Heh... I'm workin' a graphics hack. While a lot of you are using SMAS graphics for their hacks, I'll be faaaaaar more classic...
I'm talking old-school SMB graphics! Sure, it's not very original; but holy crap it's comin' along great!
So far, I've only edited some of Mario/Luigi's graphics and palettes. The rest of the graphics should be pretty easy, though!

So... Tell me what you think! Am I wasting time or should I finish this like others before me haven't?

Personally, I don't really like the NES graphics (though I will endure them if I must), so you probably won't be getting a dl from me. But hey, thats just me, some people may love the NES graphics. Get some more done, post more screenshots, then see what happens.

While it looks pretty good, it definitely doesn't have enough progress on it yet to be able to really say. Typically, it would be a good idea to make a BIT more progress before showing screens.

Ddin't someone already made a SMW hack with NES SMB graphics in it? I heard about this a while back.

Anyway, I like to see how this one turns out.

Yes... I'm pretty sure there were a few, but the last one I remember playing only had a few levels changed and only a few sprites and objects changed. And yes, there's practically been no progress whatsoever lol... It shouldn't take TOO long... Then again I'm not necessarily the most reliable when it comes to working on anything for more than a week. Heh, don't worry, though...

However, I might need a little help if I want to get his ASM code at least close to the original Mario's... Hahhah that's if anybody's bored enough.

And as for not liking NES graphics... Heheh who wants to look at 8-bit graphics when they can see higher detailed, sexier 16-bit ones? This is just a tribute to the classic game lol... That's all.

Well... I'm gonna go work on some more now.

It'd be neat if you kept the shape and style of the SMB1 GFX, but with some 16-bit improvements... kind of an "in-between".

It looks alright, but Mario looks so out of place... I suppose I'll have to wait until you've done more graphics (unless this is only a Mario/Luigi hack?)

So far, I've only edited some of Mario/Luigi's graphics and palettes.

Meaning I will eventually get to the rest of the graphics after I'm done with Mario and Luigi. Believe me, they won't look out of place when I'm finished lol.

And thanks for the suggestion, Imajin, but I want to keep it strictly 8-bit.

Heh... Maybe if Mario only looked like that in one or a few oldschool levels, that'd be nice... But all the time, not really... Not the bestest hack idea, I think. What matters is whether you're having fun doing it though.

I've always had a soft spot in my heart for the old 8-bit graphics. I will certainly give it a whirl.

Yes, completely NES graphics, and an NES style yoshi and enemies, it would be like the original Super Mario only with the Super Mario World engine.

I've seen other attempts like this in the past, but the hackers got lazy and never finished.

Stifu - No it isn't the "bestest" hack idea, but yes... I'm havin' tons of fun with this.

Pas'ra'chilli - You just can't beat the classics!

Chickenlump - Don't worry... I won't get TOO lazy.

Shane - I don't think you were the only one who's thought of this in the past; I could have sworn I've seen at least a couple others.

Raccoon Sam - Yeah, all graphics... But I might want to change the ASM a bit... Possibly the music too when that one SPC program is finished.

GeckoYamori - I'm sure a SMB3 hack would be possible too; just look at all the hacks that use SMAS: SMB3's Mario... The SMAS version was just a little bit different from its NES counterpart; it could be done!!! But, I'm stickin to SMB1.

Oh, and not much is finished, but I've created an ips patch of the current rom; just so you can get a basic idea. (Seriously; not a lot was changed; just a few sprites, some objects, and most of Mario/Luigi's sprites... There are a few bugs with small Mario/Luigi, but their Super forms look pretty much old school!)

Erm.... Anyway; here you go!

I tried doing this before! I GOT to know if all the animations are intact!

Welly welly well... It's not what I tried to do, but it's okay.

You might want to make up some "new" poses from Mario so as it looks more crispy and funky fresh. The looking up while holding a shell sprite also needs to be changed.

EDIT: AWWwwwWWwww!!!! Now I want to build upon it!

Heh heh... Yeah I toldja... There are still a few bugs with Mario/Luigi. Plus there were some I didn't fix. (I forgot about looking up w/ shell! My bad...)
And I'll make new poses eventually. (Mario kicking, Mario's victory pose, climbing, spin-jumping, ugh...)

Yeah, not much was finished... But still a good idea so far?

Thanks, hacker formerly known as Pete!

*Edit: Wait... I just use the SMWPTE for all my Mario/Luigi sprite editing.

**Edit: 0_o Guys.... One small problem...

Actually... A very big one...

It goes from barely a MB to 8MB?
I only changed the graphics, some palettes, the Mario/Luigi tiles (via SMWPTE), and some of the blocks (to make the ground tiles look more SMB-like)...
I didn't change too many of each, and it was just working before I modified a few more graphics and palettes. (tiles 1C3, 1C4, 1D3, and 1D4 and palette 6F)

I know this sounds like something a newbie would ask, but I'm gonna ask anyway...

How can I make this LOTS smaller?
