Alrighty then, back on track. At least I wasn't here during all of that. Anyway, I've used your tutorial, jensthecomposer, and I can't get it to work. I'm using 010 as my hex editor, and whenever I try to change the level type for the castle grounds or change it's music, the values I put in are correct. But, when I fire up 1964 and play SM64, I don't see any apparent changes. What am I doing wrong?

Changing the music doesn't work (crashes), but changing the level mode seems to work just fine. Are you starting the game normally or do you use a save state?

Try the attached IPS file (patch to a Big Endian (Z64) ROM). If Mario doesn't throw sand particles while moving outside the castle, something is wrong with your ROM (or your emulator, didn't you also have a problem with Rice's Video with 1964?). |

I just figured it out. I have been editing the extended ROM the entire time, when I thought I was editing the original. Oh, and about that video plugin thingy, I figured it out. Now I feel bad about asking all those questions...

How to edit the music of levels
1. Open jensthecomposer's document and jump to the offset of the level you want to change the music of. Here we will take 'Outside the Castle' as an example, so jump to offset 454C08. 2. A little before the offset you can find the string: 36 08 00 00 00 00 (last byte may be different depending on level). 4. The last byte is what you want to change. Use the music list in jensthecomposer's document to chosse your favorite tone, then enter it. 5. Save the ROM, start it and be happy. This method is much clearer than the poorly worded tutorial in jensthecomposer's document not even I understood. (edited by Prince Kassad on 07-09-06 03:08 PM) |

Okay I figured out something wrong in my tutorial (Was a bit tired and didn't test it at that time).
This is what I said first: "1. A little before 31 04 00 02 you'll see 36 08!!! Change that 08..." Here's the correction: 1. A little before 31 04 00 02 you'll see 36 08 00 00 00 08, change that last 08 (or whatever number it is, just make sure it's the 5th value after the "36") 08 is the value for the snow theme and that tricked me when I made the tutorial |

Thanks for the help guys! The Castle Grounds goes really good with the credits song for some reason. Something tells me that VL-Tone's gonna whip out his editor real soon, when we least expect it.

Some Mario 64 music tracks are not in the music variable list, so I wanted to ask if there is anything after value 22, or if they simply crash/do nothing.

They do nothin'. I tried 23, and all I heard was the outdoor noises/ water falls.

Information: For the values that are listed as 'Crash', you have to edit the music parameters (Byte 4 from 36 08 00 00 00 00). For example, 36 08 00 02 00 19 triggers the final Bowser music.
To get the parameters, go to the offset of the level that has the music you want. (Or try to search with wildcards) (edited by Prince Kassad on 07-09-06 04:03 PM) |

Same for me, it also does that on 7F and FF. Sounds like a cross between a high pitched sound if Metal mario walking with the sound of climbing up a tree. Wierd.

We're using the hex editor to edit level types and change the music on SM64. Anyway, I think those wierd sounds were a sound test of some sort not taken out by Nintendo when they made the game. They probably used it to test out the sound to make sure it worked in game, and apparently it didn't, so they probably changed it and forgot to take the test out.
