I recently got a new job(at another nursing home-$12/hr) and am going to get my first paycheck soon.(albeit the arrival is a bit delayed) One of the things I plan to get aside from my books for college is either a DS Lite or a Zen Vision: M.
More of you may be familiar with the DS than the mp3/video player. I am particularly interested in getting one of them around now so I can have something to entertain me on the dreadful 17+hour flight to India in 2 weeks. The Zen Vision:M is an mp3 player, video player, fm radio, recorder, etc. More Info Here. The Lowest Price? ~ $280 after shipping And you all know about the DS. And I recently saw an ad in bestbuy about a cartridge type device that plays songs, videos known as the 'Datel MAX Media Player'. However, I want a DS lite in black and I've heard that the media player can be a bit tricky to work with and get working... DS Lite ~ $130 Datel MAX Media Player ~ $150 |

My friend has something similar to the Zen thing you want.... it's nothing special to me. I'd much rather get the Lite. But if you personally want something that does more than gaming, the choice is obvious.

it all depends on what pleases you most. I mean, for me, I would prefer to play games on that long flight, rather than watch something. That's just my opinion though. I'd go for the DS Lite.

Don't forget he'd have to buy a game or two as well to go with the DS.
Then again, a DS Lite plus two good games... say, New Super Mario Bros. and Tetris DS, or anything that takes a long time to beat would be good. |

Yea, the only problem is that I'm not too crazy about the 'polar white' DS Lite. If I'm gonna buy one, I'd preferably buy the black one. But I don't think one is going to be released within two weeks time. But I COULD possibly maybe buy the black Euro DS Lite (comes out on the 23rd) and have it shipped over before the 29th. (Notice I haven't addressed the different voltage issue) And are the ds games region free? (what i really mean to ask is can i play any import without having to worry about additional crap for my system?)

Well, this is my take on it. I was fully planning on buying an iPod soon, but now I'm getting a Zen Vision:M. I voted for the ZVM. The DS is fun, but for me, I would rather have hours and hours of music and videos than hours and hours of gaming. I get enough gaming out of Guitar Hero right now.
There is an entertainment thing for the DS that lets you listen to music and watch video, but from what I have heard, it is very limited, and not very impressive. |

I vote DS Lite.
MP3s and stuff like that never beats games like NSMB and Metriod Prime: Hunters. DS > Zen Vision:M |

Get the DS. You don't need that $150 battery killer to do all those fun things like play music, movies and old games on it. The Max Media Launcher ($20), any CF or SD adapter ($20-80) and a CF or SD memory card ($20+) will do the same thing.
To be more specific: Max Media Launcher is like a DS-slot mod chip. It loads up like a real DS card and then runs whatever program is on the GBA cart. Since it works like a real card it doesn't require fiddling with SRAM or sticking a real DS game onto the device, doesn't stick out, and is compatible with all units. There are similarly-priced clones as well. Popular CF and SD adapters include GBA Media Player, Supercard and M3. GBAMP is the cheapest option; it's only designed to work in GBA mode, but a firmware hack lets you use it in DS mode too. There is no such hack for the SD version though. Commercial ROMs can't be run from it, only multiboot programs (up to 256K for GBA and 4MB for DS). Supercard includes 32MB of RAM on the cartridge, which can emulate a GBA flash cart, so it does everything GBAMP does, plus play GBA ROMs. From what I hear it's not very compatible though. DS ROMs can be played from it with some patching. M3 is the most expensive; it's similar to Supercard, but more compatible. Then you need a CF or SD card, which you can find anywhere that sells cameras. Look for a program called Moonshell; it plays movies and music, and views images and text files. DSOrganize is also something to check out; a great PDA app. Both are completely free. |
