Everything about the World Cup goes right here. Match thoughts, news, comments, swearing about your team, etc. Don't make me double-post several dozen times in here.
Oh, and just as an informal poll... the first time you post in here, mention which team(s) you're rooting for so we can bash you if necessary. (Me: England, Ivory Coast, Czech Republic, Australia, Ukraine. List subject to change if a team really impresses me or craps the bed.) |

I'm going for the U.S. to make it out of their group but the 2nd favored team to win the cup, which I still need to find out.

The second favored team?
If you're talking overall, I think the bookies have Brazil first, England second. |

It's gonna be France all the way for me. People are really discounting their chances this time, but the Les Bleus can really win against any team that comes against them. I can't understand why Robert Pirés was dropped against this uncapped guy, the midfield is strong nevertheless. With Henry and Trezeguet upfront there's no question about the forward lineup. It's the defense that looks lacking in comparison, but I'm sure they will make up for it.
Other teams I'm rooting for are The Netherlands and England. |

France... wow, that pick takes guts. I mean, they SHOULDN'T choke in their group but you never know. I don't think France is nearly as good as they were in 1998, but they might make it to the QF's at best. They could beat Spain, but Ukraine could give them a tough time.
Netherlands have to get out of their group, and that won't be easy. Whoever makes it out of that group could go far though... I *think* it'll be Argentina and the Netherlands, but if Ivory Coast makes it through they could go to the QF's. |

Wow, that last goal by Germany was amazing, as they defeated Costa Rica 4-2.

I was definitely rooting for Costa Rica when they pulled up within one at 3-2.
Too bad Germany was totally dominant everywhere on the field, rarely giving CRC any good looks at the goal and having complete control over the game. Also, Frings. |

Even though I'm not into big sporting events, this is really the only sport I like, so I'm changed my avatar just for this occasion.
I wonder if Germany will win... |

The ref in the Germany/Costa Rica game needed a firm thwapping for blowing the offsides call on Costa Rica's second goal.

That's a hard call for the referees to make, though. Looking at the replay, they slowed it down to show he was PROBABLY just offside, but it's still more of a judgment call. Those calls tend to go 50/50.

Socceroos, obviously, then probably Spain and whichever African team decides to be the bolter. At the moment I'm going for the Paraguayans against England.
Going out on Monday night to watch us play Japan on a cinema-sized screen at the Harbour. Should be great. We drew with Holland in a warm-up and I think we're a chance of getting beyond the group stage, but Japan will be very very tough. (edited by Arwon on 06-10-06 10:03 AM) |

Originally posted by ziffhasnoaim/password But not like Poland's jersey. Still, what the hell happened against Ecuador? And as for Sweden v. Trinidad/Tobago: Avery John got sent off in the 46th and it's STILL scoreless. Sweden's had plenty of chances but they haven't been able to get ANYTHING past Hislop. They've got a corner now (84th minute) and T&T cleared it again. I'm impressed, I've gotta say. |

Paraguay is officially the least threatening team. Ever. They're nice guys. They will push goals on themselves for you so you don't have to put up that much effort!
We aren't going to talk about Poland. They go pwnland. |

How can anyone not want the Ivory Coast to do well?
As it looks now though, they're going to lose to Argentina, 2-1. Edit: And they just did. (edited by NSNick on 06-10-06 04:51 PM) |

Also, does anyone else find it ironic that Budweiser is the official beer of the 2006 World Cup?

Thoughts on all games are ending up on my blog (look at my signature), so go there.
In a nutshell... England need to improve, Sweden REALLY need to improve because there's no excuse for what happened today, and the Ivory Coast aren't dead yet. Ziff: I think Nick means ironic in the sense that they're in GERMANY and Bud's likely not the most popular or best beer there. |
