Actually... I specifically said "German" as a helpful hint as to which spelling...
Because von is the only way to do it in german. Van is just a translation to other germanic languages. (Dont argue with me, Im in a german class ) Have you ever heard of "eighty sixing" something? -----Score Sheet----- 82pts - Apophis*** 46pts - Tanookirby** 44pts - SoNotNormal* 32pts - NSNick 25pts - fabio 23pts - Luigi-San 19pts - Synthrax; Kamek77 15pts - Reshaper256 7pts - Zem 6pts - NightKev 5pts - gamed00d 4pts - Kyouji 2pts - Teddylot; Danielle 1pt - SonicandTails --------------------------- RAR DEUTSCHLAND ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Puzzle 87 - Famous People (3 points) MR MR ND LG MR ----------------------------------------------------------------------- |

While Beethoven was born in Germany, his grandfather was from what is now Belgium, and the name 'van Beethoven' is dutch, not German (Ludwig van Beethoven is Dutch for Ludwig of the family of the Beet Garden). Thus, Germans should technically be spelling his name 'van Beethoven'.
There is a hotel in Berlin called "Hotel Ludwig van Beethoven". If you do a google search of only German-language sites, you get 1,360,000 German pages for "van Beethoven", but only 282,000 pages for "von Beethoven". Thus, the German spelling for his name is 'van Beethoven'. Stop complaining Apophis, youre 35 points ahead.
If you want my reasoning, look below. -----Score Sheet----- 82pts - Apophis*** 47pts - SoNotNormal** 46pts - Tanookirby* 32pts - NSNick 25pts - fabio 23pts - Luigi-San 19pts - Synthrax; Kamek77 15pts - Reshaper256 9pts - NightKev 7pts - Zem 5pts - gamed00d 4pts - Kyouji 2pts - Teddylot; Danielle 1pt - SonicandTails --------------------------- Besides, I SPECIFICALLY said German as a subtle hint to indicate I was looking for the GERMAN spelling... not the Dutch spelling. (And yes, I know about the dutch spelling as well, as well as have personal experience. My german teacher has a last name of Van Welzen, and is Dutch). And for the more blunt reason, I didnt say I would accept one or the other. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Puzzle 89 - Famous Place (3 points) DR KS DF TH MN ----------------------------------------------------------------------- And... moving on from that question... |
