I checked all the teams and couldn't figure it out, so tell me who it is and I'll make sure ESPN wasn't BSing you on that.
Players in a lot of Gulf states get really good money. |

It's Italy, guys. And it's no big surprise, really. The Serie A is one of the biggest leagues in the world, and you don't really see many big Italians going to other leagues, they tend to stay in their home league. Course, who knows what happens with the corruption scandal that's errupting now?
Speaking of trivia. Here's one for ya: What is the only nation in the World Cup not to have a single player from its domestic league in the squad. (This one's really not that surprising, either) (edited by Salmon on 06-20-06 08:53 PM) |

*smacks head* Of course. And that rule used to apply to England as well.
(Although to be fair, *IF* Christian Vieri had a good, injury-free year and played well, he would have broke the duck since he's with Monaco.) The team with no home players is easy. Ivory Coast. Togo came close... |

Did anyone catch England v Sweden today? That one goal by Cole in the corner of the net was simply amazing.

And the news say that Owen is out for the next 5 months. Meaning England is beginning to run short of strikers.

Ruptured (OW) ACL for Owen. He's screwed, meaning Newcastle have to go after a striker and England only has Rooney/Crouch/Walcott. Walcott doesn't look like a bad option.

My argument is that if you name him in the squad and he has all this hype, you should logically play him at some point otherwise the media's going to ask what the point was. (To be fair, Sven's gone after the World Cup but still.) If England's up by a comfortable margin against Ecuador with 20 minutes to go, toss him out there; hell, do so even if they're losing or in trouble.

What a horrible call on the PK in stoppage time to give Ghana a goal.

Ok, I'm beginning to feel real sorry for the US now. The red cards against Italy were one wrong, one doubtful. And that PK that Ghana got was so cheap it was almost ridiculous. I mean, if that was a PK, well then there have been many situations earlier in the tournament that should have been a PK.
The US's goal looked like offside to me at first, but after looking at it in replay, the American goal scorer was behind the ball when the ball was passed. Fair goal. Hope is not over yet for the US, though. Italy is up 1-0 and 11 men against the Czech Rep's 10, meaning that if the US can turn it around and get a 3-2 result, they should go through to the second round, assuming Italy can keep their lead. |

Italy's up 2-0 now, but time's running out. We're going to need to pull an Australia.
An aside: I hate Landon Donovan. He has done absolutely nothing in the World Cup, and he just launched the free kick from right outside the box over everyone and straight out of bounds. Edit: And he just had an open shot on goal and didn't take it. Grrrrrr. (edited by NSNick on 06-22-06 11:52 AM) |

Well, good bye, United States and the Czech Rep. If I may say so, horrid efficiency from America's attackers. However, Markus Merk's refing today has been very strange. He started out with a zero-tolerance policy, handing out very strict yellow cards and a cheap penalty kick. Then, all of a sudden in the second half, he stops giving out yellow cards, being very lenient. Bah, crappy refing all in all.
That being said, the Czech Rep and the US have been very disappointing. I'd like to think the Czech Rep would easily go through had Jan Koller not gotten his early exit, but ohh well... |

The US is not going to be a soccer powerhouse for quite a while. Having expectations for them is like having expectations for Bhutan. They have some talent, but not enough to make it out of a group has difficult as what they were in.
At least Ghana is a pleasent surprise. |

Crappy reffing? You shoulda seen the Australia game. 2 penalties we shoulda been given, including a blatant handball... and Siminic given a second yellow and not being sent off.
Thank Christ we made it through regardless, though. (edited by Arwon on 06-22-06 05:01 PM) |

Three yellows equals a red now? Wow, that'll lead to some more aggressive games.
The PK was a dive but the United States didn't look like they were going to get more than a point anyways. Face it - you guys need to make some serious changes to the team/program if you want to compete. I mean, Donovan was crap, Reyna looked like he's done, McBride tried but he can't do it all by himself, Arena can't coach and he's resigned himself to bashing the officiating... Say goodbye to that #5 in the world spot. Ziff: The United States were expected to do poorly in 2002 and made it to the QF's, something Bhutan will NEVER do. If they get a good draw in 2010 and if the young talent's skilled enough, they should at least get past the groups. |

That USA Ghana game was pathetic. Step up USA, step up.
Oh well, we can at least have pride in our Women's team. |

They were beaten by the better team. :\ Now they'll have to wait four long years... except for, of course, the Gold Cup. (That's basically the North American championship, held every two years. Canada won it once! )

I'm sorry Arwon, it's kinda hard for me to predict sucky refing in a match that hasn't yet been played when commenting on the ref in a finished match being poor. Of course, seeing as how Graham Poll refed, it could be predicted that he would suck.
And, yes, as I said long before the World Cup, the US had no realistic hope of doing good. However, the way they played was worse than I had expected. Colin - that spot would have been lost anyway, as the FIFA Rankings are going to be changed after the World Cup so that they more correctly show the actual standings between teams. Edit: Daniele De Rossi got a 4 match suspension. Meaning he can return to Italy if they make it to the bronze final or final. Pablo Mastroeni got a 3 match suspension, meaning he misses the first two qualification matches for the US. (edited by Salmon on 06-23-06 12:15 PM) |

Senegal made it through too, Colin. Croatia too has done this in the past. So I don't see what your point is. The USA had a terrible team this year and rebuilding it with new talent is going to take another tournament or two. Hell, in that time Canada might actually manage to do some damage in the qualifying round. |
