the kicks-ass.org server can be exceptionally slow at times - I'm sure a lot of the main posters know where to go, but I tried to load the page before and it took 30 seconds to load despite a 0.5 second rendering time. |

Whoo, DNS on acmlm.org is working again. The server's still acting super-slow though. (btw, acmlm.kicks-ass.org uses the same server as the normal board.acmlm.org)

I think I found the chatroom; just to make sure, what is it again? #rohmacking on espernet?
(Let's all go there everytime the board crashes, just in case.) |

DNS is back up for me on acmlm.org but obviously that's not the case for everyone I'm guessing.
Hopefully it's all cleared up in the next few hours. craig: Yes. |

The propigation will take as long as it takes. Changes to the root of the DNS tree can take up to a day or more (espically with ORG). Unfortunately, I had to set up a glue record to point dns.acmlm.org to the actual DNS server because Mouse screwed something up big time.
Xkeeper Took the board down in a blaze of glory, only to reveal how truly moronical ||bass is. Since: 11-17-05 From: Henderson, Nevada Last post: 6426 days Last view: 6426 days |

Like I tried to tell Ailure, the DNS server wasn't "hacked" and we don't rely on some huge hosting company for DNS (afaik.)
Take special note of the fact that page mentions it took 25m tops to fix the problem, whereas afaik the old DNS server is just dead. Like ||bass said, it was probably just a rather severe misconfiguration or spontaneous error. |

Yeah, I thought it seemed infeasible... But eh.

What happened is that amber.stormbirds.org got repointed to the old server that doesn't exist anymore. Someone or something wrote an old copy of the stormbirds.org DNS file over the current one.

I was checking every now and then to see if the board came back. It came back for me about a little after 7pm. I'm glad the board is back though.

I started to wonder why both of those sites' DNSes were down at the same time.
Good that one of the works again, at least. |

I already thought that the problem lies in the 64k modem I had on vacation (which self-destructed shortly after that) when I saw I couldn't access acmlm.org. Well, nice to know that acmlm.org just was down.
I was on vacation, so no harm done. |

Trust me, we would have found out somehow if it was hacked. Not every DNS change goes smoothly and not every ISP is on the ball when it comes to updating them.
