Just a small question, why is it called SMW Darkness if most of the levels are bright? Especailly the cave level, the yellow background is too bright.

Boring overworld, good level design, bad pallettes.
And be VERY sure to remove that link to a ROM site now, you cannot direct link to any site that has a rom on it, otherwise I agree with fabio, the name makes no sense. It may take a while to perfect, but it looks good. |

Screen 1: Weird story . The gfx are nothing groundbreaking, but I guess they look alright.
Screen 2: Nothing impressive here as it uses the same skeleton as the original Yoshi's Island. Screen 3: Very plain OW, just one straight strip of land. Plus, the little bit of land at the top of the screen to the right does not have a proper edge and water shadow. Screen 4: Horrible BG colors, do you not realize they look so bad? Don't jam in so many random colors into the BG hills, try and use different shades of similar colors. Also, Mario's palettes look a bit off. There's a bit of pink on the edge of his hat and on his sleeve that doesn't fit in. Screen 5: Nothing really exciting here, BG is a bit too bright. Screen 6: The BG here can look alright if you stick to the different shades of orange and eliminate the green and black which completely clash. Other than that it doesn't look exciting at all, I've seen the "Invincible-Mario-Over-Munchers" done in a handful of hacks before this one. Screen 7: Pretty much the same as 5. Screen 8: Again, why so many clashing colors? Try to avoid this. Screen 9: Finally, a decent BG. But again, it's a SMAS BG, so nothing ground-breaking. Looks pretty boring too with one enemy. Screen 10: Whoa, small Mario looks terrible here. What's up with the pink outline around him. Also, the BG contrast is a bit too much, try using a slightly smaller gradient. Screen 11: Decent yet overused BG, and looks completely boring with one flat bridge and one small fish. Screen 12: Well, no complaints here, not that this one looks that great, I've just stated all these things already. Basically, your biggest problem appears to be palettes. Make sure you straighten those out to give your hack a better appearance. Also, a lot of your screens look very lacking, whether it be enemies or variety of objects. This hack appears to need some improvement. (edited by Trinity on 12-01-05 09:03 PM) |

MY EYYYYYYYYYYYYEEEEEES!
Dude, chill with the bright palettes. If it is called SMW Darkness, make it darker. Heck, Mario is even brighter than normal. I would highly suggest toning it down some. Other than that, the only complaint is that there are many block sections. You have a bunch of long tiles and no variation in between. The second to the last screen is an example. Just a long bridge and nothing else... Add more into it to make it more... exciting. That Cheep-cheep won't help by itself... |

Dude. Change it it so it looks better! You've had it since before the boards were down, and you haven't changed anything! If you're going to repost it OVER AND OVER AGIAN, change something!

Good god, I think it's way too bright. Lower down the brightness and this hack will look a lot better. Oh, and if you were trying to make a resemblance of world 7-7 in SMB3 on the 6th screenie then the background needs to be changed.

1. The screens are pretty much the same as the ones at the old board...
2. The hack looks no where near interesting. 3. The brightness is tearing my eyes out... 4. Where's the darkness...? 5. Need I say more? In seriousness; you have to improve on your work. You've showed this sometime before and nothing has really changed on it yet. (edited by Chris on 12-01-05 11:20 PM) |

Offtopic (or is it?): Hey, Kins, you still doing those bad romhack reviews?
Those pallettes aren't just a little too bright. It's 2 AM, and I think they're waking my parents up two rooms over. And your overworld? Boring me to sleep. (but I could use the sleep anyway) Plus which, your levels look flat and generic. (edited by Tamarin Calanis on 12-02-05 02:14 AM) |

Originally posted by Tamarin CalanisYeah, I just got knocked off the GGB wagon for a bit due to exams. But now I have some free time, and am merrily looking for a hack that will make my face muscles slacken in shock. In other words, Wario World Subcon. Anywho, to avoid a derail, I'll comment on all your shots. 1.) The pallete makes SMA1 look like Doom 3 - way too bright! Interesting story idea, but the text box looks kinda messy. 2.) Pretty basic Yoshi's Island edit. 3.) Can we spell "linear" boys and girls? (If you can, you're better than 25% of your fellow posters!) 4.) Floor doesn't quite suit the level, which looks plain and without background detail. The pallete again too bright, and the background's pallete, for lack of a more polite way to say it, is wrong. 5.) Not a fan of the background pallete. Nothing paticularly horrible in this pic, but nothing interesting either. 6.) This reminds me of a certain level in World 6 (maybe 7?) of Mario 3. 7.) Oh joy, the jumping puzzle of the DAMNED! The blocks kinda blend into the background, making this level look even less fun. 8.) Background pallete hurts my eyes. Empty space above ceiling just looks odd. 9.) Nothing paticularly interesting. 10.) Oh dear. OH DEAR. 11.) Looks like a dull level, you should add coins, gaps, enemies etc, to give the player something to do. 12.) Perhaps overusing the one tile. A decent start, but it could certainly use some work. Also, lol rom link. |

Guys, the screenshots are too bright because of a bug in whatever emulator he's using. That's what he said last time, anyway.
Even if the colors WERE correct, though, the screenshots would still look like your usual SMB3-flavored vomit. Bland level design, few enemies, little challenge, you know the drill. Also, that link in your signature needs to go. Had you actually read the FAQ that pops up when you register, you'd already know that ROM site links are a big no-no. |

The colors kick ass, the levels don't.
Also, what does over-population have to do with "darkness"? The name is pretty blah, to put it in professional terms. I think there are a couple of glitches with your backgrounds as well... |

I find that hacks with "dark" in the name aren't very good.
Anyway, played the demo, and it's not that good. Levels are spartan in detail, and the first few are just poor edits of SMW levels. This plus the peter_ac gfx usage just makes the hack feel... well... generic. |

The hack calls "Darkness", but its bloody bright. :/
And the Levels are really boring. No fantasy, nothing new. Only a normal way and one time comes a Goomba, then a Koopa, then again 2 Goombas. More creativity! |

I'm sorry, I couldn't find anything halfway decent in your hack. There are numerous errors in spelling and grammar in the intro sequence, you have wrong palettes on some of the BG's, and it just looks boring.
Keep trying and you can get it to be a halfway decent hack, though! |
