Croatia should beat Japan and Brazil should at least get a point over Australia, if not all three... but South Korea could beat France. I wouldn't be shocked.

I hope, for our sake, that Japan beat Croatia soundly.

I've never really watched a soccer match in all of my life...but I quite enjoyed that.
I don't get the 'offside' parts yet though, but that was mega-kewl!1elevenshift+1 We're not eliminated yet though, right? |

Offsides is when the offense goes past the defense with the ball, so that there are no defenders between the offensive player with the ball and the goalie.
I'm sure there's a better way to explain that, but I haven't played on a soccer team in years and don't watch too much soccer either. |

Now do I shrug because the loss was expected and we played quite well, or do I rue the multiple missed chances to score?
Bring on Croatia... I'm going to bed. |

Danielle: That's not quite it. Offsides are when you go past a certain point before the ball. Now, if I know these points, that's another story.

My quick guide to the offside rule:
Basically, an offside is called if a player is in offside position when the ball is played (you may be in an offside position before or after the ball is being played without penalty, but you may not be in offside position the moment the ball is played. This is why, when they show replays after offsides are called, they stop the video the exact moment the ball is being passed, thus you can judge for yourself whether the player is offside or not). In addition, a player must be judged as having influenced play when he was in offside position. Basically, you can have a scenario where Player A has the ball and passes it to player B. Player B is onside, but Player C is offside. Player C, however, is on the left flank, while Player B is on the right flank. The ref thus judges that Player C is not influencing play (since he is way over on the other side of the field), and thus the ref does not call an offside. Also remember that offsides can be called retroactively. In a scenario, Player A shoots while Player B is in an offside position. The ref feels that Player B is not influencing play, and as such he does not call an offside. However, Player A's shot bounces of the post, and is picked up by Player B. The ref now calls for an offside, since Player B gained an advantage from being in offside when the original shot was kicked by Player A. Also, remember, you can never be offside if you are on your own half of the field (ergo: the area in which you can be in an offside position starts after you cross the center line), and you can also never be offside if you are behind the ball (Pimpong from Ghana should learn this, as he wouldn't have been offside when he scored against the Czech Rep if he had only taken two steps backwards and thus he would have been behind the ball in stead of in front of it). You are also not offside if the ball is played from either a goal kick, corner kick, or throw-in. Now that's all fine and dandy, you might think. But one question remains: When are you in an offside position? The answer is that you are in an offside position if you are closer to the opponent's goal line (the short line) than all but one of their players (this usually means that you are offside if you are closer than all but their goal keeper, but it can be anyone, for example if the goal keeper had run up to the other goal in a last-minute attempt at scoring a crucial goal on a corner kick). You are in an onside position if there are at least two players between you and the goal line (usually the goal keeper + a defender). Ukraine SHOULD beat the Saudis, just like Spain should beat Tunisia.
...actually, if Spain play like they did against Ukraine, they could potentially rip the Tunisians a new one. And how bad was France today? Brazil too but that's more "disappointing" than "awful". Ye gads. |

And that's all she wrote. It keeps Україна in the series with our next game against Tunisia. I'm going to watch the Spain v Tunisia game and hope for the best for Ukraine (worse for the other two teams )

Shev's gonna kiiiill youuu...
If they weren't already down 2-0 entering halftime, that third goal would've broken Saudi Arabia. A minute into the second, header off the free kick, boom, the keeper had no shot whatsoever. Didn't Saudi Arabia get killed dead in 2002, though? This year's probably going to be seen as an improvement. Fun fact: Saudi Arabia's one of two teams this go-around whose World Cup roster is made up of just players who play in domestic leagues. The other one kind of surprised me, but maybe it shouldn't have. |

That's because Saudi Arabia, last I checked, doesn't allow its players to be sold to domestic teams. I know if you try to do so in Football Manager it tosses up the "OH NO YOU DON'T" screen. Heck, even North Korea has a couple of players in Japan on the national team.
Who's the other domestic-only team? |

I wonder who it is. It came as a surprise to me when I was told a few days ago, but I can't remember now.
Plus Saudi Arabia is the Great Revolving Door of Coaches. You lose ONE game you're out. |

They did mention the other team during ESPN's broadcast, which I know was a HUGE help to the two of you. I wouldn't be surprised if the situation changed in the near future, though, for the other team. (ahem)
SA doesn't allow their players to be sold? How do they do that? It sounded like they paid the players very well, so maybe that's it. |
