Well, I've revised it, but I'm still not done
I've still got to do the animation of the waterfall, and add more texture to the brown rocky land. Also, I've decided to use BOTH the green and brown lands for different levels. I've added my prototype foregrounds used with Lakeside Limbo BG Also (Not done either, but close) NEW PICS: (edited by cory21391 on 05-22-06 08:14 AM) |

You should have posted that in your other thread...

I would've, but last time I tryed to make a new reply I couldn't because 'I was the last poster'. And to edit the first one, which I was going to do would mean to have the new pics and the attatched old ones (b/c when you edit a post, you can't edit attatchments) so I just made a new one.

You can reply to a thread where you have the last reply after a day. Or if you don't want to wait, you could simply copy your last reply, delete it, then reply again, paste what you copied, and add what you want to. (edited by Stifu on 05-22-06 08:25 AM) |

Okay....... Now I feel stupid. Anyways, that one can just DIE! Here's the revised BGs plus my new FGs. Any comments/suggestions, or anything I can add or do to make it better. I'm taking my time to make it as good and detailed and smooth as I can.

The overall shapes are fair but the foregrounds could use some texture. Because of this, they seem rather bland.
You're on a roll though. Just roughen some of the foregrounds a bit. Look at the different textures in SMAS or something and you'll be sure to get an idea then. The simplest texture one can accomplish is the sand/dirt. Just put in some pixels of a slightly darker shade in your tiles. Change the shape of the pixels, mix and match and you should have a nice texture. I hope my advice could be of aid to you and good luck! |

These are clearly terrible screenshots. The clash between fancy textured graphics and your graphics is unbearable. Also, water does not trickle straight down a near flat mountain and it looks ridiculous. The screenshots after that are still terrible, but better.
Now, what Cruel Justice said might be a good idea if you wanted to work your way up to fancier textured graphics. However, on your way you would almost undoubtably create many monsterous graphics on your way and show them to us before you grasped exactly what textures and shades are appropriate and which are butt-ugly. There's an alternate route. Your second foreground appeals to me. People have tried to use fewer colors, ugly NES rips, and grayscale to create a special style and failed, but I think your way just might work. The simple rounded style may be used to great effect if you keep those basic shapes and use them throughout the hack. Detail detracts from the effect and will unbalance things; avoid detail at all costs when going with a simpler style. Also, the lack of fancy graphics may help you and the players to focus on things like level design which are far more important than graphics ever were. That doesn't mean you are excused from making stupid mistakes like aligning those support poles on the dock poorly. There are fewer mistakes to make in a hack with simple graphics but they're still there and as glaring as ever. |

Thanks for all the constructive critisism! I will add texture to the brown rocky ness in front of the forest hills and add texture to the waterfall cliff. I'm gonna try and animate the water. Also, I'm going to add sand/dirt or whatever pattern in the brown and green FGs as well as fix the post that hold up the bridge. As far as the land between the waterfall cliff and the water, I'll give it a more 3-D type effect by adding rocks/dirt/sand stuff to it. Also, I'll add some clouds probably and add different grasses/bushes/plants in the FG with the grasses behind Mario. Hopefully I'll finish most revisions tonight, but I'm so close to failing Biology, with a 60+ question Unit 7 review and around 50 or more notecards due tomorrow, a Unit 7 TEST Wedensday, and Exams not far away. I'll try to update it though
____________________________________________________________ Here are some slightly updated screenshots from yesterday. What's still unfinished is addressed in the image. Comments, sugestions, etc.... ____________________________________________________________ Was gonna finish it up tonight, but my dad said I couldn't use the computer. So... it looks like I have to tomorrow. (edited by cory21391 on 05-23-06 08:30 AM) (edited by cory21391 on 05-23-06 05:29 PM) |
