Uhhh, I would've answered, it may have been an issue regarding performance or he just wants you to fill in for someone. I know it can be tough trying to find someone fit for the job so it may not have been very wise to leave him hanging. :/

I'd have probably answered the phone, and if I couldn't (or just didn't want to) fill in, I'd have told him that honestly, not left him\her hanging like that.. Besides, could have been due to a vast amount of other reasons as well, and.. well I just can't see myself ignoring the call purposely.

Eh. I would've picked up the phone and pray silently that the conversation doesn't involve me getting up from the bed.

... I would've answered. What if I was going to get fired over the phone? It would be humiliating to go to work without knowing you're fired. Then you'll have to make an excuse for not answering the phone... Wouldn't want to be Johnson.

I would have answered it, but considering I work at a place that doesn't open until noon, it wouldn't have been about going into work early or anything like that.
If I did work somewhere that opened at 7 am.... I probably would have ignored it too.

I wouldv'e ignored it. If your boss is like my last boss she wouldv'e been pissed but there's nothing she could do about it. I will cover shifts if the person who needs the shift covered asks. I will not cover shifts if the boss asks unless I really need the money.

Not answering means you don't have to lie.

I'd tell him I have no desire in covering for anyone, so fuck off and let me sleep.

He can't fire me if I'm off-duty, can he?

If he asks, then either you slept through the call or you were outside and didn't know that he phoned.

I mean, IF you were to go the lying route, you have plausible options.

He can fire you whenever he wants. Which is why ignoring the call is a better option if you know you'll get pissy about it.

Nuh-uh. In real life there are LAWS, and if he fires me just cause I didn't take some stupid call to cover for someone else (and off working hours, too) I can complain and say it was an unjustified discharge.

Girl, you have no idea just how pissy I can be due to lack of sleep-- like today.

Coming from my current job, I wouldn't be sure why they'd call that early, but I'd still answer.

In my first job I used to get calls that time or earlier. It was my boss desperately seeking somebody to fill in. She'd always laugh and say "did I wake you?" too. ~_~ But being a casual and only getting paid for when I work -- I'd always go in.

So yeah, in both cases, answer it.

Are you sure? Here you can fire anyone for any reason. That should be a boss' perogative. If you don't think someone is the kind of employee you want, 86 his ass. You can't discriminate based on race or sex, but you don't have to give a reason for firing someone either.

Of course, Louisiana's civil code > other states' civil codes.

In Oregon, you can fire for anything, but some reasons are frivolous and can be fought... But you don't have to say the reason.

I found out what was going on. we open at 9, and the manager who planned to work a 12 hour was in no condition to work his shift, so he was calling for me to come in and work a double. I got called again at 8:40, and was up so i took the call. Ended up being me and another guy for about 11 hours. Man, was he pissed. He had to call in at his night job to help me cover so I wasnt alone untill 8 o clock at night on the 3rd of july. Everyone olse at the store didnt come in, or answer the phone.

I wonder what would've happened if you answered the phone the first time.

My rule is that there is a black out period on telephones from 12 am to 8 am. Call in that time? Don't expect an answer you can leave a message. That is my sleeping time.

Good night.

That is prolly the worst thing you could ever do thats like saying.... "Hey, you called but I dont give a shit." It sounds really irresponsible. Coudln't you just answer the phone and say "Yeah, I would but I have plans actually." Does that not make sense?
