Lmao, very nice .gif you have there, I'm taking it
Yeah, his legacy is really blemished, because not only did it look almost completely without reasoning, but his team lost as well. PKs are his specialty, with him in there they would've had more confidence I think. Or actually the way they were going, they might've scored during the OT. At least it made for interesting television, on the bright side. |

Horns finally stopped honking over here around 7:00 PM.
They might have scored during OT but all that was wrong during the PK's was Trezeguet's missed shot. Unless Zidane was going to take that shot... |

My friends and I checked during half time. This is the first time since 1974 that the team that scored first did not win (however, you only have to go back to 1994 to find a team that won despite not having scored first. ). Crap result and I'm pissed off, France was by far the better team. I've hated Italian football for as long as I can remember, and it pisses me off to no end that they won.
Zidane put a huge dent in what has been a legendary career. 20 years from now, Zidane will not be remembered the way Beckenbauer, Cruijff, Pelé, and Maradona is remembered, because of what he did. You may say it was an isolated incident, but when it's something you do in the dying minutes of the World Cup Final, in the last match of your career, it is, well, enough to ruin your legacy. Had he not done it and had France won, Zidane would be up there with those guys. Of course, that being said, Marco Materazzi is probably one of the biggest assholes ever to have walked onto a pitch (*cough*UEFA Champions League Quarter Final against Villarreal*cough*), and he was appearantly making racial slurs against Zidane. That doesn't mean Zidane shouldn't have had a red card, but it means that what he did was totally right! I say Zidane scored with his head twice against Brazil in '98, and he scored with his head once against Materazzi today. Edit to clarify: I've hated Italy --> I've hated Italian football. I have nothing against Italy the country, it's the football team I can't stand. (edited by Salmon on 07-09-06 08:38 PM) |

I actually read some comments saying that it's about time SOMEONE took a shot at Materazzi... and if France was up 3-1 with a minute to go in the game, then it would be more than understandable. He shouldn't have lost his cool but the insult must have been something horrid... I mean, he seemed to laugh off the nipple tweak but not what happened following it.
Still, racist comment or not... Materazzi suckered Zidane in. Mission accomplished. |

Even better, thanks to our fine feathered friends at Deadspin:
EDIT: That headbutt wasn't much of a fatality, but... FIFA pulls off a Friendship! Didn't think Zidane would have golden balls, didja? (edited by drjayphd on 07-10-06 01:34 PM) |

Updated the blog with VERY long comments about the game.
If most people had voted after the final instead of before it, it looks like Cannavaro would have won it since he was only a few points behind Zidane... |

Zidane claims Materazzi called him a "dirty terrorist" because he was born to Algerian parents. I'm not sure if its true or not, but it seems like Zidane would've needed quite an insult to drill him like that.

Like Colin eluded to, they voted during the match. Probably right after he scored on that PK too, Lmao. Other than Cannavaro I'm not sure who would've really deserved it.
Let's not forget that this man is one of the greatest football players, ever. We can't take that away from him just because of one bad incident in the WC. I mean, it could happen to any of us, he was tired, frustrated, and pissed off at whatever Materazzi did to him (I heard Materazzi twisted his nipple, not joking either). |

No, a lot of them voted before the final. The deadline was midnight local time.

...You know, the basics of a fun game are there. Just need a score column, no red card ending until so many Materazzi's pass, different speeds...

That's bad.
I know he's the captain, and a veteran of the game, but he's also a human being. We all have our limits, and Mazeratti took it one step further, and Zidane snapped. And it's unfortunate, because instead of remembering Zinedine Zidane as the wizard of the game, people are going to associate this with his image, and it's unfair. |

Originally posted by Toxic I agree that this is going to taint his image and probably cover up anything good he did in his career. Still, being pushed is no excuse for headbutting someone. This isn't just a push or something... A fucking HEADBUTT. While on one hand I feel sorry for him, on the other hand he let his team, his country, and his fans all down. I know we tend to hold sports stars to high standards, but that is part of the load that comes with being a star. |

I'm going to assume that you mean pushed in a literal, not physical sense right? Cause that's what happened. right ok I'm not operating on 5 hours sleep or anything
Zidane's family members are saying that he was called some racial insult to Algerians that is in comparison worse than the "n" word. I don't know what I would do, obviously, and none of us could say that we could honestly hold our selves back in that situation. Like I said before, we all have a threshold, and Zidane's was clearly pretty high. A captain, leader, face of a god damn nation...what about the pressure though? We talk about how he was all these things, and let people down, but do you think he didn't know what was at stake? His final game, the championship? This is starting to ramble, because my brain is slowly stopping, so I'll leave it at that for now, until I sleep a bit more anyways. |

All I know is, I'm still buying that man's jersey when I get a chance, because he's still great. He had a reason to fight back, whether he went too far or not, he has weaknesses just as all humans do. Materazzi is exempt from blame in this society because 1. His team won, 2. He was not a star as Zidane was and 3. We don't have all the facts about what was said between them. That's kind of sad when you think about it.

The article Toxic was referring to can be seen here. That might shed some light on the issue. Still inexcuseable, yes. It was probably pent-up stress that caused Zidane to have such a reaction. But as I mentioned, it is an original way to end a career. And Matterazzi did get what was coming to him. Sort of.

Rumours on the Internets are that he was called a "son of a terrorist whore" or something, which given the news about his seriously ill mother would have been doubly as insulting.

If either of those are true, it proves two things. 1) Materazzi is a piece of shit (which we already knew), and 2) it wasn't just something like "yo momma's fat" (edited by Toxic on 07-11-06 09:29 AM) |
