Well, I've only finished 3 of FFIVA's Lunar Ruins trials (Summoner, Engineer and Twin), but surprise surprise, I've already had a tangle with the new edition's secret uberboss, Zeromus EG. Needless to say I killed him the first time, just like I did his regular edition (took me about 5-6 tries on PS1; am I just better, or is he really easier?), but I will say this: despite the fact that he doesn't spam-cast Big Bang like his older brother, he really was tougher. Mostly because he was damn unpredictable.
That said, for those not in the know, Zeromus EG's artwork is actually from the Japan-only Final Fantasy IV EasyType (which, despite frequent misinformation, is not the same as Final Fantasy 2 US, or even close to it). In case you're wondering about the EG suffix, most people say it stands for "Easy Game" (referring to its origin), but I have a slightly different, albeit closely related, theory: in Japanese, "EG" would be pronounced identically to the English word "Easy" ("Iijii"). Now, of course, "EZ" also works, but seeing how the American release was actually a few days before the Japanese one, I suspect there was enough cooperation between the U.S. and Japanese branches to keep them from giving the boss what would look like a misnomer in English. Anyways, the main point in this topic: which Zeromus do you like better? Me, I'll definitely take EG...four-legged death walker armed with a big-ass sword beats misshapen thingy anyday. But to each his own. |

I always liked the easytype graphics for him FAR better than the other one, although I would've liked to see an actual battle against his first form (you know, the one you use the crystal on). It looked cool.
I'm mainly disappointed that if you cheat to put Golbez in your party in the GBA one, it glitches even worse than the SNES one. |

I have to agree that the EasyType artwork is far superior to the original. I guess there's a face somewhere in the original, near the top maybe, but damned if I'd be able to find it now even with a picture.

Original Zeromus' face is to mid-right. Keep in mind it's suppose to somekind of alien insect.

Zeromus is not one of the premier final bosses in the history of final bosses, but at least design-wise, EG looks better.

Actually, my preferance is by far to the original.
The original looks incredibly weird, creepy, and twisted. The new one looks like the final Gilgamesh mixed to an insect... which, in my opinion, is not a good design for a final opponent (I actually find the EG Zeromus ugly and not fitting). Yes, I'm weird. |

I prefer the original. Knowing you fight him/it on the moon it fits better because of the sci-fi graphics. The EG one would probably fit better in Breath of Fire II or a similar game.

One odd thing I realized about Zeromus EG...his sprite is bleepin' huge. Now, original-recipe Zeromus is big, sure, but in the Bestiary he's about a tile from the border on the top, bottom and right sides. Zeromus EG is actually truncated on screen in both the Bestiary and in the game: if his art was untouched except for color depth in the transfer, he's easily about 50% bigger (in tiles) than his vanilla brother.
...Though yeah, the freaky misshapen bug-thing probably fits the context better. EG is undeniably cooler, but a formless spirit of pure evil would probably incarnate itself into something suitably twisted. You don't see any four-legged death walkers storming the streets of Silent Hill, that's for sure... |
