I've gotten pretty caught up with other things lately, so I wanted to get a release out in case I fall off the face of the Earth for awhile. Get the program
here. Read the readme, and see if you can't get my sprites running around in your roms. If anyone is daring enough to try sprite hacking, you're gonna need to be good with asm. take a look at the tutorials. If things are unclear help me make them better. Have fun. The only word I can possibly use to describe this release: tits. Excellent work on the release, mikeyk. Now, I will be the first to officially say, "in before all the retards make tons of posts and later topics complaining they can't get it to work".

OK, I just gave it a shot: This is much easier to insert sprites into than I would have expected! I'll have to dick around with this some more...

I get an error message:
"couldn't open ./sprites/" it happend when I try to insert the missile bill and a modifyed version of the giant goomba. I checked all the paths in the *.cfg files and they're correct (edited by ghettoyouth on 07-15-06 11:50 AM) (edited by ghettoyouth on 07-15-06 11:52 AM) |

I'm looking forward to playing a hack with some of these inserted in there.
Very nice, mikey. |

ghetto: Are you using a cfg file from a test version? I changed the format a bit. There are now two extra property bytes in between the Tweaker bytes and the filename. Edit: The only sprites that use the extra bytes so far are the ridable sprites (beezo, shy_guy, snift, para_beetle) and roto_disc2. Just set them both to 00 for other sprites.
Another thing to note is that cfg and asm files cannot have spaces in their filenames. (edited by mikeyk on 07-15-06 12:09 PM) |

Also, this confused me a bit. I wanted to put in the boomerang bro, but when I typed in boomerang_bro.cfg it didnt work. Thats not what you are supposed to put in. Put in the name of the text file with the list of cfg files you are going to use. That confused me for quite a while. (edited by Kario on 07-15-06 12:12 PM) |

kario: there are two things you should be typing into sprite tool itself: the rom name and sprite list. sprites.txt in the main directory is an example of a sprite list. read the readme for more information.

All I can really say is, excellent work. If you are able to bend a ROM around this much, I would love to see what you could do with a SMW hack itself.
I'm definitely gonna play around with this, and see what happens |

Yay Sprite tool is released. It caught me totally offgaurd when I saw this topic. Downloading right this moment.
EDiT: Ghettoyouth, the same problem happened to me when I put the sprite file path in. I know the path is correct caused a copy what the name of the sprite file was. EDiT: Fixed the problem, Ghettoyouth instead of putting the sprite cfg files you put in Sprites.txt (edited by Soulblader88 on 07-15-06 01:45 PM) (edited by Soulblader88 on 07-15-06 03:28 PM) (edited by Soulblader88 on 07-15-06 03:29 PM) |

... It's like I just vomitted all of my emotions into a drink and drank them all again. Truly amazing work. I'm the type of person who tries to screw around with stuff in programs before asking for help, so don't expect so many questions, or any questions at all, from me.

Once people get the feel of SpriteTool, would it be possible to copy the codes from sprites in other games directly and repoint the JSL's, subroutines, and RAM addresses to make it run properly? Of course, as long as it isn't something like LoZ: A Link to the Past, Super Mario RPG, or some game like that.
As much as I would love to be original, I am not very creative, and would probably rather take a crack at other game's sprites (preferably Mario games). Also I know a moderate amount of ASM, but I'm willing to look into it more to learn about hacking sprites just for this. |

I doubt it... I imagine the pure number of differences in the game system alone would make this highly improbable.

In the readme I still don't understand how to add graphics to the custom sprites. do i make a exgfx file or what? i don't want toverwrite the 1A tile cause that is for the paranha plant and the venus fire trap is also 1A. If i want then in the same level how do i do that?

Okay... I feel pretty foolish being the only one who got this message but...
************ERROR************ couldn't open ROM ********************************* I have a feeling it's my sprite list... Could somebody tell me what exactly I'm supposed to do to make it? (Uhh... it is a .txt file, isn't it??) |
