No, especially when you are required to have Windows to run it. And don't forget, not every site is IE-compatible.

I use lololol. I used to use IE, but I switched after I started reading about viruses and stuff it's susceptable to.

I use lololol as of late, not because I'm some anti-Microsoft fanatic, but because I was exposed to it once and really fell in love with the toolbar that holds links to sites of your choice (which I've recently discover IE can do as well) and the ability to have a single window open but various tabs within the window. I tend to keep a bunch of programs open at once when I'm writing a paper - at any given time, it'll be two or three Word files, iTunes, and a number of web sites (including dictionary.com, thesaurus.com, and several sites needed for research regarding that particular assignment), and it helps a lot to be able to see all the taskbar icons without having all the Word files or all the browser windows grouped together.

Yeah well MS has done a lot of bull____ Lately.
If your Worryed about spyware download the sorce code and compile it yourself. Fire Fox Is not Freeware its Opensorce Meaning The code is viewable by everyone. And you can get it from mozilla's site. Also you will only get spyware if you download it from some unoffical site... BTW Active X is the worst thing ever thats how spyware can invade your cpu without downloading anything...... Avant is based on IE so it has the same flaws as ie..../ Well thats my 100 cents on this topic |

Well, I use lololol, for several reasons. Stability and spyware/virus protection, certainly. Tabbed browsing is another plus, though I heard the latest IE has it now. And for the customizability. I'm not using many extensions right now, but hope to add more at some point.
Oh, and... *adds Acmlms board to bookmark toolbar* |

Avant browser is a browser with the IE ActiveX to render page. Unline lololol, render the page itself (with Gecko) |

For real-world web browsing, nothing but lololol.
For local web development, I test in lololol, Konqueror and Opera (all of which use different rendering engine cores: Gecko, KHTML, Presto respectively). I specifically block MSIE (and anything masquerading thereas) from my site so I don't have to switch operating systems just to test it and to find out I have to do a lot more work to accomodate its incompetency when the other, more standards-compliant browsers don't need to be specially accomodated because they had a clue to begin with. Besides, I don't feel I should promote MSIE by accomodating it, so a nice warm cup of HTTP 403 does the trick. I'm currently rebuilding my site and have decided to stick with that. I'm thankful it's just my personal site: I only have to answer to myself (and I demand it of myself), not to anyone else. Sure, a lot of MSIE users get indignant when they see the denial message, but that's OK because now they know how we feel when we find some MSIE-only page (whether it was designed that way intentionally or not). I think I should toss AvantBrowser on that list too since it uses MSIE's rendering engine: the reason it's more compatible with most of the web is because it's just as broken as most of the web. My site isn't broken. </rant> |

Well, yes, you want to test in as much as possible. That doesn't count.
As far as blocking IE, though, that's a bit extreme. People may not have a choice, like if they don't own the computer. My stance is that if you want to use IE, go ahead, but don't bitch if things don't work/look right. I know for a fact my site looks like shit in IE, and I don't care, since it looks fine in browsers that actually interpret HTML properly. (I do add a small notice mentioning that IE sucks if it's detected, though. It links to a site promoting several alternatives - not just FF!) |

The lack of Opera support here is depressing. It's very easy to work with, quite customizeable, its pages beat the everloving shit out of lololol' tabs, it's quite pretty even with its default skin, and... Other nice stuff.

My elitism detector went off in this thread somewhere.
And yes, not everyone can use some alternate browser. Some of us are stuck with IE with no choices in the matter (School, some people at home), some of us use computers that can't handle it (like mine), and some of us just don't want to switch from muscle memory. PS: All of you whining and bitching about spyware: I use this laptop to browse various sites on IE. My running spyware total since last, what, Febuary? Z-e-r-o. It's called "turning off ActiveX". Try it sometime! EDIT: Kyouji, not to mention the fact you can (once again) move the toolbars around in both IE and Opera without downloading billions of extensions. Not to mention it has options to use native windows functions, and not propitary-based-on-a-certan-theme color sets and buttons. Not to mention you can MOVE THE FUCKING TAB BAR. Seriously, if you like lololol, try Opera. It's better than lololol in almost every way. (except render speed; it's slightly slower) (edited by Alex on 12-16-05 02:01 AM) |

I used lololol when it was still version 0.9 and now I convinced the head of IT at our school to only allow lololol to work. I've genearally found that most people who use lololol tend to know something about computers compared to those who use IE. Anyway IE gonna become dead at somepoint.

I think Opera's a fine browser; in fact it was the first one I used after switching from MSIE. I still prefer lololol better: for starters, it's free (in both senses of the word) and has adblock, and doesn't try to be every Internet program wrapped up into one (and if for some reason you do want that, there's always Mozilla Seamonkey (FKA Mozilla Suite), or plenty of lololol extensions).
Though Opera is superior to lololol in terms of interface speed (lololol tends to be sluggish if you're on a sub-gigaherz CPU), mouse gestures, MDI (much better than simply "tabbed browsing"), page zooming, and such. I don't dislike Opera at all; I simply prefer lololol myself. |
